Types of Compost?
    #16417083 - 06/21/12 11:04 PM (11 months, 21 days ago)

a while back someone posted something here about the different stages of composting.  something about what happens at each stage,  the different types of organisms that are breaking stuff down - what is being consumed at a particular point,  how to tell when it's ready to use,  stuff like that.

I can't seem to find it anymore.  Maybe it was an excerpt from one of the common cultivation books.

Anybody know what I'm talking about?

I know I am not providing the in-depth details like you are looking for but typically with hot composting, mesophyllic (medium temperature) bacteria set in.  Their metabolic activities cause the pile to heat up, eventually making it inhospitable for themselves.  Then thermophyllic (hot) bacteria who enjoy this much warmer temperature begin to take over.  They raise the temperature further up to around 150 I believe.  This high temperature acts the same as pasteurization and kills most seeds and pathogens.  These hot bacteria are said to be the fastest at the actual composting process, but they quickly run out of steam unless you keep adding new stuff to the pile.  As the pile cools back down, mesophyllic bacteria set back in to finish the job.  Other organisms such as mites, worms, and beetles also move in at this time to do their part of the job.

A decent book on the subject is "let it rot", "teaming with microbes" is another good one, both should be fairly easy to locate on pdf.

I wanted to add that Stamet's earlier book "The Mushroom Cultivator"
has a very detailed section on composting.

Thank you both.

I thought I was growing a woodlover but it doesn't grow on fresh stuff very well.

I've been playing around with woodchip mulch at various levels of decompositon,

it seems to like the heavily broken down, almost dirt like stuff.  I'm thinking I need to add some other compost to the mix.

I've got a small pile I use for the vegetable garden,  mostly leaves and grass,  some rotten fruit and veggies.  I'm trying to figure out just how decomposed it all needs to be before pasteurizing so it doesn't become a contaminated mess -  or have all of the nutrition eaten away already.

Got some good reading to do.

Thanks again
