brf substrate turning grey
    #16257096 - 05/20/12 08:50 AM (1 year, 2 days ago)

Ive been using the pf-tek with brf and vermiculite, its been 10 days since i inoculated my jars...
this one waz the last one to be inoculated and got very little spore water...how ever do u see the dark area on the brf...is that normal or is it some kind of contamination? all my jars got that grey on the brf but the mycelium is growing over it..

Looks contaminated. the white stuff is what you want.
Next time inject your sore solution all down the side, not just at the top.
And a broader, shorter glass will work better than a tall one. I guess you aren't in the US?

If it turns grey around the inoculation points you probably have a contaminated syringe.

Next time, leave one jar unshot. If it turns grey, your sterilization isn''t working.
If that jar stays good and the ones you inoculate turn bad, it's a bad syringe.

Prints are better than syringes for sure, you can make 100 syringes from one print.
And start looking around for a pressure cooker. Canning is a US hobby, but there are pressure cookers worldwide.
Agar work is cheaper and easier than it looks, but you need a pressure cooker.

yeah for sure...i tried out of spore prints this time as well..its my first attempt ever to grow shrooms....but tried to sterilize with just the lid on for 90 minutes...but i made the spore water sterilization different...at least the cup i used to blend spores with water..so its probably the reason for  contamination..but still i need a pc  for sure...i would prefer a syringe over a print just because its easy for my first grow but i defiantly learn more by doing it all from scratch...but i have learned alot just using this forum...and i can assure u that i will post here again...next time with a better result i hope  and thanks again

Go easy on the spores, a tiny flake is all you need in a syringe.
