Predisposition to psychosis/depression
    #16335103 - 06/05/12 11:03 AM (11 months, 9 days ago)

Hey everyone,

In this post I want to ask some questions regarding the predisposition to psychosis/depression. A friend mine and I intend to explore the realms of consciousness once again this summer. However, it has been quite some time (2 yrs.) since I have last tripped which is the reason for my post here.

Let me come to my question. What is meant with a predisposition to psychosis & how does it affect me in particular?

In order to give you some background on the mental health issues in my family:

1) Grandfather (whom i've never met) had his 'ups & downs', often staying in bed for weeks & suddenly being extremely active. Later my mother coined his behavious as being 'manic-depressive'. (This was back in the days when people did not (frequently) visit psychiatrists, so i'm not sure whether it was the right diagnose.) Truth of the matter is that he was not to be considered mentally healthy.

2) My mother has had her ups & downs, taking anti-depressiva on a daily basis which, as she claims, do the trick.

3) Myself, i've been a regular pot smoker and used shrooms about two of three times. I found these experiences to be extremely insightful and they have had this profound effect on how I perceive reality.
The only thing that I did notice, that when I'm 'hanging around' with friends, I get on the 'train of thoughts' much faster & intense than they do. Also, the spiritual side of psychedelics never occured to my friend, even though we took the same dose.

Based on this small overview, would you consider me a 'predisposed person', i.e. should I better not endeavor too many new psychedelic/spiritual trips? (I only intend to do cubes in the near future...)

I thank you for considering an answer to my questions.
Cheers,

Smokey J.

I'm not an expert by any means but I'll give you my opinion. If there is a history of psychosis in your family that you did not mention, you may be predisposed but with everything you said in your post I don't see that being an issue. It is likely that you have a predisposition to depression if your mother and her father were indeed afflicted. However, this doesn't really raise red flags for me as your family history does not appear to include psychosis, schizophrenia, etc. I do think that you should tread lightly though, especially if you feel concerned. You should also consider your current mental health: do you feel anxious often, depressed, disconnected from reality? All of these things could show an underlying issue or a predisposition.

I'd say that the best thing to do if you're set on using psychedelics again would be to slowly become acclimated to the mindset and to stick to low doses until you feel safe in that mindset. Keep a healthy/realistic mindset, have a trip sitter and make sure you control your set and setting. Keep some xanax around in case you need to abort any trip. You should pay very careful attention to how you're being affected by your usage. If you feel like you're slipping mentally or that the psychedelics are having a negative long term effect on your mental health I would take that as a sign that you should stop use. Good luck!
