G2G ... stalled.. contam?

So i did an open air G2G transfer. Most of the jars are near full colonization but a couple havent done anything. No obvious signs of contam or smell. Could it be dry grains or possible contam?

Did you check your grains before loading them in the jars? Also man how do you shake those things?

What do you mean by checking the grain? 8 or so of the jars are colonizing fine... the other 4 seem to not be doing much

Usually if they stall like that it's from bacteria. I would give them some more time though to see if they have actually stalled or are just taking longer to recover from the transfer since they don't look contaminated.

If you do the soak and simmer, you should check your grains by scooping some out and squeezing a grain between your fingers. If it mushes then your good if it's still hard as a rock then let them simmer longer. Or you can just wait until some grains start popping.
Do you notice any wet spots? If you see nothing growing contaminate or mycelium, bacillus is the only bacterial contaminate that comes to mind that would fit the description and cause this.

It is possible that the grains may be to dry. I did a soak with gypsum and I simmered them... then put them in pans to drain for a while (damn im burnt out but i think they sat out for a day). Then i jarred them up. Maybe the ones that arent growing were the top grains and the ones that are fine were the bottom grains? I did 10lbs of wbs at the same time... ended up with 5 lbs to much so i had to toss that.

I dont think it is a contam... I guess they didnt stall but rather never started after the G2G. But thats odd because the other jars are rapidly colonizing.

I doubt they're that dry just judging by the size of the grains.

i shook all the jars today. I noticed the jars that were healthy had grain sticking to the jar... and the few jars that were not colonizing didn't have any grains sticking to the glass. Im refering to moisture content here. I think they are just to dry to do anything. At least I hope thats the deal!!!! I guess there is only one way to find out!

Too dry is my best guess, I would think letting them sit out for along period of time after the simmer would definitely dry some out. If you have not seen any contaminate growing or smelled any foul odor (especially after shaking) then thats the only conclusion I can come to. Maybe someone will be able to chime in and confirm this or tell you with more certainty what is wrong.

When you smell for contams do you actually open the lid up... or sniff at the hole where the tyvek is?

Sniff the whole were the filter is. You might want to lightly shake the jar and then smell, but if it's a contaminate it will stink enough you should smell it no problem.

I would say the grains are too dry then, which would make since seeing as how long they were left out.

Actually... I dont think they stalled at all! I think they just never started. The original G2G clumps are still very white and look nice but it never spread to the other grains. So maybe a lack of proper preperation of grains was my problem? It happened in 2 jars from each batch. So 4 total. But the other jars are nearly 100% fully colonized and looking excellent.

Compare the size of the grains in the stalled jars to the uncolonized grains in the colonizing jars. If it is that they are too dry the grains should be noticeably smaller.

I opened those jars up and smelled them and they smelt just like wild bird seed... so i tossed it all... just used the other 8 jars to start a large monotub.
