Anchorage man gets 13 years in drug case
32-year-old sold fake heroin that may have led to death of user.

An Anchorage man who dealt fake heroin, a substance suspected of killing one of his customers, was sentenced to more than 13 years in federal prison on Wednesday.
Brackston Moores, 32, and his partners bought what they thought was heroin from a Florida man and sold about a kilogram of it in Anchorage from December 2008 to April 2009. The substance was actually a mixture that included the powerful opiates Fentanyl and morphine, an anti-allergy medication, caffeine and a plant called Kratom, federal prosecutors said.
It's unclear from court documents exactly how or when Moores and his associates caught the attention of federal investigators, but the investigators were apparently tracking the drug shipments from Florida to Alaska.
In February 2009, a customer of Moores' known as "M.C." in court documents died of an overdose, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. M.C.'s blood had traces of the chemicals Moores was selling, and investigators found some of the fake heroin with the same chemicals in the same quantities in his room, the prosecutors said.
Moores was arrested in Hawaii in April 2011 and pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute drugs that December.
On Wednesday, Judge Ralph Beistline sentenced Moores to 160 months in prison.

I'd really like to know how someone mistook a concoction of powders and plant material as heroin.
