So my jar seemed to do this overnight:
A day or two later and I've got this:
This is my first grow... so maybe this stuff grows a lot slower than I realize or is something else going on? Should I be seeing more growth?
I've got them on a shelf at room temperature. Jars came from everything mushrooms. I know. I know. I should make my own jars. Buying jars is a rip off. etc etc. I don't care to purchase jars. I have peace of mind knowing they're more likely to be sterilized better than what I'm capable of. I'm sure I'll try my hand at making my own sometime- but not for my first grow and probably not for my next grow.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

It could be. It looks enough like mycelium that I wouldn't toss it now. If it's mold it will eventually change colors and you'll know for sure then.

thanks for not bashing me about making my own jars 
reading that shit gets old. seems like it's in every other newb post!

How long since you inoculated?
Is that growth in just one spot? or everywhere you inoculated?
Looks pretty normal if that's 5-10 days after inoculating with spores.
Definitely don't toss them. give thema few days they'll probably start looking more 'normal'
A few mm growth a day is about normal for me in most cases.

Beefy, that's just what I need to hear bro!
There are 3 spots on that particular jar. None of them seem to be progressing.
I think I inoculated about 10 days ago (the newb in me didn't date the jars...). I had no growth up until just a few days ago... but I had taped the holes after inoculating. Then I read that because of the dry verm layer, I didn't need the tape. Removed the tape and BAM. I had that... but I haven't really noted any progress... I thought the stuff was supposed to take off like a rocket... I guess that's the newb in me.
I can take pictures of the other 2 spots if you think that's necessary. There's one bigger patch and one TINY patch... but it all looks the same color as this. This patch happens to be the most noticeable (there is a larger patch, but I have to remove the tape/label to check it).
Anyway, if it's normal for growth to be slow like that, I can rest at ease. I was thinking it should be doubling after it gets started...

Oh yeah... I inoculated in 4 locations on that particular jar... three of the 4 sites show growth. One site shows an incredibly small, but noticeable growth. The fourth site shows absolutely zero.
I'd say I inoculated 10 days ago TOPS. definitely no longer than that.

Tracked down the -ahem- tracking number. I inoculated this jar exactly 8 days ago. Today being the 8th day.

If they were doubling in size I'd be worried  By the time they're nearly colonized though they'll be growing pretty fast, fast enough at least that you can tell a difference over several hours.

You're good then.
It can take up to 14 days just to germinate sometimes, a few days to get large enough to see, a few more days before they seem to really take off.
I wouldn't be surprised if tomorrow you've got a fourth spot showing up.
If you can fight the urge- only check on them every three days or so. one day of growth doesn't look like much but three or four days you'l see a noticable difference.
