Who are some guitarists you think, are absolute frauds? Touted as hot shit on a guitar, but they don't do anything really hot?
My nominee is BB King. He plays two or three notes and everyone rolls their eyes and says "Oh, BB King, what feel..."
It's the emperors new clothes syndrome. I dont think he is shit. Who are some others?

Kirk Hammett. He's sloppy as hell and really not the most imaginative lead guitarist. Sloppy playing in the metal genre doesn't resonate with me.
Yngwie Malmsteen. He can definitely play fast, but it all sounds the same to me. Nothing but a show-off.

Honestly, the two guitarists from my favorite bands: Tool and STS9. Both Adam Jones and Hunter Brown are decent, and somewhat unique, hut they ain't the hot shit. Particularly Hunter, when listening to past shows, has a problem hitting all the right notes.

I'm pretty sure starefire_xes is legendary on guitar. I think I heard some stuff he uploaded, and he def has a rep here at the Shroomery. That said, I do disagree about BB King, I've heard him really jam, and I think he's great and improvising with other people too, which is its own talent.
My nominee would be The Edge, though I'll admit I'm far from the first person to call him out. He's inventive, but a pretty shit guitar player once his effects are stripped down.

Is playing fast all that matters? I mean if it's just style that these guitar players are being judged on then this will turn into a shouting match about whose favorite guitar player is the the most favorite.
Jimi Hendrix was a phony, that's for sure.

When you say fraud guitar players I think of everyday folks (myself included) that continue to call ourselves guitar players even though I havent played in a band since 2004 and I rarely get the guitar out of it's case anymore.

BB King is in fact the shit so you are wrong sorry...
I was never that crazy about that Eric Clapton guy myself, he's mediocre but I wouldn't go as far as calling him an absolute fraud.

Agreed his solo stuff was shite, but some of the stuff he did with bands like Cream and Derek and the Dominos is totally awesome. His early stuff with the Yardbirds is cool too.

George Thorogood. I have a session friend who plays all over the world with different people and was in Jay and the Americans. He told me Thorogood was once asked to sit in at a live venue and somebody handed him a guitar. He said "I can't play this, it's a regular guitar." Apparently his sound is all odd tuning tricks. I don't care. I love his music anyway. Most of these greatest musicians arguments are crap. You either like the music or you don't. I don't care if it's hard to play or not. Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music) is no guitar genius but I love his style. Same with Gary Green (Gentle Giant).

I'm with you two Clapton seems to be hit and miss.
Tom Morello is by far my favorite guitarist of all times although he did sell out a little when he started making video game appearances on top of eveything else he was famous for. I think your music should carry you to the next generation without having to change the way it's delivered to them.

Obviously kidding there, but I dont care enough about what guitarists think about themselves to have an opinion on them. Ive tried taking up guitar numerous times but just couldn't commit. If you can play at least a little and aren't a douche about it you're fine by me.
