special effects are now banned
    #16374574 - 06/13/12 04:09 AM (11 months, 4 days ago)

If special effects were banned from movie making, do you think the quality of movies would improve?  Maybe this is all perspective, but it seems like American cinema has been going downhill for several years now.  It's just riding on sequels, movies from shitty books, high schooler level comedies, and super-special-effects-no-story-trash.  And when there is a story, the movie spells everything out for you so even the most moronic viewer can keep up.  It has gotten to the point where I don't watch movies anymore unless they have an absurdly high rottentomatoes rating.  It is a waste of time.

nah, if they cut out special effects, hollywood as we know it would go into a 'depression'

like you said, they are out of ideas in a viscous way.

That depends on how you'd define "special effects" and what parameters you set on the boundaries of what can/can't be done.

Just today, as I was watching M*A*S*H, I realized it was the most recently produced film I've watched in a long time, and that was in 1970.  I've been watching a LOT of films from the '30s and '40s.  And they're great.

But that's not to say that all movies that rely heavily on special effects are bad.  Every year there are great effects driven films that come out around the world.

Yes, I have heard there are still great foreign films being made.  Can you recommend a few?

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo swedish version was pretty good. Its got a bit more content then the one they released in theaters not too long ago if you've seen that.

Well, I don't watch a lot of modern films.

Some of my favorite foreign films (assuming you're American):

Rashomon (Japan)

La Dolce Vita (Italy)

Run Lola Run (Germany)

Amelie (France)

Metropolis (Germany)

Brain Candy (Canada)

Zombi II (Italy)

Let the Right One In (Sweden)

American studios brutalize Swedish films.  I do like Rooney Mara (the actress who played Salander in the American film), but she can't compare to Noomi Rapace.

Nice.  Where do you procure these films?  Downloading?

I check out most of my films through the inter-library exchange system.  You can get a lot of very obscure films for free that way.

Or d/l, whatever.

Are you referring to CGI? Because special effects in a way is what separates "theatre" from reality, even in a play, when a guy disappears through a trap door, that is a special effect. I personally don't think special effects are separable from movies; Not to say a movie relies on them, but I feel since movies deal with storytelling, it would severely hinder what you would be able to imagine. I consider good editing a special effect, for instance.

I don't think hollywood is going downhill, you have Nolan, Tarantino, Gilliam, Ridley Scott, etc still making movies that might not be great to some, but are definite attempts at art, compared to the disgusting landscape of sequels and remakes that seems to be the hollywood portrayed.

If I were to pick one from that list, I'd recommend 'La Dolce Vita'.  It's one of the most amazing films I've ever seen.  Just gorgeous and fascinating.

Indeed. When my friends that saw the american version told me they were disturbed by it I couldn't help but laugh. Compared to the original swedish version or the book the american version was pretty tame.

Rashomon is the one with the bandit claiming he killed a samurai and raped his wife right? If I recall correctly that was one of the better Akira Kurosawa movies. I liked 7 samurai a bit more though.

Yeah, that's Rashomon.  Technically, The Seven Samurai is probably a better movie, in composition, scope, and achievements.  But I prefer Rashomon for the story-telling.  Also contrasting the films are the magnificent sound score of Samurai vs. the no music approach to Rashomon.  It's interesting shit.

Tomorrow I'm watching 'Ran', Kurosawa's adaptation of King Lear.  Should be cool.

Tokyo Gore Police. (Japan) One of the best action movies ever, and what tarantino wishes he was doing with Grindhouse.

I'd consider seeing that movie based on it's name alone.

Death Proof was, imo, Tarantino's career worst.

it's pretty good. really campy and gorey but with like buckets of fake blood and latex/foam rubber, not CG.

Perfect.  CG has it's place, but most of the time I prefer special effects to be done in practicality.  It looks so much better to me.

I love schlocky gory action, but in America, what is considered hardcore balls to the wall violence is usually not compared to other country's films and smaller productions.

I remember when i left the theatre from Dawn of the Dead remake (which I consider a kinda cheesy action movie, not really a horror movie. Actually I'm quite bitter how zombies have turned into action movies, in the way how vampires turned from Nosferatu and got progressivley more faggier) a kid was saying how it had "balls to the wall gore"

DAY of the dead was gory than the dawn remake. Hell, I think the original Dawn was gorier.

But yeah, fuck the Zombie action movie. It's why I don't consider 28 Days later a horror film, but an Action movie with horror flavor.

Anyway end rant.

meatball machine was also good for this, with a spattering of some really poorly done CG at the end. it was like they used their entire budget for the final scene or something. horrible movie but highly entertaining.
