I am 3 weeks into colonizing GT/Z-Strain in BRF cakes do they look like they are moving slow to you? inoculated them on may 16 with 2 MS syringes. Just recently discovered that having them in a dark incubator was no good so now I have them on a shelf above my tv getting ambient room light and temps. seems like they stalled a lil...not much difference from a week ago. will be spawning to coir/verm with no casing...other than that I have one monotub 100% ready to go...working on the other...saran wrap window with double faced tape is awesome....plan on having 1 6500k above each tub with the mini fan goin on some kind of cycle. I do have an ultrasonic but i think im just gonna mist.
My whole goal with the 2 tubs is to reach 8oz dried. Does anyone see this happening from a first grow newb?

UPDATE: 7-7-2012
So for shits n giggles I decided to throw a 1" tall, fully developed and sporing mushroom in to one of my WBS jars.
After shaking it around a bit to align it to my liking, this is what it looks like 4 days later.
You can kinda see the cap, spores deposited everywhere!
 
I also took it upon my self to pluck a pin and throw it is a WBS jar, here is what this one looks like 4 days later.
 
If no contams are present I will make a GLC from the pin clone and knock up every jar that I can possibly stuff WBS in to.
No pics of the cakes yet, because there is nothing to show but about 1 pin per cake average, I really need to get this bulk underway, MS cakes piss me off, lol.

Looks good man thier coming along great. misting sounds ok but thats alot of work. If you dont want to use the ultrasonic have u considered just using perlite. much less work then spraying and from what i have heard tends to work better too. also u wont have to risk spraying your mushrooms with water

Just mist it or humidify it.
shroomer, im not punning you, i've used perlite. but not in a bulk(mono) grow, and im assuming you were unaware of that.

o didnt c u where doing bulk sorry its getting late but u could put the substrate in a tray on top of the perlite leaving a little space around the edge. I should also mention that if you have enough substrate in the bottem of a bulk grow it can actualy provide its own humidity. If u decide to let the substrate create the humidity just keep a eye on the humidiy levels. I have heard that 3 inches should be enough substrate to keep most terrariums humidity high enough.

if i do choose to humidify....how often should i run it? like 10 min 4 times a day or sumtin?
The goal 8oz but im gonna guess 4-5oz....being a newb.... i always like under estimating....makes life a lil better!

Do you have holes in your foil tops? If it stalled out it could be due to lack of air exchange. Im no expert though.

Ok, so heres updated pics of my babies and my setup, thought they were stalled but they werent.... just got 2 6500k 23 watt cfls...pretty as light shade of blue...if they were a little cheaper i would buy a bunch for the whole house. anyways here they are:

Humidify it? 
It's a monotub.
It creates its own environment with the substrate.
It does this wonderfully with a fan on low in the room, pointed away from the tubs, and very loose poly during fruiting.
Tape up the bottom holes for colonizing.
Stuff poly TIGHT AS FUCK in the top holes.
Setting and forgetting is going to be the absolute best for a first ime grower. Trust me when I say, you will fuck up your moisture content if you don't know what you're looking at on a monotub and try to mist and fan. But one set-n-forget success and you'll know what the ideal conditions will look like.
And generally with coir/verm, you're gonna get 4-6oz dry on first flush.
Good luck! And beware who you heed advice from. Simpler is better for your first time, and honestly it's better every time.

Ok, so when i go to spawn to bulk ill just tape the bottom ones, polyfill the top ones tight as fuk, and let it colonize for about 10 days give or take a day or 2, then when i see about 5-10 pins im gonna lighten up on the polyfill on top and undo the tape on bottom and polyfill that lightly....then set it and forget it till harvest? fuck fanning and misting? the way i have it set up is in my closet, which is in the corner of my room, there is a window with a fan that runs 24/7 blowing out of my room,( ) the draft actually passes right in front of the closet door, i think i am goin to leave the closet door open 24/7. i also have this little fan hanging that i was gonna pop the lids and let it run for a min or 2 to fan them out, any input would be helpful.

Let em colonize till the pins appear, yes. It could take up to 20 days.
Here's how I dial in my mono conditions visually:
Loose loose loose poly on all the holes. Pull it apart until you have a very thin puffball, and stick it in so it covers the hole and basically nothing more. If you're not blasting the fan too hard, you can even make it so thin you can see through it.
You'll see a lot of condensation on the sides of the tub at the start of fruiting- the idea is to get your polyfil thickness set up so the sides of the tubs always have some condensation on them. If the walls dry up excessively quickly, add a little more polyfill. But be careful- a little poly can make a big difference.
A good sign is moist walls that have dry circles around your poly'd holes. The top holes may have a dry line extending below them, almost touching the substrate and that is fine. But if the walls are almost dried up, you'll want to stuff the poly a little tighter.
It's harder to explain, once you see it and start fruiting, you'll get it quickly.
Misting and fanning can be done after the first flush but you don't really need to if have it dialed in properly.
The substrate should have a nice sheen of dew-like droplets over it, but they should be small. Puddles and big drops are not ideal, and when you fruit, you can sop them up with a paper towel or tilt the mono and let them drip down the side. When you fruit it, after removing the tape and such, give it a good fanning for a minute or two with a dry lid or even the fan will work. Pop the lid on and let it tell you what it needs, if anything.
Hope this helps! It might be better for your tub to sit in the room with the fan, closets are not so good for airflow.

It's easier to see it visually than try to explain. Sorry if I was long winded, I took a sleeping pill a bit ago and it's starting to work its insomnia crushing magic 
Just run the fan in the window on low and i'd run the fan in the closet on low, not pointing directly at the tubs. and keep an eye on the moisture on the walls. Good luck!

thats what the verm layer is for....i know that the top of the jars have consolodated but the bottoms are still colonizing.....thus the top is more resiliant in fighting off contams...i think im good

Ok, just giving u guys a little update on my situation/setup/preporation.
So its getting closer and closer to my jars...I mean glasses to being 100%, I have taken the liberty of doing some shopping...bought myself a Nesco Food Dehydrator, 5 New 1" Magnetic Stir Bars to go with the one I already have, which for $10 shipped was a steal, some [url=http://www.sciplus.com/search.cfm?utm_source=internal&utm_medium=search&utm_content=cf&utm_campaign=celsearchtest&formfield1234567891=58&formfield1234567892=15&formfield1234567894=&term=rubber stopper&btnHand.x=0&btnHand.y=0]Self Healing Injection Ports[/url], not neccesary but when you live down the block from the place 5-10 cents each is a bargain. I have also got my hands on some more glasses to knock up with some LC i plan on making from some of the mycelium i have already.
Built my own magnetic mixer which now has the option to use a 9v or dc wall wart. See Link In My Signature
I prefer glasses over jars I find them easier I cant find wide mouth canning jars that easy locally and refuse to buy them online. Also I find Garfield to be quite entertaining.
I also plan on building a flow hood similar to the one in my signature sometime after my first flush, so I can begin agar work in a sterile environment. I plan on using the small baby food jars as petri dishes, if I can find any. Might also think about using BRF as an Agar substitute. Strain isolation has caught my eye since i knew that MS is a crap shoot. If I am going to do this I am going to do it right and Produce the best fruits possible, otherwise I feel I wasted my time.
I also plan on getting 4-8 of these 116 Quart Monsters for my next grow...BIG BULK....that is if all doesnt go south on this run...

Ok so after days of debating and talking myself out of my own grow, (take it how u will), I have decided to go in a slightly different direction and birth my cakes as cakes instead of 2 tubs. And screw a monotub for right now, for more than one reason. I realized that I was just not going to have enough spawn for a descent ratio for two tubs so I was going to just spawn all of them to one tub. Which if you think about it is kinda stupid for a first grow when you have no spores to back you up. If the tub gets a contam, you're screwed, gotta buy more spores. But now I have 10 different chances at seeing SOME KIND OF RESULTS. So I whipped up a SGFC and got to birthing. One cake that is, waiting on the rest to consolodate. Hes got 2 23 Watters above him, soaking it all up. wowz: I have dunked hime for 24 hours and rolled hime in sterilized verm, misted 40 minutes later real good but didnt fan, will next time.
    
Another good thing about this is the fact that my friend has had a pressure cooker(8qt) this whole time and didnt say anything until he saw me struggling with the not enough spawn issue. What a dolt, I asked hime 3 times....Anyways I went a head and PC'd 4 master grain spawn jars of WBS(via Docs WBS Tek), 1 smaller WBS jar for a GLC, 1 Shot Glass, 1 Spoon, 1 Scalpel, and 4 BRFAS(Brown Rice Flour Agar Substitute). First time at BRFAS, and I think I fucked it up lol. You be the judge.
   
I made a SAB(Still Air Box) and I plan on innoculating all of the WBS jars via C2G(Cake To Grain) by breaking a cake in half and cutting small cubes out of the center(If anyone knows a better way to do this from a cake please feel free to reply, my ears are open, I dont think im gonna do the transfer until tomarrow or the next day. Which brings up the question(s) :
1) How long do I have to inoculate the WBS jars that I just PC'd? Can it wait a week or do I risk the WBS drying out? Some of them have a 1/4" GE hole w/ 1 layer of tyvek and polyfill, and some have a 1/2" GE hole w/ 2 layers of tyvek and polyfill. I figured the double layer of tyvek helps the fact that its a bigger hole.
2) Does my WBS look ok? Too wet, too dry?
3) Is there an up to date tek on an agar substitute that anyone uses besides BRF? And yes I know that I should just buy some agar.

Hmm..I've never done WBS always rye but I am pretty sure you can let your jars sit for quite some time after PC'ing. Not sure about moisture content with WBS though, but if you followed that tek you should be good.
Not going to get 8oz now bro, lol. But good idea with not putting all your eggs in one basket. Take some prints from this grow and you'll have them whenever you want

you could just cut a little bit of myc off one of your cakes and transfer it to your WBS. Make sure you flame/alcohol sterilize the knife first.
your grain looks good to me. Maybe a little on the wet side, but as long as you PCed it for 1.5 hrs you should be pretty successful.

1. You could probably wait a week no prob. your WBS looks a little on the wet side. i finally got my moisture content right on grains after many many fails. you want the WBS dry on the outside when u load into jars cuz the moisture is absorbed during your 18-24hr soak.
you GE holes might be too much. depending on how tight the polyfill is packed. i have used the same setup of lids before, i much rather prefer using Synthetic Filter Disks and RTV silicone injection ports.
be careful of con tams coming thru the tyvek after inoc.
2. as far as agar goes, i heard that spore depot has pre made agar plates. i think 5 for $7. thats what i would do.
3. take some cakes and case! or use as spawn to coir/verm in a bigger container. 1:1 ratio. cover w foil and put back to colonize. then put in fruiting chamber about 10 days later basically its a mini mono tub you put in a fruiting chamber lol

Thank you...
on antother note i willnot be doing bulk from these cakes, its too much of a risk...if i get a contam than the whole batch is ruined...if i do cakes i have 10 chances at more spores, tissue samples....AND SHROOMS!
Bulk will be done with a tissue sample to grain masters...then g2g, and another g2g....then BIG BULK.

it is not that risky,
dude, at least case. take a tupperware bowl, crumble your cakes. take some vermiculite, wet it to FIELD CAPACITY...you obviously know what that is. MICROWAVE it for 5 minutes. You can even do this with like seed starter potting soil. just microwave, let cool to touch, and then put over the crumble cake. tin foil, let colonize for 3 day, then put in fruiting chamber.
and you are dunking you cakes before fruiting right?

yes for 24 hrs...give or take..and the one that is in the fc i am fine misting and fanning like crazy. Watching hundreds of people grow theyre cakes over the last 3 months makes me realize something....my cake looks fucking amazing...a couple pins but still...im waiting for her to blow the freak up. Im expecting 30-50 pins LOL!
I misread what u said......I think casing a few might be worth it....so what just crumble and case...in a bag with my hands or use like a cheese grater?...I also have a blender but that might be overkill. and why give 3 days to colonize.....theyre already 100%+....u mean 3 days to let it recover right?

don't trip potato chip! just worry bout fanning. I've never misted.
definitely casing is worth it. use several cakes per tray (i used aluminum foil pie trays..and i dunked between flushes). don't use a blender, especially the family blender. lol. did that to make BRF from rice. might have caused the divorce. anyway.
just break em up with your hands. make the depth of cakes at least 2 inches. the deeper the better. you want your container to be unclear (light issues and side pinning).
after you case, put back in your incubator, or closet shelf like me, and wait for 3 days. you'll see myc poking thru the top of the casing layer. thats how you know its ready for fruiting. maybe mist the casing laye if it needs it. you'll have a bowl of shrooms in a couple weeks, 
then take a tissue sample of a big shroomy and take it to agar. make a master grain .etc etc
mushroom videos. watch and learn all. buy

Perlite doesn't really find much use in bulk grows. Though I have heard of people adding it a bulk mix for aided moisture retention, but I'd rather just use straw for that because of the added nutrient benefit.
Just spawn to your bulk in whatever you're using (tray or monotub, or whatever), let that colonize and conslidate and then put it out to fruiting conditions.
I'd expect by now you know the paramters of colonizing, consolidating, fruiting conditions, how to care for substrates, ect.. Of course you'll have questions, as everyone does, which is great because that's how you learn.
Good job on your first harvest. Feels special, doesn't it?

But whats with the hollow stipes? I am fruiting at 83F, i wonder if thats got a lot to do with it.

I've read that fruiting at a lower temperature created denser and more potent fruits because it takes longer for them to grow. I don't know how true that is. I do know I have had better performance in the low to mid 70's than I did in the low 80s.

Hey girl, no but i have 16 more cakes almost colonized and i planned on trying that among other things...i have smaller cakes that i plan on stacking with verm in the middle...i plan on casing a few, putting spawning a few to to a monotub...i have done my first G2G transfer with WBS and it is amazing. G2G 3 days ago and most of them are at 30%. I have also been messing with GLC but not liking it too much, G2G is running circles aroung it. The purple thats on the jars is from a towel that i put in while sterilizing...i guess its never been washed b4.

Are you doing g2g in a SAB? If yes, how big is it? I am going to be using wbs too? I hate it cuz its gets everywhere. How are u drying it is my big question... I've spread it out on newspaper before, but I just spill it lolz. I like corn, but with the drought, that's not gonna be cost effective. Wbs is cheap! Have u tried agar yet? I've walked myself thru it enough that I think in ready to try SOMEDAY!
Are u gonna do a mono?! Ive never done one. I'm gonna experiment and see if I an get more oz per jar doing mono vs. DOCs hybrids. Wanna do straw, but think that would be messy in my apt.

Yes, I G2G in my 66qt SAB....but mine is quite tall for me, if i could get a wider deeper one that would be sweeet, i have big arms so.
I follow docs tek for WBS to the t....and just let it strain for like 20-30 minutes with a plate over the top of the grains so as not to dry out the top layer too much...honestly i think its still too wet, but its working . Next time im gonna strain for 40 minutes to an hour just to see the difference.
I am doing my first trades right now, agar on its way! I'm thinking it will be easy tho...seems easy enuf.
Yes the Plan is to do monotubs pretty much from here on out...except for experiments with casing and such.
Also plan on getting 2 greenhouses set up to do bulk trays, but thats later.
So far i have about an OZ dry from my cakes plus me and my cousin already ate like 5 grams(2.5 ea.)...not as potent as i had hoped but im thinking thats from a low dose...im gonna do 5 grams dry myself next.

The problem I have with monos is consistantly I see people use X jars of spawn to 50/50 and only end up with the same ammount of oz as jars
But I say RR do like 6 jars to a straw basket and got 10 zips dry I believe. Either way, it was more bang for your jar, but still want to try. I've got some portabello myc goin right now for the local farmers market. Gotta keep the hobby alive during this weird period of life.

very true, i will be using 5 quarts of spawn for my first tub, using 1 brick of coir and 3 quarts of verm...1-2 ratio
Depending on how that goes i will up the ratio or down it to my needs/wants/desires

Not really, if u watch RR's videos he holds it up to his face and sniffs it...the manure u want to use is feild aged and has no smell what so ever other than of dirt. even during pasturization, smells like dirt.

Was your grains still a lil wet when u loaded them? How long did u pc for? Did u wipe down jars with alcohol real good before doing g2g?

just a lil but i didnt do a toilet paper test, let drain for 20-25 minutes with plate overhead, following docs WBS tek, every single other jar is fine tho, which lets me beleive its from not doing a peroxide dip b4 putting it in the jar. The trick is just in the one spot but i have like 12 different inoculation points from me shaking them like moracas.
Yes i wiped down the jars with alcohol paper towel and laid it over the loosened lid, cut an untouched peice of stem, lifted the lid and alcohol paper towel and threw it in, tightened followed by shaking.
I WILL BE DOING A H202 DIP FOR EVERY CLONE TRANSFER FROM HEAR ON OUT, ONE FUCK UP IS ENUF.

I'm doing my g2g from agar. Will eventually clone to agar. Agar wedge to master grain. Take the master g2g to 10 jars. Those 10 to 100! And stay outta my part of the city

Im not sure who recommended it but i think it was a 3% mixture with water, i would use bottled.
My only problem right now from blowing up like that is buying the jars...my pockets are hurting right now.

Ok so these jars are colonizing rapidly with very rhizomorphic mycellium, but the inoculation points are all turning yellow...maybe just "myc piss"(cant remember the name)? All of the jars were from the same syringe of spores. this is prabably day 14 or so.

yeah, i've seen it. there are 82 or so psts here, so i didnt read it all; is it a purchases syringe or did you make it? i saw it a lot when i decided i could use my microwave to boil the H2O yellow spots at the 'noc points, they turn orangish soon, and start to look crystally-like. might be from cube enzymes, i'm sure some is at least, but it's there to fight some contaminant, so theyre toast.
sucks a big red one, don't it?

i made the syringe myself...boiled water for 10 min....sucked it up and exponged it 4-5 times and capped it...let it cool and made a ms syringe in my sab...either the syringe wasnt clean or the print was dirty.

i just noticed this, but you may have left out a step. after you epxunge the hot water, you should fill it and let it sit for 10 minutes. repeat the expungiation process, then cap it and let it cool.
i think bacteria need a wet environment to live in, right?
simplefarmer, did you dry them before you ate them?

I did not let the water sit for 10 minutes and then expunge it and refill....i let the water sit in the syringe for a minute or 2 before each expunge(5 times) and on the last one capped it and let cool.
Edit: what i should have done was pc it afterwards.

ime the water always leaked out, i assume from the pressure (idk) but i tried it with the needle attached. maybe if you pc'd the needle separately and plugged the hole in the syringe?

I've seen so many ways to make syringes its crayzeee. I usually pc mine full of water and capped when I do something else. 2 birds- 1 stone.store in fridge wrapped in foil and sealed w a zipper baggie. Then in my glovebox, I dump spores in from the plunger end by removing it, and using a flamed xacto blade and scraping them off foil. That seems to be the win for me. I actually find the foil to be a slight pain in the ass. Thinking of doing prints on a cosmetic mirror. That will rock
