Here are a few cacti which were labeled Trich Pasicana by the shop, but they were later confirmed Trich Terschekii by someone here

it was an old bent sterling silver candle holder. I melted it down and the flux I used melted away (lost my grip from palm sweat), making an exposed area where the brick I used, the flux and the silver were all touching. This caused a small amount of the iron compounds in the brick to solder to the silver. A small amount of sanding showed the silver below and let me know theciron layer is only micrometers thick, hence my wtf blob of an avatar. I did it out of curiosity. I plan on attempting to electrolytically refine/recrystallize it one of these days.

Turns out there's some rot at the base of my stetsonia..

The other side is dried up and hard, but the yellow-greenish side is somewhat soft, not squishy soft but definitely not healthy tissue. What's the recommended course of action in a case like this? Let it dry out on the table or perform surgery?

So it could just be normal hardening at the base and the softness/yellowing is just some precursor stage?

IMHO, if it's soft it can't be too good. I'd monitor it closely, keeping myself ready to cut and reroot.

A Wal-mart special I have had for a few years now. This particular cactus never came with any identification of the genus/species, but I have always loved the spines. An excellent cactus to pet when thinking and pondering

1st pic looks more like dirt/soil 2nd pic looks normal - the lighter/discolored portion just above the root looks just fine (normal appearance because it sits below top of soil), but the darker section hovering over it looks odd. it's not soil?

I too, like ferrel, wondered what it was.
@Tony: Your cactus is fine from what I can tell. The discolouration at the base is from it sitting below the soil surface. This is fairly typical, the epidermis(skin) will thicken and form a cork-like layer for protection against excess moisture and any soil nasties.

recently repotted
i kept this cutting out of the rest i had at a previous residence, because it had more fierce areoles/spines. not like the other PC cuttings i had, although i believe it's all from the same plant to begin with. it's a pup on a base from which a small root of about 5-6cm has grown, and now it's starting to take up water already. the meristem hadn't moved for maybe a year.

I think the root end looks normal too, but Tony says it's soft, which makes me suspicious. If anything, it should be a little harder than the green end, shouldn't it?

The dark spot is actually a damage site but it has scarred and hardened nicely, it's the other side that has some softness to it. I repotted it anyway into dry soil and will start watering after a few weeks. If it rots it'll be a good lesson for future grows. I'm leaving for Amsterdam tomorrow so hopefully I'll have some new active material to work with pretty soon.

Today I visited:

At a local college campus.
The first cactus I noticed was this lovely:

Then I stumbled onto a crime scene. This lovely lady had obviously been gang raped...

Looks like the old broad will recover but no doubt she will be punished again in the future...
