Are You an Eccentric?
    #16382162 - 06/14/12 07:42 PM (10 months, 29 days ago)

"According to studies, there are eighteen distinctive characteristics that differentiate a healthy eccentric person from a regular person or someone who has a mental illness (although some may not always apply). The first five are in most people regarded as eccentric:"

Nonconforming attitude
Idealistic
Intense curiosity
Happy obsession with a hobby or hobbies
Knew very early in his or her childhood they were different from others
Highly intelligent
Opinionated and outspoken
Unusual living or eating habits
Not interested in the opinions or company of others
Mischievous sense of humor

I'm no mathematician but I do not count 18 characteristics there

Yes, I fit those traits.  Your wiki page brought me to this book called "Eccentrics: A study of sanity and strangeness."  Seems intriguing.  Maybe I'll read it one day.

Of course. Everyone would consider themselves eccentric.

Seems interesting.

Description:

"After years of research, a practicing psychotherapist has proof that eccentrics are usually healthier than the rest of us-as well as more creative, more idealistic, more opinionated, and much more fun to read about. Dr. David Weeks fills his hook with fascinating case studies, including Joshua Abraham Norton, who once proclaimed himself Emperor of America and even convinced many people to consider themselves his subjects: Dr. Patch Adams, founder of the Gesundheit Institute and a physician who believes that humor fosters healing and dresses as a clown to treat his patients; and Florence Foster Jenkins, a would-be diva whose love of music was exceeded only by her lack of talent, but whose wealth enabled her to stage a recital at Carnegie Hall, Entertaining, funny, and thought provoking, Eccentrics introduces a series of extraordinary men and women-and encourages us to enjoy our own healthy eccentricities as well." (From Amazon).

The only complaints seem to be it is shallow and anecdotal.

Personally, I'm quite intuitive and empathetic. I've been able to relate to "eccentric" people and seem to understand them better than others. The peculiar sense of humor is almost always intriguing as well.

IMO, the defining quality is observing how strongly they conform in group settings. Our behavior, despite being dynamic and unique to each individual, is quickly corralled like livestock in social environments. Eccentrics, by contrast, are usually themselves whether completely alone or in public.

Under your test, self confidence would then equal eccentricity.  This doesn't seem accurate.

Self-confidence isn't analogous to eccentricity. What I meant to say is that eccentrics don't compromise their apparent "weirdness" to appease social settings and norms.

Self-confidence measures usually entail adaptability and resilience in a variety of group conditions. Eccentrics are more static; they aren't adaptable, nor are they resilient. You get an eccentric at 8am alone, and you get an eccentric at 8pm in the ball room.

Maybe.  It seems like you are hitting Asperbergers more than eccentricity.  To me, eccentrics do not see the value in blending into the "herd rules" and thus choose to not blend whereas people with Asperbergers never get that choice.

I have all the attributes in the OP and also pass Playful Hate's "test."

However, i would place myself between normal and weird, I do not consider myself terribly eccentric, although my parents would probably describe me as one.

Interesting to think about. I would like to read that book aswell ...

Interesting, and good point. I think the difference being that Aspies don't quite understand social rules and can't play the games, whereas eccentrics usually understand them all too well and either refuse to play, or are playing their own game. Taken to the extreme however is the schizophrenic model; e.g. laughing inappropriately or chiming in with abstract sayings that are mostly self-referential.

Abstract sayings that are mostly self-referential?

Like puns? I'm so guilty of puns and wordplay, I find them finding their way into almost everything I say..

maybe.. maybe I'm a poet...

but just... but just don't know it..

This and also inside jokes that are literally inside jokes, only jokes you get

The unusual eating habits I for sure judge people as crazy for doing. I knew this guy once who got a waffle and he put like no joke six or 8 things on it. There was like bacon and syrup and strawberries and blueberries and whipped cream and bunch of other things. It was like a monstrous pile of self-hate

im eccentric, I suppose. I am certainly different from other people. sometimes I feel out of place, but i dont care, just something i feel in some situations other people wouldn't even think of. I don't feel the need to nor do i try to 'fit in' but it doesn't mean im not trying to lose this gut to be healthy, the ladies, and just the overall wel-being from all the healthiness derived from my foods!

Some folks have nicknamed me "Free-spirit"

But I don't think it means much when I come from a small deadbeat town and I compare myself to all the wild folks in the world.

I feel like I'm eccentric but I still try to fit in.

When I was a preteen discovering myself and everything, I didn't give a fuck.  I had spiritual experiences listening to music and thought no one else could feel the things I could feel.  I realized their were tons of avenues in our own minds.

I remember one day hanging out with my cousin and some friends when I fell asleep in this playground listening(basically meditating) to music on my ipod.  I woke up later from the smell of cigarette smoke, walked around and everything was absolutely astoundingly beautiful.  No one could hurt me or make me feel anything lesser.  The trees, grass and everything were perfect and I felt like a part of it.  I remember thinking that must be how drugs felt.

Fast forward to highschool, drugs came along-they didn't do shit as far as my spirituality goes -at least compared to music.  I spent everyday at school playing computer games(everyone in our school had macbooks) and just waiting for time to go by. I feel like I've become homogenized with everyone else that went to my high school.

I just kinda skimmed on by, searching for people I could relate to.  Hung out with every clique and group, still smoking reefer and whatever else came along.  Constantly on the internet reading jive.

and I guess that's where I'm at now.  I realize I need to explore around my mind but I haven't done much about it.

I'm still searching for people who know where it's at and but I don't think any one group has what I'm looking for.  Atleast no group I've ever found.

Now I've gotta decide what to do with my life and shit, but this post is getting long and off-topic.

It was nice to write all of this out though.

Being eccentric isn't eccentric to someone who really is eccentric.

It is what it is
