 Why Do You Have Tattoos?

I have read the threads on tattoos and have noticed that a lot of people here have them. I personally have a full sleeve that starts at my knuckles and goes all the way to my chest. I got it because I am an artist (not a tattoo artist) and I absolutely love quality artwork! My sleeve is also very spiritual and it is an outward expression of who I am inwardly. For those of you who have tattoos my question is, why did you decide to get them? And for those of you who aren't tat'd up, what are your reasons for not getting them?

I usually just tell people "Why not?"
Mine's incredibly basic and on my leg, so people don't ask about it very often anyway.

Tattoos symbolize stages/events/things in my life. I try not to associate direct meaning to them, they represent different things at different times.
Overall, I feel a desire to seperate and decorate myself, and getting tattoos is a method of reclamation and affirmation, in addition the ritualistic aspect of them is something i desire in my life....
I however, find it very difficult to communicate this in person and prefer not to talk about them.

agreed 100%. after having hundreds of people ask me what my tattoos symbolize it got old trying to get them to understand why i got them. I don't plan on getting anymore tattoos until I accomplish some goals I've set for myself

Im actually at the point of having accomplished some goals or at least successfully transitioned into a different stage of life, and JUST decided to get another pair of tattoo's soon, after about 3 years since my last.
I am in a more positive place than when i got my first 3 tattoo's and i feel like these tattoo's will have a different character to them...

I have 11 tattoos because I found it as a healthy and very enjoyable hobby after quitting drugs. It's a way for me to express my individualism through something that feels really good.

I'm right around the corner myself. i haven't been tattooed in about 3 years, but I've already got some really unique ideas and placements for them whenever these goals of mine are achieved. Most likely around summer 2013

To look cool. Anyone that says different is just lame. I got a buddy who has some cool tattoos but he always tries to put meaning to them and it's lame. He points to it and says "this corner represents my dad. This is my mom. This here mean that I'm honest. This part here is symbolism of me trying to put meaning behind my tattoos"...
It's like.. dude.. if a picture of a tiger. It looks sweet. Just admit that you wanted a tiger tattoo because it would look cool cu.
Know what I mean ? having a tattoo with meaning is nice though. I have some with great meaning as well. I agree with it. But if you just want something to look cool then dont have a hard time admitting it lol.
Me personally. I I got a couple family tattoo's and some band tattoos. Lots of people dont agree with band tattoos but I love them. Sparks good conversations and they look sick. The way I see it, I have spend A LOT of time listing to certain bands over the years. So much time. They brighten my day and mean a lot to me. They are important to me so I have no problem getting a band tattoo.
I also like how a band tattoo can restrict you to a certain point in time. Every time I see that Misfits tattoo It just brings me right back to highschool lol. You cant full grow up with a misfits tattoo and it brings back so many cool memories. Punk has always been a big and blunt part of my life and so I see my music tattoos as kinda of like symbols of certain chapters of my life. To make sure I don't forget any of my stages of regret lol 
I always liked the idea of getting a tattoo that you could regret. Having something permanent on your body really is a trip. Thinking of how it will be there until the DAY YOU DIE is serious shit.
I'll get some shit for saying this but. Don't take tattoo's that seriously. When you get one, just have some fun and take it lightly. If you have to high and serious expectations then you might just get one that you regret lol. As long as they look good and are done well then have no fear kids !!!!! Oh and the only tattoo's I slightly regret is only because they could have been better so I need to get them fixed up and altered. And also because I wish I had saved that area for an even cooler tattoo.
BUT. getting a tattoo on your hands, head, neck or forearms is a bit more serious. For career reasons obviously. But if you can cover them up. Fuck it. Have some fun

The people who do it to look cool get 1 or 2 tattoos strategically placed. The majority don't do it to look cool.

Im pretty much exactly in line with this as I am an artist and bla blah blah. I appreciate art so much
why not have it on my body? Its also a great way to forget about the world for a moment when your getting
tattooed. Almost therapeutic.
