Need GPS advice

I'm looking for something that would be useful for walking in the forest with. Its looking like the Garmin Oregon model or something like it will be it. I want to be able to walk around and mark way-points on a topographical map, I'm still debating on whether or not to get one of the models with a camera, not sure if the extra battery usage will be a big deal if I plan on only using after walking 3-5 miles or so and marking a point and taking a picture then turning it off.

Well if you are keeping it off during your walking time and only turning it on for camera shot and mark you should be set for at least a few stops. The long turn on/configure time will be a pain in the bum though. Id say it would probably make it through your trip .. Actually if you are only walking those 3-5 miles you could most probably keep it on the entire time if you'd like assuming of course it will just be a trip up and back.
Btw I have one tomtom gps for the cheaps in the marketplace since last month... Don't know if I will do the topographical features you'd want but I can definitely check that.

iphone with the right gps app might be your best bet, but if u are gonna be gone for days then u will only be able to turn it on when u check it.

I've been geocaching for almost 7 years. I use a couple different Magellan handhelds. The eXplorist 100 and 600 models to be specific. Both are really outdated compared to the stuff thats out now, but they still serve me well. I actually use my 100 more then the 600 even though its a more basic model with fewer features. For my geocaching its just simple and uncomplicated. I've learned how to pick out physical places around me pretty well based on my actual location (provided by my GPS) and my intended destination (the coordinates I am trying to reach).
Either way I have plenty of battery life on either model to take in a full day of activities and never turn it off. The 100 uses 2 AA batteries and will run easily 15-20 hours on them. The 600 is a rechargeable and still gets a good 12hrs no problem. But both those models are long since discontinued, and anything newer will have many handy features that I lack. In short, this long-winded post will be of no help to you in deciding what to get today!
