USB device drawing too much power?
    #16336616 - 06/05/12 05:12 PM (11 months, 11 days ago)

When I plug my iPhone into my MacBook Pro, without fail, the computer will soon return a message saying the device was drawing too much power and has therefore been disabled. It happens often and can become quite annoying when I need to charge my phone. My best guess is that there is a short in the cable somewhere, but it does it with every cable I have (granted they are all rather old).

Anyone have ideas as to what might be causing it or how to fix it?

Thanks!

couldn't say for sure, as a quick work around (possibly not practical) a powered usb hub (the kind w/ wall adapter) seems like it would potentially resolve your problem.... like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182212

otherwise, i'd start by testing your iphone w/ another mac to see if you could replicate it... then we'd know if there was an issue w/ the phone/cable or your mac in particular...

no power issue with other devices that are usb connected to your mac? What exact make and model is it? Btw laptops are infamous for having power issues, in all seriousness. Make sure that you only have the battery and charger in at the same time when your laptop is not in use. Otherwise, it doesn't need to have the battery charging with the power adapter.

I know you can run a memory test from bios for issues to test the memory. But since this is completely un related, I must admit I'm not enough of a computer whiz to say that I have any idea how to test for power issues. If the computer works fine otherwise, it's not a power supply issue, could be not enough power goes to the usb devices. Anyway, I agree with cosmic joke, try to find a device that charges the phone and allows it to connect to usb at the same time. But what confuses me, when you say drawing too much power, why in the world would an iphone need to draw power from the laptop?

It should safely use it's own power, and draw just enough power for data transfer. Does sound a bit like your usb isn't getting proper power from psu. Pain in the ass to open a laptop, none the less a mac book, and look at the power connectors(4 pin? Not even sure) that goes from psu to lap top main board. Then again, if all other usb devices are working correctly, then it's just some strange error you are getting, some misreading by the computer, for usb bios power supply. My next guess, a bios update? Doubt it, fixes configuration issues and compatibility more then anything else. I wonder if there is some way to check watts going to usb devices, and how much is needed to allow data transfer between an iphone and the usb connection. Or possibly the computer is trying to pull more mbps then the interface will allow, therefore giving some power error

Anyway, you won't find a way to test power going in and out, just the basic stats of what the psu should allow minimum and maximum for usb i/o on the board of your mac. Well, I'm sure I made this thread worst, oh well it's just what I do!

Is it an older MacBook pro?  If so, not all USB ports on the computer are the same.  One side had higher power ports than the other side (I don't remember which was which).  Also, the older MBP's only supported one high power device at a time.  The newer MBP's do not have these limitations.

Make sure you don't have any other USB device attached to the computer.  Try your phone on one side.  If that doesn't work, then try it on the other.  If that still doesn't work, let us know and I will help you troubleshoot some more.

Unrelated note about bad USB ports. My lab machine I am using at school has a bad USB port on it, the inside was all messed up. But I had no idea the USB was bad so I started the machine, it was running fine, plugged in the key board and the machine shut down. At least you laptop stays on when you plug your phone in.

The phone will stop charging sometimes when its plugged into the wall as well, but not nearly as often. It happens with both USB ports on my MacBook Pro. It's a few years old, but both USB ports are on the same side, so I don't know what you mean by an older model.

Thanks for all the input everyone, I'll try and find a computer to plug it into today and see what happens.
