Any other actives grow near liberty caps?
    #16395921 - 06/17/12 04:48 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

I often see some very exotic looking mushrooms while I'm on the hunt for P.Semilanceata, but I never bother picking them or taking a closer look. I don't want to risk getting "poison" on my fingers or contaminating a perfectly good batch of libs.
So, are there any other actives that grow in the same habitat at the same time of year that I could be looking out for? I know there is one that looks almost identical but with a flatter and wider cap, but I've not seen any of those yet. And can't even remember the name - anyone?
Are there any more that grow in the same sort of fields?
Also, I walk through woodland to get to my spot, so are there any that might grow in there, other than Amanita Muscaria?

I'm in UK by the way.

Thanks

You will not get poison on your finger while picking even bad mushrooms... Have seen people wear gloves even... Not necessary...

Depends what you mean by 'near by'  and where you are in the world

In one day, I have picked 4 different species of psilocybe mushrooms, but different habitats.

Liberty caps, in fields tends to be the loner species in my experience. In a liberty cap field once, I found some mushroom which I am pretty sure was a psilocybe sp. but have only seen it once... Keep looking each year for it!

On the other hand... Liberty caps are by far my favorite mushroom...

you have a chance of finding P strictipes but you will never know unless you scope them.
you could maybe run into P linoforman which would be on shit, but without a scope it looks like a lib.but its ultra rare .
there are 2 other dung lovers P fimetaria and P subfimetaria. both have rings on the stipe but are SUPER rare!!

the one species i do find with my libs that ive had looked under the scope are some grass loving P stuntzii. the other active i find alot with libs is Conocybe cyanopus.

you may find Pan cinctulus , or Pan olivaceus too.

if your in Oregon on the coast ive heard of peeps having some azurescens share similar habitat.

OK thanks for the replies.

P.Strictipes - that's the one I was thinking of that looks like a flat Lib.

I'm in UK, as I said. England to be precise.

Think I'll just stick to hunting Liberty Caps then.

just cuz they are flat it doesnt mean they are P strictipes, libs can be flat too. its all about the spores.
