So The finding of the Higgs Boson basically confirms the model of the atom that we have now?

I've been following this thread, but Canada Day got the best of me so information isn't processing as fast as usual

problem is, it does. from the article:

Quote:

In recent times, our expanding technology has confirmed that Galileo and Bruno were right, and Aristotle and the church were flat out wrong.

Quote:

Also, for the universe to be 14-15 billion years old as you claim, the Earth would have to be at the very center of said universe. Seeing as how that particular age is calculated by measuring the limits of what we can see.

That's a pretty big fundamental flaw right off the bat.

an integral component of how we discovered galaxies - our own and others outside of our own - is discovering that some are older than we are, thus putting us nowhere near the center of the universe. i wanna say hubble did this, but he was building on someone else's work from the 19th century. i could be mistaken on that but i don't think there are any credible astrophysicists who think the earth is at the center of the universe.

Quote:

Also, how can you ignore the ocean of data that proves the big bang theory is not possible?

because it's a bunch of bullshit? the only thing i have seen you illustrate is your lack of understanding of what's being discussed. so any time you're ready to unleash this deluge of proofs that overturn quantum mechanics be our guest.

Quote:

Oh, I know, by assuming the theory is correct since that's what they taught you in school and on discovery channel.

i make no assumptions, nor do i tout myself to be any sort of scientist, but the fact remains that quantum mechanics is the most tested and verified theory in the history of science. could it be wrong? absolutely. but the probability of that being the case is very, very low.

Yes, but not just the model of the atom.  The model is of subatomic particles.  Its known as the 'Standard Model'.  A great many particles were predicted by it and found.  It is part of the most numerically successful theories in all of science, Quantum Field Theory.

DC, does this get us closer to understanding gravity at all?

No, I dont think so.  Last night I told my wife its like reconciling your receipts with your account.  You fully expect to find reconciliation but you go through the motions anyway to be thorough.  Of course I would never be so flippant in my department.  Certainly its a good and worthy thing to do.

Its observations that go beyond the standard model that may lead us to a theory of quantum gravity.  One such observation is 'supersymmetry', a complicated idea.  For many hypothetical theories of quantum gravity supersymmetry is a necessary requirement.  But experiementally it cant really be a smoking gun because; If the LHC doesnt find it, it may still exist at higher energies & if the LHC does find it that doesnt mean the hypothetical theory is necessarily valid.

There are other observations that are hoped to made that are along similar lines, where observing the phenomenon is consistent with the hypothesis but not exclusive to the hypothesis and not observing the phenomenon only means it still may or may not exist, just at higher energies.

Yeah, I like the analogy. If we hadn't found this thing it would have been a problem.
So this confirms that what we thought we didn't understand about gravity actually is what we didn't understand about it.
Which is good in an anticlimactic way, I suppose.

Maybe we'll get a Golden Age of Gravity, like happened with radio, or computers.
Imagine making your own gravity sled from ordinary hardware store parts and a few special components.

So basically what your saying is that discovery won't be as significant as people thought it would be?

Also, while we are in the subject, you seem to know about these things more than other people here,

What your thought about that particle that surpassed the speed of light not too long ago?

Solar power is a sideroad at best. Fusion is where it's at.
Every penny we spend on solar just takes us away from the answer we know is right.

It was found to be a loose fiber optic connection IIRC.  The experiment was repeated and the neutrinos were found to be at less than the speed of light.  The professor in charge of the experiment resigned.

You're right.  My point is even if we do come up with some anti-gravity thangs, its still far from practical.

whats wrong with solar power other than the initial fee of buying emm?
if i had the money for em id get em
i plan to in the next few years too

Solar has huge opportunity cost.  That is, for every dollar and hour you spend researching solar you could be researching fusion.  I think that is what their objection is about.
