Cutting a bridgesii pup
    #16287556 - 05/26/12 02:06 PM (11 months, 19 days ago)

Hello, I have this big bridgesii lady with 4 children (the youngest "child" is now a good deal bigger than as shown in the pic). I'd like to propagate some, so I thought cutting out the pups and rooting them individually would be the way to go.

However, I am afraid about the cuts left on the mother. They are quite low (at ground level) so I'm afraid they will rot. Any advice on how to proceed? Any other practical advice will be welcome (tools etc.).

Thanks for any assistance you might provide!

Fuck that shit bro! haha
Thats a lovely spiney specimen.

Take it out of the pot all together. Get to the pups from underneath. When you repot the mother plant keep the soil away from the wounds and be careful when yo water it for a little while. The other option is get that paint purpose made for putting on plant wounds and put that on. I have no idea on how much that stuff costs though

I'd wait until they were about 6 inches or so.  As per tools, I usually recommend a saw.  Due to how young those pups are you could definitely get away with a straight edge kitchen knife, but trichocereus cores are amazingly woody sometimes and you dont want sit there sawing on your plant with a straight edge knife, ..not when you could just cleanly saw through it.

And don't worry about rot too much.  Just keep em dry for a week or two, they'll be fine.

How big are the pups now?? I would cut them on an angle a few inches above the ground.  A very sharp knife would cut through them easily.  The cores dont seem to get too woody until they habe to support a lot of weight.  I had a T. peruvianus that was about 5 feet tall and about 5 inches in diameter,  I had to cut it about five inches above ground due to rot and the core was about half an inch thick all the way around and was like hardwood.

The largest pup is about 6-7 inches, the other two big ones are just a little shorter (I'd say 5 in). The smallest is now 2-2.5 in. I have got no such large shears; just plain garden shears.

I wouldn't use any kind of shears to cut a cacti as I think the action of the shear would damage the flesh. Think what it would be like cutting a cucumber with them.
For pups that size you can use a sharp knife. I have a bread knife with the serrated edge which works really well for taking cuttings but when they get more woody a fine toothed pruning saw works really well.
I personally would leave the pups to grow a bit bigger before removing them.

Cheers
Got

After a bit of thinking, I went for it. I also ended up using a serrated bread knife I bought last year just for cactus surgery. There are 4 bridgesii pups and another Trichocereus/Echinopsis spp. that I can't identify. Here are some pics taken right after the fact.

The unidentified specimen is portrayed in the middle picture. Can anybody name the species? Could it be a macrogonus? If I get no answer here, I'll start a new thread with pictures of the unidentified mother.

I am confused. You had three Bridgesii pups, cut one and ended up with four Bridgesii pups and one unidentified species?

Maybe I need to brush up my arithmetic skills..

Or your reading skills!
The 4th pup is mentioned, and shown in the first pic in the first post.

Alright, saw three in the picture you are right there, but I do not understand where the unidentified one comes in.

I've got one bridgesii with 4 pups, and another pupping bridgesii too. The smallest pup appearing in the first post of this thread has been growing a fair bit, but it's still too small, so I've left it alone. The unidentified pup comes from an unidentified mother not depicted here.

I treated the cuts on the mother with the same sulphur powder that helped a lot with the cracked loph here.

I've left the cut ends on the pups alone to cure without any treatment, in case the anti-fungal sulphur should interfere with rooting.

serated kitchen knife (not a bread knife) always works best for me

they look good

the unidentified cutting looks like pilocereus, but someone else should chime in

Your unidentified cutting is Stetsonia coryne.

I also wanted to point out that you should never use "clipping" tools on your cacti. A very, very sharp stainless steel 10 inch chefs knife is your best bet for taking cuttings or harvesting pieces for Chimora. Clipping tools crush the flesh of the cactus, where knives slice cleanly through the flesh. Also, make sure that you sterilize your cutting tools before you cut, with either heat or methylated spirits.

I'll continue using this thread to update on the cuttings' growth. The ID request has been moved elsewhere - with many more pics.
