 Help with a custom paint job?

So, I've been into modding my old school systems. I have a lot of NES consoles that are pretty fugly and beat up, so I like to cut windows in them, fill them with LED's, etc. I have the cutting and lighting down, but I can't seem to get a really sick paint job down.
This guy is doing exactly what I'd like to do:
Skip around in the video, they're pretty much all the style I want.
Now, I'm frustrated because this guy won't indulge how he does his systems. All he will say is "automotive paint". I don't know shit about automotive paint. I'm not willing to go out and just buy a buttload of expensive car paint to end up having it not work.
Does anyone know how I could reproduce something similar to this? I have a lot of pretty cool window mods that deserve an awesome paint job, and I don't want to ship them half way across the world for this guy to do. Its killing me, these unfinished projects.
