I'm pretty sure it was a poppy as there were a few of them that had already flowered. And yes, there was quite a bit of latex that exuded from the broken part that soon turned brown after it dried. Does this automatically mean it contains opiate alkaloids or...?

and yes, i tore open the one in the OP and sure enough there was a huge bright pink flower bunched up in there. but as for the pods in the second pic there are just seed "compartments" so to speak (no flower).

No that isn't somniferum. I *think* that is Papaver orientale. Which would be inactive.

It's Papaver orientale. It contains thebaine, which can be very toxic. Its effects can be described as having,

stimulatory rather than depressant effects, causing convulsions similar to strychnine poisoning at higher doses.
Unless you have extensive experience in organic chemistry, this plant is of no use to you. Please don't die.

Yea I knew it was P. orientale. The easiest way for you to get P. somniferum pods is to just grow your own from seeds. It's literally so easy, you don't have to do anything, just chuck the seeds on the dirt and they'll grow when they're ready. Plus you can get seeds anywhere too, heaps of places online, even in local stores.
