and low and behold my first Amanitas of the year!

Found in a park in Eastern Victoria, Australia.
I'm no mycologist by any means but looks like Amanita Muscaria from what I can gather.
Please correct me If I am wrong...
Three specimens but I took a few pics to get used to the camera as I am no expert photographer either.
Feedback or any criticism on pics would be appreciated too...

Hey mate, I found very similar looking ones in SA, and they are apparently Amanita xanthocephala. Is there a ring under the cap? Apparently that's a good way to tell. But I'm very new to this myself so I could be wrong, just trying to help out!
I'm hoping to find some muscaria in SA this season!

They are not A. xanthocephala. That mushroom is smaller, more orange, and has no ring on the stem among other differences.

Instead of potentially spreading any more misinformation, and to forestall others from doing the same, I point everyone to this thread by HerbBaker now. It is rather lengthy, but all of the information is there.

Yeah that's great information. "ancient tribal taboos are more potent than supposedly sophisticated modern academics realise..." suppose it spooked me too. Definitely going to have to try them at some point, thanks for pointing that thread out

i guess since its a mountainous specimen its more short and blunt ? the young ones here at low elevations have very long stips already at that point.quite a variable species. did it have a striated margin ?
nice find.

Psylo, in truth I mistook it for a bolete; it was still underground and was barely pushing up the duff when I liberated it. So it might've gotten much leggier undisturbed.

Nice find Winters. Are you gonna do any microscopy?
Yeh, I did more microscopy than usual, I'm not at home so I can't upload the picture here, but they are in this obs http://mushroomobserver.org/95678?q=HG7j
One neat thing I learned from this Amanita is that spores on a mushroom mature first near the attachment to the stem (makes sense now in hindsight but I just never realized) so that is maybe a better place to get a section from instead of the edge where I usually had been getting it.

Interesting, do you know of any examples of gilled mushrooms that produce mature spores at the margin before the the area near the base?

I think Coprinopsis comatus and some other inky caps do that...The outside edge deliquesces, the edge of the cap curls and brings the other spores in position to be ejected.

It really made my hunt, was so excited when I saw it. I normally only ever find all white Amanita, I don't even find A. muscaria very often.
It's in a spot I will be able to find over and over again too.

Hey guys! My Amanita finds for this year:
Destroying Angel / A. bisporigera

False Death Cap / Amanita citrina Couldn't get the cap color to show up well. It's actually a soft green.

Raspberry Limbed Lepidella / Amanita mutabilis I've read these are uncommon, but there's a nice little patch in my sister's yard

Here are some not from 2012 (most from last autumn), but Amanitas all the same. I hope you don't mind if I share them too! -
Blushers / Amanita rubescens

Loaded Lepidella / Amanita onusta

Amanita gemmata group (possibly Amanita praecox Lamoureaux)

Fly Agaric / Amanita muscaria var. persicina

Amanita sect. lepidella

Yellow Patches / Amanita flavoconia

-------------------- <3

These two look really similar, but they are pretty different:
1. Amanita sect. Lepidella

and
2. Amanita sect. Lepidella

Thanks! They really looked so similar to me but then I realized the veil was different, one is all cottony and powdery and the other one is a fancy ruffled skirt.
