Nice idea for a thread. I've been collecting various Asclepiads over the last year, I think they're quite cool.
An old picture of S. variegata

While technically not a Stapelia, it's in the same tribe so I will post it here. First flower too.

Yeah Stapelias are awesome. Here's a couple of mine.
The blowies love em. They do such a good job mimicking carrion that they even lay their maggots inside.

The flies do love them. I haven't been lucky enough to get any to deposit eggs on the flower yet. My camera awaits that moment...

Why would you want them to lay eggs in the flower? That seems odd but maybe norm for tjese?

Because in nature that's what the flies do. The flowers aroma is very much like rotting flesh and this smell attracts flies to lay their eggs so their offspring can feed on the decaying matter. It's all a trick though to aid the plant in propagating its species.
I like to see natural processes in action in my garden so have been anticipating some eggs when they're in flower.

karode , your pic makes the flower look larger than in the flesh . i saw a single flower yesterday but bought a bigger clump not in bloom, might have to return and buy all of his epipylum and stapelia stock as hes not a greedy seller. is it unusual for them to flower in june?

The S. variegata can flower in June. I have a large clump with a couple of buds forming now.
