Hey shroomery
Long ago, when I was in highschool still I attempted my first mushroom grow. Got syringes from a shady site, got sorta lazy with my sterilization, got totally in the dirt for incubation, got 100% contaminated cakes, got over mycology for a while...
Fast forward to last year, I helped my friend make cakes and inoculate them at his house and he had some very big flushes. He is doing it again so I had him order me a couple syringes..
So this is really my first time being serious and flying solo..
Starting out with a simply PF-tek style grow..
Substrate is the standard BRF, verm, only I used ~75/25 ratio mix of water/coffee.. While I doubled the PF-tek recipe for 5 jars, I only got 9 jars worth of mix. I did have to use the tall jelly jars, as I couldnt find any wide-mouths (nbd really, I'll just have to wait a little longer on them)
Dont have a PC, so I steamed them for 90 min.
I did all this yesterday morning (5/22)
This morning, I lysol wiped down my entire closet, and the inside of a rubbermade tub. I set all the jars in the tub and inoculated them. My 10cc syringe was overfilled a little, maybe had 11cc in it, so I put just over 1/4cc in each inoculation point. About 1.1-1.25cc per jar.
I did not put tape over the inoculation holes. I just left them open and will rely on the dry verm layer and my (now much better) sterilization skills.
The spores I'm using are called Thai Tanic, which is what my friend grew the last time around and were really great. I hope to get some good pictures. I also got a syringe of spores called Banana Pine which is some sort of ecuadorian cube iirc. I hope to do a nice bulk grow with that, but I want to build a sweet FC first.
So now I have my jars in a clean 5gal bucket with the lid on it. The bucket drops down into another 5gal bucket that I put a small water heater in and a few inches of water. Provided everything works well, it will keep the water a steady 80*F which will mean the inside of the jars will be just a little bit warmer..
So thats where I'm at now, I'll be posting pics as I go, and asking questions as they arise..

This is where I will update the continued progress, so you can see it all laid out easily..
I started noticing growth on Day 4, not enough to justify a picture though. But then,
DAY 5:
DAY 9:
Built my SGFC
DAY 17:
They were colonized fulley on days 19 and 20.. All jars colonized fast and evenly.
DAY 23:
Theyve started pinning in the jars.
Day 25: dunked for 20hrs..
DAY 26:
Didnt want to over-crowd my SGFC so I put one cake in a hastily made 2L FC
DAY 28 (48hrs in FC)
DAY 30 (morning, 84hrs in FC)
This will probably be the first one to fully mature
And a weird siamese-twin type mutant. 2 separate stems and caps, grown totally together.
And wouldnt you know it, several hours later it was..
I think theyre drooping because of too little light, so I installed a 40w cfl above the fc.
DAY 31: My first trip..

You don't want your jars to be over 80f, its too warm. ideally you don't want them over 75f. I don't know whats going on with the incubator popularity this season, but its getting out of hand. They are useless unless you reside in an unheated house in Alaska.

Alrighty then, I may have killed mine, no growth for a week now.
I was not having much growth at all so dropped them in my box brought temp to 82F and they started taking off! Now as I mentioned, no growth for over a week:-{

Hey Dawg, I am attempting first grow, I'll bring temp back down into the seventies and wait, BUT, have you or anyone else seen a recovery from a high temp? And by the way, Spring time in Alska is BA!

The high temps wouldn't have hurt the spores, you need to be up over 100 to do that. The higher temps just seem to slow down colonization, and they also promote bacterial growth. It was more than likely coincidental that your spores germinated about the same time you brought the temp up. Some spores can take off in 3 days, while others can take up to two weeks.

Interesting, I keep reading that temps between 80-85*F will cause faster colonization as long as you dont lose too much moisture, or add more later..
Ive been watching the themometer in my closet over the past couple weeks and my closet stays a solid 75*F. Its creepy really because we havent even started using the AC yet. I just have all the windows open, but if its 60* out or if its 80* out, my closet just stays at 75*.
So I sould just turn my little heater off?? But, it came out working and looking so well...  Hmm, so much for innovation, I could have just wasted that time with video games..

Ok I unplugged my little heater.
Now I left the lid on the bucket (dont want to put TOO much faith in 1/2" of vermiculite) but now I have another quick question..
My bucket is running 74% humidity (I assume this will rise)
My closet runs 55% humidity.
Which is a better environment?
If I take the lid off the humidity would equalize..
I can keep wiping the closet down from time to time..
I think I may try a monotub with the next batch..

I honestly don't see there being a lot of difference between 75 and 80 degrees, but you have to remember the colonizing substrate will produce a small amount of heat on its own, so if starting at 80, you may end up with 85 inside the jar. Which some think is fine, and it very well may be. Though i fell like 85 is just a little on the warm side, I think a total of 80 would be the healthiest. Of course, I'm no PF tek expert, I've only got small amounts of experience with this method. The majority of my experience is with bulk and tubs.
You can keep them in the bucket if you like, at this point the RH isn't too important as the jars are working off of their own moisture supply, and it stays fairly well contained by the dry verm layer on top. And while I'm on the topic of the vermiculite.. So long as you're careful about moving the jars around and take care not to let that layer of verm shift around too much, it is actually really effective at keeping out contaminants.
On the subject of trying mono-tubs, I can only say good things about them, they may take a little more work, and a little more time, but the results speak for themselves. I can't see myself using any other method.

Yeah, I was keeping them at 80* figuring they would make a little more heat themselves...
I kinda wanted to try the monotub this time around, but dont have any tubs with a clear lid..
I guess I'll leave the lid on to help keep the air still ( as I go in and out of this closet a couple times a day. I only have 2 places on the lid popped down so it kinda arches in the middle to leave 2 little gaps for air though to help vent out co2, I thought about putting a small airpump on top of the bucket and running its hose inside to the bottom to put in fresh o2.
Maybe I'm overthinking this for it being pretty much still day 1..

If you have tubs that aren't clear you can always take the tub without a lid and cover with saran wrap, and then cut a good sized section out of the lid before placing it over the saran wrap.

I peeked today..
I looked at 3 jars, and saw the very cloudy begginings of mycelium...
Now I'm excited..
Its very faint so I wont bother snapping pics just yet as I dont think they would be any good, but hopefully tomorrow it will have more visible signs of growth..
So thats just less than 4 days after inoculation..
We'll see if the coffee helps the growth any.

That's a really good sign if you have growth after just 4 days. This is usually the expected time to see growth so you're doing well so far.
Keep us posted and I can't wait to see your first flush.

Thanks guys, I appreciate everyone being positive so far..
Now I have what might be a problem..
Its summer, so the house is getting its yearly flush of ants..
They actually are coming out from under the baseboard in my closet. Theyve come out of there before but not for the past 2 years since Ive been careful not to eat in that room. But I did move my xbox and computer in there and supposedly they are attracted to electrical currents.. Now I dont want to spray poison near my jars, and I dont want to put out those ant traps, as they generally just attract more ants..
I poured a bunch of borax down, but even still a few of them are making it past and into my room.
Will they eat my mushrooms when I start fruiting?
Any safe way to irritate them without harming my mushies??
I'm just vacuuming them up every day.
Hopefully theyll be gone by the time I start fruiting

heh yeah thanks..
I was mainly wondering if people ever had problems with ants eating their fruits.. I wonder if they would even be attracted to them (but not willing to find out)
The borax seems to work pretty well (dehydrates them to death as they walk across it) so I just made a 'wall' of it around the edge of the closet, and theyve already cut down. Plus I use it for laundry sometimes, or if I spill something on a rug.
I will definitely take some pics in the next few days. I checked again an hour ago, and all 9 jars have the cloudy starts of mycelium, and the ones I had checked this morning had made a noticeable improvement..
I just gotta resist the temptation to handle my jars every hour haha.

I know that feeling man, when I was new I was always playing with my jars lol.
As far as them going for your fruits I don't think it would be any sort of substantial problem. If you're trying to stop them at the source and have your FC elevated and somewhere hard for them to get to I wouldn't expect you to get even a few ants in there.
Smoke a bowl and chill out homeslice, it's all going to be gravy.

So I inoculated at noon on the 23rd, these pics were taken at noon on the 28th
So we'll call it

This is just a random jar that I grabbed. I assume some have more growth and some have less, but I just picked one and snapped a pic
It seems to be going faster than when I did it with my friend.
Last time we left tape over the holes and used just water.
So it seems the water/coffee mix and the better gas exchange from leaving the tape off is really helping..

Good looking growth, when I was on top of my game doing Pf Tek I had my 1/2 pints colonized 100% in an average of 9 days after inoculation. You're on the same track right now to be done in 10-12 days maybe.
