Liberty caps UK 2012 1

Today I saw my first liberty cap of 2012. Single cap on a well drained, slightly raised part of a north east facing slope, at an altitude of 1100 feet. This was after a week of cool, wet weather following a warm spell. Summer finds are common here in north Wales, but this early is exceptional in my experience. Has anyone else seen any yet?

I havn't seen any lately, a few weeks ago when it was raining for a fornight non-stop I found hundreds of the look-a-likes, you get some really look-a-likes that when I was walking with my brother who is egar to find some actives did not no the difference. The colours are all the same, but there is some strange 6th sense in mushroom picking that can detect look-a-likes from the real ones.

I know you want pictures, but sorry I'm useless at that sort of stuff. I did take a picture on my phone but it wasn't very good. I would like with hindsight to have taken a picture of it with the bluebells that were growing within a mile of it to really give authenticity to it being a late spring find. No mistaking what I saw though, I've been finding them for over 30 years and this was clearly a mature liberty cap. By the way, I returned to the same hillside today, and within a few metres of where I saw the specimen last week, there was a cluster of 4 pins. Again I'm 100% certain of their identity. I didn't take any photos this time, but will try to return in the next few days and try to get a picture.

well without a pic its horseshit to think you should get to start an official thread for the year!! it bugs me people are so fuckin desperate to get to make threads like that and have their name set in stone for the season. sorry to be an ass but thats just the way it has to be. no pics no official thread.

Edit: You should somehow get a camera and head back where you saw those pins, if they're already visible they should mature quite fast. If indeed you have picked libs for the last 30 years I'd reckon it would be quite hard for you to go wrong on the id. Now I'm so eager to see this so... you said 'A', so you have to say 'B'!

Not liberty caps, looks like a mixed collection of Panaeolus and Panaeolina sp., possibly also Agrocybe. Take some prints if you need a more accurate id.
(On a side note, we are still waiting for the OP to dig up photos, so until then this thread probably should be regarded as a sleeper, despite the tantalizing title.)

Hard to tell, I'm not at all confident with this genus but if I have to say something I'd say it resembles Panaeolus acuminatus. It would however probably turn out to be P. papilionaceus.
I might be all wrong though, try and print it and see wether it turns out jet black or darkish brown. Could be Panaeolina sp.

No it isn't, the stem looks too dark and brittle.

It's a Panaeolus, likely papilionaceus. Inactive. None active in first mixed collection.
-------------------- Pain is temporary. It may last for a minute or an hour or a day or even a year but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it will last forever.

Not in the UK myself but you should be looking for Panaeolus cinctulus.

Didn't manage to get back to take photos of the pins I saw last week, but have managed to get the picture of the single cap I found on 12th June to my computer. Also found a fresh cluster today, in the same area, which I took photos of too, which I'll try to put up soon.

Here is the the cluster I found today. Not the best of photos I'm afraid, but hopefully clear enough.

Well, I guess this is the official thread then! Nice find! Which county did you find them in? I might have to go for a walk this weekend.

I found them in Montgomeryshire, but see no reason why there shouldn't be some out elsewhere at altitude. I usually find the first caps of the year over 1000feet, and more often than not on land that has been disturbed in the very distant past, places like where old buildings have been, small quarries etc. I suspect that factors like changes in aspect, slope, drainage and soil depth allow tiny areas to become ready for fruiting a few weeks earlier than the surroundings, but this is just my guess. The majority of my early season finds are on north or north east facing hillsides, but I do know a south west facing meadow that for some reason often produces in July if conditions are right. It's so good to be out in the hills at this time of year, finding anything is just a bonus.

I want a picture of your shrooms next to a newspaper from today so we can be sure the pictures are from now and not earlier years
