Astronaut, rock star, artist, secret agent, pirate, fireman, professional athlete, and teenage mutant ninja turtle were common career goals from my generation. I wanted to be a mad scientist with a lair.
As most of us get older our interests shift a bit, and more practical career choices come into focus. Mine shifted slightly as I settled for something in the chemistry/biochemistry field. I could definitely be happy with working in labs the rest of my life, but I think I want something more. I'm still an undergraduate and uncertainty isn't unheard of at this stage, but I find myself daydreaming about doing something quite different with my life. And quite illegal, too.
I should mention I'm a misanthrope. Also, while I don't really meet much of the criteria for being a psychopath/sociopath, I do sometimes want to manipulate people's lives in some way. While that doesn't justify my weird fantasy and certainly wouldn't justify my actions should the fantasy ever become reality (doubtful), I thought I'd throw that out there.
I have this fantasy of going to med school just so I can lead a double life as a chemist by day and a rogue surgeon who sterilizes people by night. When I say people I mean people that should not have kids but most likely will. People who are not fit to be parents, and by that I'm not referring to most people's standards. I'm referring to mine, and my standards are pretty high. Kind of vague, I know, but think of the best parents you know and pretend that is the cut-off.
I know that a guy sneaking around and abducting people with a syringe full of etorphine (M99 for Dexter fans. Yeah, it's obvious I've been watching this show a lot lately but the initial fantasy existed before I saw it) and then surgically sterilizing them in a clandestine operating room one person at a time isn't going to change the world. That's why I want to take it further. I want to found a secret society of covert surgeons that eventually gets large enough to reduce the number of stupid people breeding. Not so large and effective that the birth rate absolutely plummets, but effective enough to start a slow taper. Slow enough for society and the economy to adjust to the decrease in population. I would want this secret band of surgeons to last long after I'm gone.
Obviously there are ways I could try to change the world that don't involve me stealthily deploying a surgical brotherhood across the country/world with the mission of initiating an involuntary eugenics campaign. I'm drawn to this fucked up, extremely impractical fantasy though.
If somehow it was possible to carry out such a plan, do you think it would have a positive impact on society in the future? I'm not making the claim that everyone who grows up with great (and intelligent) parents turns out peachy, but could it hurt?
Does anyone else have fantasies of "bettering" humanity through their own demented modus?

The earth is a beautiful, rich, and splendid planet. It has all things that man desires, but not one of these things is limitless, not the air, not the water, not even the fertility of the land. Let's postulate another planet very similar to earth-but nearly depleted....let's say it's almost completely used up. There are men on this planet as there are men here, but their society is somewhat more technologically advanced. Like many men, they are selfish and self-seeking, and they want the Earth and they want the earth without its human population (much like yourself). They need the earth for their own purposes. Based on your lack of response to my first post in this thread, I see you've doubted me. But this notion is certainly ingenious (albeit in a fucked up way), and I recognize that. I see you recognize yourself as mad and from that you've likely concluded that madmen are ingenious. I surmise that because I sense that you have some minorly grandiose delusions of your own intelligence.
It's clear by this point that you've also identified me as a fellow madman, so I'll leave you to ponder over the precise quality of my madness......
But I have an idea for you.....you could attack the earth in the way you've suggested, but that would mean grave losses and even the possibility of defeat for you-no matter how small that possibility is in your eyes. I advise you to take another plan of action. Train these carefully chosen covert surgeons and induce a conditioned amnesia, of sorts. That way, these men of yours would know what they had to do, what they were trained to do, yet be without the knowledge of why they do what they must do. Thus protecting your identity from ever being revealed by one of your men.
You labeled this as an "extremely impractical fantasy," but let me pose you a question.
Has it never occurred to you that in the history and practice of what we call mankind, there is a certain lack of logic and practicality?
How do you know what you've proposed isn't already being done?

My fantasy isn't an earth without its human population, it's about culling the undesirable breeders through nonlethal means to increase the chance of a better tomorrow for humanity. It's not even about eugenics really, more so it's about reducing the chances for parental nurture to fuck people up.
Quote:
Based on your lack of response to my first post in this thread, I see you've doubted me.
I didn't respond to your first post, this is true. You tried to relate to me by bringing up your own fantasy: killing serial killers like Dexter. I asked for fantasies, so this was good. However, when you said that hypothetically you'd put me on your list when I'm neither a killer nor plan to be, it seemed to me that you might be fooling yourself. If you're willing to compromise your code for killing people to put me on your list before you've killed anyone yourself, it makes me think that you may just want to murder and need some justification to be at peace with yourself. Which is fine, and Dexter essentially murders for himself, but I asked for fucked up fantasies of "bettering" humanity, not just fucked up fantasies.
I suppose you could argue everyone acts out of self interest whether it be doing drugs or charity work, and I wouldn't try to argue against that. I don't think your fantasy has anything to do with helping others though. Maybe you can show me why I'm wrong.

I think its a case by case thing. I'm not sure I'd say a madman and a man with mad ideas are the same thing though. I'm on the fence on whether or not "mad" is a proper adjective with which to describe myself.
Quote:
I surmise that because I sense that you have some minorly grandiose delusions of your own intelligence.
I have self-esteem issues but I can be full of myself now and then. Objectively, I am fairly intelligent in relation to the US population.
Quote:
But I have an idea for you.....you could attack the earth in the way you've suggested, but that would mean grave losses and even the possibility of defeat for you-no matter how small that possibility is in your eyes.
I'm aware that the possibility of defeat or failure is quite large, and I'm ok with that. I consider myself a conservative risk taker with an inner adrenaline junkie. However, this isn't some undertaking where I would have a 6 month planning stage and then have at the population. This plan would need to be at least a decade in the making before it gets set into motion. Even then, it's not some explosive operation in which I expect to see major results in my lifetime. The plan will be synonymous with an ultimate long con that will outlast me.
I could easily learn how to properly do the surgeries, become skilled and fit enough to abduct people smoothly, and become proficient enough at other needed skills to actually make the fantasy a reality by the end of this year. There is no rush though, because if I were to actually do this I'd want it to work. Initiating the plan prematurely would be unwise.

I'm not going to take the MK-ULTRA route. I will not brainwash anyone. Sure I'd be violating people's privacy and rights by surgically sterilizing them without their consent, but violating someone's mind is not something I ever intend to do. I do draw the line somewhere. The risks would be greater this way, but I could live with that. I couldn't live with brainwashing people.
That being said, the recruitment process for my shadow organization would be extremely slow and meticulous. It would begin at friendship so some level of trust would exist. Slowly I would divulge ideas and learn about theirs, and I would either continue or discontinue my attempt to recruit them depending on their responses and reactions. I see many reasons for why this would be a risky practice, but I intend for membership in the organization to be completely voluntary.

Yes it has occurred to me that mankind has always existed with a certain lack of logic and practicality. Many people in the past could see this as the mankind's actions played out, and it becomes even clearer in hindsight. Humanity has always had problems, and it's likely it always will. I just think if my fantasy were to work, it may help reduce problems in the future. Perhaps logic and practicality could play larger roles in mankind's existence.
I don't know for certain if what I've proposed isn't already being done. I have looked for reports of victims being sterilized against their will, but there doesn't appear there's a secret society enacting a similar plan yet. Of course, maybe that's how it's supposed to appear and I have competitors out there. Obviously I'm not the first person to have the idea of culling "problem people," and I'd wager I'm not the first person to propose doing it in a nonlethal manner. It's quite possible I'm not the only person with such a plan, but I simply do not know.

You know when you start saying "I want to sterilise people" they see this as a personal attack, because if you take away the persons abillity to reproduce then you've crippled them. It's like saying "These fat lazy cunts sit on their arse all day. I should be allowed to break their legs and hamstring them."
Just as long as you know this is the sort of action that results in angry villagers with flaming torches baying for blood.
You know, this whole depopulation thing makes me shake my head. It's always done the wrong way. Industrialising nations is the way of getting people to make less children. Turns out when you're not in threat of facing poverty when older, you wont' have loads of kids in the hope one of them will be able to support you, it relaxes people, and that's why in the "western world" birth rates are between 1.2-1.5, which imo presents it's own problems. Oh yes, you can import some phillipino nurse to look after old codgers when it's time, but what happens when they industrialise? Mark my words, in fourty years time (the UN does population growth charts) when when population peaks at nine billion then starts shrinking, we are going to be facing the problem of depopulation. Many will see this as a good thing. The way I see it, is the more people we have, the more opportunity we have to grow as a species. The internet is crucial to this, as it's our 21st century library of alexandria (with a whole lot of celebrity gossip and sports and other crap, but doesn't take too much to filter out). What is also crucial is for people to stop accepting authority of those above them. When no one respects any authority apart from god (no, not intermediaries of "god", that's still submitting your will to another human being) then there won't be soliders following orders to invade, there won't be TSA groping innocent people because "hurr durr just following orders." There won't be doctors only practising allopathic medicine at the cost of patients lives, because that is what the pharma companies.
Actually the last point really does fuck me off big time. Since when was being a doctor ever about making big bucks? Being a doctor is a calling in life, a big calling, one where you serve the community, where you adhere to the hippocractic oath, where you volunteer part of your time to treat the needy for free, out of a duty as a doctor. It's not supposed to be some cushty job where the drug companies get you to push their product.
Anyway, back to your point. Don't fuck with people and they won't fuck with you.

That's not the best analogy, but I understand what you're saying. Off the top of my head here's an analogy that still isn't perfect, but is a little more fitting: "That guy is making shitty, low quality beer that contains methanol and is passing it out to people. I should take action that prevents him from continuing to distribute dangerous beverages. If he wants to distribute alcohol in the future, he can show that he is capable and responsible enough by getting licensed to do so and distributing beer that is safely made by someone else."
Remember, adoption is still an option, but you have to prove (to an extent) to social workers that as a foster parent you are actually capable of raising a child without fucking it's life up, and in turn perpetuating problems in society. That's how the beer analogy kind of works. Not perfect, I know. If the guy only wanted to distribute his own personally made beer, the analogy fails. He could also learn to make safe beer himself, so that is another fault. But I don't think my plan has the same faults as the analogy. You would see why if you asked good foster parents who've raised a child to adulthood if they would rather have had their own child. I bet most would tell you that they wouldn't have had it any other way.

Anyway, back to your point. Don't fuck with people and they won't fuck with you.
First of all, the fantasy has nothing to do with population reduction. It's about culling people that have no business raising children in a nonlethal fashion. Also, I realize there would be problems with the reduced population that would inevitably result from my organization's actions, and that is why the plan would be done slowly over a long period of time to allow for societal and economic adjustment.
I'm an atheist, and see submitting to the will of any god as a problem with humanity. Let's not make this an atheist vs. believer thread though. There are already plenty of those and it's unlikely such a discussion/debate will lead to anything constructive. It's off topic, so I'll agree to disagree.
I agree doctors make a lot of money and sometimes have cushy jobs and toss pharms around like candy. Other times they don't. I personally know a few doctors who loathe the pharmaceutical industry. Many doctors pretty much live in poverty while going to school and interning, submitting themselves to extreme stress that many people wouldn't do even if they could. People's lives are in their hands, and decisions are regularly made that put those lives at risk. It's not an easy job for someone with a conscience, even the older guys. If they didn't make a lot of money, many of the doctors you are glad to have wouldn't do it. Humans are greedy, that's just the way it is.
I'm also well aware that it's unlikely my society and I would be favored by the general public. That's where the covert part comes in, to protect the organization and the mission.

While I'm sure the gene pool needs a healthy dose of bleach. I don't think any of us can be trusted to decide that sort of systematic population control. Remove the safety stickers from everything, and the population will weed it's self out thru natural selection. Remove the news media that blindly guides and distracts most of our population. Now you might have a new world order worth living in. It won't last long though, humans are lazy and will prefer anything that tells them what to think over thinking for themselves.

I think the removal of safety stickers would work much faster than my plan and therefore would result in the economy having more severe problems than we've seen so far in the US. Society may not be able to withstand a huge drop in population. Also, removing safety stickers puts kids who are just ignorant in danger. Clearly I'm all for great parenting, but the reality is a parent can't watch over his or her kid 100% of the time, and a kid can't be expected to know about every possible danger.
I also think the media problem would eventually begin to get better if my plan went into action. It would be a long process, but I think slow change is the key here that will keep things running relatively smoothly.
Laziness seems difficult to eliminate, so until someone figures out how I think we'll just have to

Does anyone else have fantasies of "bettering" humanity through their own demented modus?
teenage mutant ninja turtle. And here I thought me and everyone around me when I was young, were the only people that thought it would be possible to spill mutagen on ourselves and become teenage mutant ninja turtles when we grew up
and yet, all this time, it seems just about anybody thought they could achieve that. Shows what I knew

That's how it worked in the past most of the time, but the stupids have many more protections to ensure they survive long enough to breed now. And they do breed. At a high rate and young age. Adults actually fit to raise kids usually have fewer children in comparison; many of the adults that would make great parents just don't have kids.
