A school bus driver who was convicted of assault for groping teens and women says an excessive intake of caffeine drove him to the acts.
Kenneth Sands, 51, from Seattle, tried to use what is being called the caffeine defense at his sentencing on Tuesday.
Sands had been convicted in Lewis County Superior Court of molesting three high school volleyball players and two women during and after a volleyball game in Onalaska on October 18, 2011.
Sands says it was caffeine that had driven him to act out of character and that drinking too much caused a psychotic episode.

The first groping incident occurred while Sands was a spectator at the game.

After this game, he then allegedly grabbed two teenage girls outside of a school bus, followed them on to the bus and then touched another female students before he was kicked off the bus.
He told the court yesterday that too much coffee caused him to act that way.
'That caused a psychotic episode. My son-in-law and daughter had never seen that kind of behavior from myself.'
The mother of one of Sands' victims read a letter in court about the impact the incident had on her daughter.

This is not the first time a defendant has used s defense such as this to try to explain their actions in court.
Dr Martin Blinder, a psychiatrist known for presenting the 'Twinkie defense' in the 1979 trial of San Francisco Supervisor Dan White who shot and killed San Francisco City Supervisor Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone, told ABC News that he has never heard of caffeine-induced groping.
'When someone gets depressed and abandons his diet, eats junk food, and if you are already on a downward spiral, I can tell you that eating junk food is not therapeutic.
'If you ever read the label on a Twinkie, only two of the ingredients sound like food products.'
The Twinkie defense was used to help White avoid a first-degree murder conviction and instead be convicted of manslaughter due to diminished capacity.
Mr Blinder said that because caffeine is made from coffee beans, it is free from artificial ingredients.
'We have no evidence that coffee is harmful. In fact, there is some evidence that drinking it in one’s old age can assist in some Alzheimer’s cases,' he told ABC.

Puuhleez. He grabbed your tits and then held you for a second, than grabbed your butt? And you are traumatized? Maybe you should go serve in Afghanistan so your horrible, terrible, traumatic experience could be put into some perspective
