First block haverst:

@ 225ml of rye spawn
I have 2 more mushrooms growing on this block and the other blocks are starting to pin... The 200ml seems the best pinner for the moment but it's also the block I have the more spanked (it cracked a little bit)

Bonus pic: Ganoderma lucidum, first try on pasteurized aspen sawdust and spent coffee grinds

Wow thanks for the POTM !

I will compile all the data at the end, there should be more pictures in around 4 days. I hope I get decent yield but It doesn't look like I will reach 80 to 100% BE this time.

Thanks guys, it's not an awesome pinset unfortunatly. The fruits so far are beautiful so maybe I can supplement it a little more... We will see after this batch.

The temperatures are really hot these days, 24c in the day and maybe 2oc during the night... I wanted to put them outside during the night but finally I don't really have place for them outside (I live in appartement for now).

I'm sure I can tweek my greenhouse a lot more humidity wise. I will update as it grows.

Pretty mushrooms.  I'm sure you enjoyed them, and you picked at just the right time too.

Shiitake likes a varying temperature and humidity range.  Try letting the humidity repeatedly drop to around 60% or so during pinning, and then bump it back up again.

I'm getting a lot of mutation on most of the other blocks, and a few mushrooms seems to abord... I'm not very surprised for the mutation.

I have a pretty bad pinset so far, major improvement needed.

The mushrooms tasted very good, but I think the shiitake strain from SporeWorks are more aromatics... I could be wrong, I don't know yet if it's just substrate related or temperature, substrate aging, etc.
The cooking level may also be responsable for that.

2 things learned:

- My greenhouse need a lot of improvement, humidity cycles and temperature mostly.
- Next project: I will make sure I use at least 3 type of hardwood sawdust, straw and barks. I will test again with the same supplementation and spawn ratio on around 4 blocks again.

Conclusion:

The picture you saw here is the about the only mushrooms that grew here... It's totally my fault, I thought my greenhouse was good enough but it wasn't. The humidy was too low and the temperature were too high (it's around 26-27°C there days it's very hot).

The blocks has been put outside at a friend's house where he has a wannabe oyster mushroom greenhouse.

(boring part)
As you may know I'm unemployed for the moment because the restaurant where I used to work has burned last month. I worked here and there in the last weeks and today I'm going to work as a cook to promote a local butchery.
I still don't know why I said yes, I'm almost 25, I'm a good cook and its far from what I wanted as a job. Anyway I will respect my engagement and at least work for him this weekend.

I applied to be a cook for a government institution (provicial prison) and if I don't get the job I might be going back to school again. Being a cook is a very hard job (which is ok) but it's hard to find a decent salary + working full time all year long...(which is not ok)
(end of boring part)

So as I'm waiting to ether go back to school or get a real job I will grow 100 a few blocks of Agrocybe Aegerita with recycled hardwood sawdust from a "eco-log" company. They sells ecological logs to burn instead of real wood.
I might add a bit of spent coffee in that too, with wheat bran and gypsum. I will case all the blocks a grow them monotub style (in their bags).

I never grew Agrocybe Aegerita yet and I have no idea how I'm going to sell them if I succeed
I'm going to work hard and laugh a lot when I will harvest these mushrooms knowing nobody around here knows what the fuck they are haha

Just curious, as I just read through your little grow and It interests me.  I've been reading a lot on different edibles and I was wondering if there was a specific tek you followed or any certain guide you followed or if you can recommend any really good reading on shitake or even oysters as well.  I have been reading all sorts of random stuff but like i said I liked what you were doing here and would like to try it myself.  Thanks and good luck on future grows

I follow no particular tek, but I try to use the search engine the most I can.
Find 2 or 3 people here who have a lot of experience with the species you want to grow and try to find recent information they shared.

For oyster:
Experiment with grains, straw, spent coffee grinds, wood... Pretty much anything that people call "substrate" here haha, they eat everything!

Shiitake:
Wood based substrate, try to use at least 3 kinds of hardwood sawdust. Aged sawdust is better as far as I know. You can mix in a bit of bark and straw too.
Add around 2-5% gypsum and a very little bit of organic rice/wheat bran.
Supplemented substrate must be sterilized.

Inoculate the substrate with grain spawn at a very low ratio, try around 150ml for 1 lb (dry weight) of wood/straw substrate.
Experiment with differant ratio and, if you can, with as much shiitake strain possible. You will eventually find the perfect strain for your environement and methods.

Good luck! Please let me know if you do a growlog.
Simon

PS. Take a look at RogerRabbit's "Let's grow mushrooms" video. You can buy his DVD or download it for under 10$. It's by far the best document available to quickly understand how to make wood based substrate bags (+ a lot of other techniques).

My friend made a bit too much of pasteurized straw, I spawned 3 liter of Agrocybe Aegerita rye spawn to it... in a clear tub.

I think I will put a very thin layer of casing on top of it... If it ever colonize lol. I'm curious to see how well AA do on plain straw. I guess not very good, we will see.

If it does well it's going to be a very easy edible to grow indoor. I'd love to have an edible mushroom farm in my appartement in tubs.

Outdoor flush: 357 grams (fresh):

Final result:
Not bad, not good...
Total yield on the four blocks: 451,8 gr

So around 1/4 pounds per blocs...

Conclusion:
Will upgrade my wood recipe, with straw and barks first and I will use at least 3 differant kind of hardwood sawdust... Than I will start again to play with differant spawn ratio again to find the sweet spot.

For now, Agrocybe Aegerita!

Question.......why not refine your FC and fix the problems or try a different FC method?  You learn from experience and I'm sure you have taken in a nice bit of observation and other information from research to reform your method.  It can only come out better next time is all i'm saying, and i was enjoying reading your log :P
