Using radiant insulation to keep terrarium cooler??
    #16285046 - 05/25/12 10:03 PM (1 year, 24 days ago)

Hey all!(: I have a slight problem.. The area which my fc will be in is a bit too hot for the shrooms.. (85+f) and I'm looking for a way to keep my terrarium cooler.. I was wondering if radiant insulation with some ice would work maybe?

Any advise or other ideas on keeping it cooler would be great!!
Thanks!!

Natural heat? Like, it's just warm where you are? Or what?

I see people say freeze a bunch of water bottles and put a couple in your fruiting chamber but that will keep you very busy I suspect

That could very well work, but it will likely require considerable maintenance and much monitoring/tweaking.  Getting the temps where you want them and stable may be a bit of a challenge.

People worry about the wrong things sometimes.

Are these in an attic so nobody finds them?

P cubensis will fruit normally in temperatures which would cause problems during colonization.  Many growers have been successful fruiting in temperatures of 90F.  If it gets much higher than that, you might want to invest in a small AC unit.

@Doc haha you nailed it ^.^ had everything set up in a perfectly temped room but the items I had out to rose some suspicion so I wanna play it safe :s

And thank you RR(: I've heard this before but I was just worried about if these tempuratures would be fit for pinning as well as fruiting? That's what I couldn't precisely find 3:

Attics are not suitable.  Stick it under the house or on the back porch in the shade, etc., but not an attic.  They get up over 100F on a 70F day.  On an 80F day, the attic will be 120F or more.

I will post one caveat to RR's post. I've made it through my first flush in the attic, in central Texas. Ambient temps were recorded well in excess of 100F. *BUT* (and it's a big one), I've setup a controlled environment in a large box with cool air being piped in, while taking the FC out at night for some light and good FAE. I've been diligent, and a little clever about it, so I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. Yields were probably less than optimal, but circumstances dictate strategy. Look at some of my other posts for some pics. My very first pick was over 20g wet. I'd say I totaled about 50g wet from two cakes on my first flush.

But yes, stick to the teks and optimal conditions if at all possible.

Better option than cubes in the attic might be sclerotia under the bed.
There's a sclerotia FAQ, you can search for it. Best option: Don't grow where you can't control the situation.
