Let's just say you know there have been bears and coyotes in the area, and the possibility of wolves, bobcats and mountain lions exist.
Would you feel safe walking there alone throughout the day? And are there any weapons you would bring with you wether knife, gun or bearspray, etc...?

id bring bear spray , no doubt. shit is expensive but man i couldnt imagine being tracked down by a hungry bear. i always bring a knife into the woods. the thought of mountain lions and bobcats dont scare me as a porcupine. i think these animals would be afraid of you in most cases. Wolves, wolverines, and bear i would be afraid of.

I'm more worried about deer ticks and stepping on wasps' ground nests and shit like that.
But ultimately the more pressing concerns for me would be over-exposure and dehydration...and running out of cigarettes.
I ain't afraid of no bears or lions, and definitely could care less about coyotes.

I always bring a machete and a knife.
With those i feel safe but i have never encountered a bear or wolves.
Zens got a great point with self preservation first.
Because letting fear take your thoughts away from the present moment seems exhausting.
But if someone encounters something that can harm them then its up to basic instinct at that point.
Might be able to deter a bear with a machete

I've never had to worry about coyotes once in my life... And have actually roused them into song on many occasions. Coyotes won't fuck with you, unless maybe you are dying or dead on the ground.
As for Cougar and Bear, I do not worry but always have some sort of weapon, usually a knife, hatchet or machete. I don't carry them out of my bag unless it is night time or need them in the moment though...
It would probably be wise for me to buy bear spray, but naaah. Recently I carried my girlfriend's mom's lugar while climbing a mountain alone in a area with a fuck ton of mountain lions... I think people are way fucking more paranoid than they need to be about these animals...

I definitely worry about other humans more than other animals. People can be.crazy creatures. See mcshroomin420's story in the other outdoor thread about weird/scary encounters.

Yeah, I just spent my first two nights alone in the woods a couple of days ago. I didn't get much sleep, I was worried about a sociopathic murder stumbling into my camp to come kill me. I really shouldn't have read that creepiest wilderness stories thread. That first night was just chalked full of anxiety. The second night I was able to settle down though.

Depends.
If you mean breaking trail and just hiking off into the woods then I would want a buddy or at least a weapon and probably a backpack with some supplies.
If you mean hiking along a trail then I'd do it alone but I'd still want a backpack and some supplies. You never know when you might need a one person safety meeting in the woods.

When a bear actually charges me, then I'll be scared.
But until then bears are the furthest thing from my mind when I'm in the woods.
Grizzlies in remote Canada, Rockies, Alaska, etc. are a slightly different story, I guess.
But my only encounters have been with black bears, and they always run from me.
One time in a clear cut I accidentally flushed out a black bear cub, and I watched him and his mama retreat into the thickets (while simultaneously backing away, myself).
Cougars at least have the good graces to cause instant death via neck snapping sneak attacks.
So I put it out of mind since most likely if a cougar kills me I won't even know about it, I'll just be dead. But whatever... lottery/lightning strike odds.
And someone mentioned coyotes?

Yes, I agree with ticks. Fuck those things. They serve no purpose in the world, except to suck your blood. Like where the fuck did they come from?
Anyway, my backyard is literally a mountain, and all the woods in my area only have black bears, which ain't shit. You basically look at them and they run off. Loads of deer, etc. Nothing to really be afraid of in my neck of the woods (Northern NJ).
There ARE, however, Bob cats by my house. Which I am not looking to encounter. At all. Because they will fuck you up properly and have no qualms about it. We've got coyotes as well, but they really don't mess with you, except at night when I'm trying to sleep with the window open... red foxes too. Been seeing much more of them lately!

But to answer the question, Yes, totally safe. Camping out I sometimes get a bit nervous though.

Yes, i feel safe walking into the woods alone - I've done it a fair bit throughout my life.
I spooked a black bear cub once and got charged and chased down a mountain by a big angry mother bear. It was terrifying and i was defenseless. I've written about it somewhere on these forums...
Coyotes are nothing to fear for a grown man in almost all cases, and cougars are anyones guess. There's many cases of people fighting cougars off... I wouldn't let their prescence discourage me from being in the woods.
I have only camped out solo once - and it was sort of nerve wracking. I don't know why, but it is.... I would like to become comfortable with it though.

Grizzlies... yes.. be afraid. In grizzly territory, probably not a bad idea to carry bear mace and a gun.
Grizzlies can be aggressive and will bite your head off.
In nothing but black bear territory? I've run across tons of black bears while backpacking, they usually haul ass in the other direction the second they catch wind of you.
You generally just need to be more aware of them breaking in your camp and stealing all your food.
They are more passive and scared of humans than we are of them, unless you get between them and their cub.
Grizzlies and Polar Bears.. not so much.

Better a bear than a big cat
Mtn lions are the scariest animal in the US by far.
I've seen multiple bears, once a group of ten of us were between the mother an the cub. Split them by walking up the road. Both were in Utah and had brown fur, pretty sure they were black bears tho. Def not grizzles. But defnately not all that scary. Loud and obnoxious.
You'd see mountain lion shit and tracks but never them. I guarantee I had been stalked more than once by those god damned cats.
Just taking a piss, then WHAM 400 pound cat jumps on your fucking head.
Fuck that noise.

I wouldn't want to get too close to a moose either, which reside in the remote regions with the grizzlies, along with the last of the wolves.
Shit, I don't really even want to be alone in any remote, alpine wilderness for very long if I can help it.
But even then you've got 99 other things to worry about besides animal attacks.
Better bring a jacket and some matches and get busy.
Africa would be a little crazy.
There are some menacing beasts in those woods.
I would feel safer if I was strapped. And in a well-built vehicle. lol
