The Melbourne Magistrates Court has heard a drug-addicted anaesthetist infected 56 patients with hepatitis C by contaminating syringes.
James Peters, 62, is accused of infecting the women while working at a day surgery in Croydon and is facing 168 charges.
A pre-trial hearing has heard Peters was diagnosed with the hepatitis C virus in 1997 and became hopelessly addicted to the pain medication fentanyl.
The prosecution said it was the restricted access to the drug that ironically led to him infecting patients.
It is alleged the doctor would surreptitiously use pre-filled syringes intended for patients.
The court heard he would turn his back to staff, inject himself and then use the contaminated needle to administer the pain relief.
The court also heard the Medical Practitioners Board was informed about this addiction to the pain medication.
The court was told a Department of Human Services investigation failed to find out how the doctor was linked to the cases, despite one consultant knowing of his drug addiction.

The MPB knew he was addicted and continued to allow him free access to pain meds?! WTF?!

It's usually a policy to get people to come forward and receive treatment without fear of losing their jobs. My cousin is a pharmacist and his hospital has this policy.

Seems like a situation where you should lose your job honestly. I'm all for helping addicts but doctors need to be held to the highest of high standards. Probably the only job (other than cops) that need to be held to this standard for this exact reason. Fifty-six people's lives are much much worse because nobody told this guy he couldn't be near narcotics

I use to work in the medical field and its a jungle. Everyone wanting help but shows no compassion to the person who just helped them. Some do and some don't. And people "expect" that the doctors, nurses, and Pharmacists can just sleep on it and handle it. Some days they need some love and respect too and if not, they turn to something else that is bad like doing something "stupid" like this.
He should lose his job, he should seek some help. Hopefully he can become a successful working part of society again but its hard for people to believe once you done something like this.

What exactly was he doing here? Injecting half the syringe into himself then the rest into the patient? Because if he'd used a new pre-filled syringe for the the patient, they wouldn't get infected.

Yeah, the dosages drawn are recorded and accounted for. You can't lose a mL of IV fentanyl solution. The other really bad part about this shit is the fact that this asshole documented "X" dose for a person, they didn't get the pain medication, and in recovery they may experience pain, get a higher dose of an opioid since they're in pain and "X" amount didn't work. Infecting these people though... Why wouldn't he have a line running somewhere, already in a vein, that he could push into(did he? did I miss that?)?
There was a thread a few months ago about this very subject, and anesthetists were the highest in addiction.
