Is it true that tying the stem in a knot is an accurate ID?
This is the only species you can do that with?

You make it all possible. Doesn't it feel good?

no, there are plenty of others that have a tough stem you can tie in a knot, but it is helpful to differentiate between marasmius and others that look similar, in the grass (habitat) OP's are picture perfect M. Oreades (the ones I've seen)
1. growing in the grass
2. brownish-reddish young caps, look slightly gelatinous
3. broadly umbonate with an upraised margin in age
4. whiteish attached lamallae
5. nice smooth stem, whitish at the apex, tannish/reddish toward the base
