Do any of my fellow Shroomerites indulge in reading non-fiction for pleasure and/or enrichment?

I've always been a reader. But- with a few exceptions- I have, for as long as I can remember, had a distaste for reading fiction. To me, the most I could get out of reading fiction was enjoyment and abstract sorts of lessons based on my subjective interpretation of the story and how it would hypothetically relate to my life, given the difference between the world I am reading about and the world I live in.
Reading about linguistic anthropology, archaeology, world history, or ethical philosophy gives me more of a thrill than reading about the accomplishments of some made up character.

I really dig eastern philosophy books. I'm reading "Think on These Things" by Krishamurti right now.
I can only read(and enjoy) non-fiction if it relates to my life somehow. Which usually means I end up reading self-improvement type books

Great additions.
I'd recommend The People's History of the United States by Zimmer. Great book that sheds light on some pages that were apparently stuck together in your public school textbooks.

Should I check this out? I am really interested in linguistic anthropology. I think our ability to represent actions using symbols is the key to our domination on the planet, and I think our tendency to subsequently represent so-called "entities" or "bodies" is responsible for the kinds of atypical behaviors (in the context of all behaviors) you see on our planet, like prisons, and peace rallies, and large-scale slaughter.

I actually am very nearly finished with this nonfiction book:

its a funny coincidence that this thread was made when it was, because since i started this book i've been thinking about the exact same question...I know that a lot of people dislike history but it's always been a passion of mine, but i've gotten some very weird responses/looks when someone asks what i'm reading and i explain it's just a straightforward history of the spanish civil war. why is it so strange to read about real things as opposed to novels/stories?

Just off the top of my head:

They're all fairly easy reads, I get bored with non-fiction fairly quickly if the author doesn't do a good job of keeping me engaged. The Botany of desire gets a bit philosophical at points and is more of an essay but it's quite good. I never thought reading about potatoes would be interesting but he makes it work imo.

These are a few of the history books I read last semester. I like non-fiction as long as it's well written, sometimes it can be boring as hell.

I have been spending most of time studying/reading books on the brain and how it works. It is simply for the building of knowledge and enrichment.

Another mind-shatterer by Douglas Hofstadter:

It's a collection of articles he wrote for Scientific American in the 80s. Really scattered but all delicious.
some snapshots. and one of my copy of the tao. to this day I can't remember how it came into my possession.

i with you man. never been very interested in reading fiction (tho i've been reading some lately)..
Phaedo is great
but i have to disagree about the Tao Te Ching being a 'quick read'. it's very deep, and you can find different meaning hidden in each poem each time you read.
someone posted Be Here Now. it's a great book also, but you can't take it literally, imo.
my favorite books, by far, are Castaneda's first four. i take it as fiction but the message is very rich and deep.
but mainly philosophy, psychology, social sciences books and also biographies.
have you heard about this (Shelfari) website?
