Trail Running
    #16460227 - 06/30/12 01:32 PM (10 months, 14 days ago)

Anyone frequently participate in this? I love getting out on the trails and out in nature as much as possible. Way better than running on the pavement bashing your shins and knees to pieces.

I do a lot of races in the Southeast and I am doing my first ultramarathon this fall.

I trail run quite often. Lots of hiking trails in the mountains here. Recently ran sections of the AT and other peaks in the area. A good day for me is over 20 miles and usually hit 4 to 6 summits. I have never run a long race, just some shorter Mud Runs. Mostly go out solo and bag peaks.

It is much more fun to run through the woods rather than on pavement! Rock hopping, puddle jumping, and charging through streams. Climbing up into the alpine zone is a great workout, and once I get up to the ridge line I can run from peak to peak, or viewpoint to viewpoint. I only stop to admire the view, maybe burn a little, do some bouldering, or to investigate an interesting mushroom. I also take mental notes on the various habitats and ecosystems I encounter. It has helped my hunting skills develop! My time alone in the woods also helps me clear my head and release stress.

Good luck with your ultra marathon, sounds like a great experience!

Thanks! You nailed it as far as what makes trail running so perfect. Really lets your thoughts flow freely and get away from the hustle and bustle of modern living. Plus, running down sidewalks just makes me nervous as I've been hit by a car before. Thankfully it wasn't bad but still gives me a little PTS and I feel overly cautious.

The ultramarathon should be a blast. I know it's going to be immensely difficult though but I'm always up for a new challenge. If it goes really well I am actually going to start focusing my attention to only doing ultramarathons and longer trail runs.

Sure the shorter ones are fun and I have no problem blazing through the forest on 5k-10ks but the experience is what completes the longer races.
