A former jail guard accused of trafficking drugs at the Regina Correctional Centre delivered at least 30 packages containing drugs and paraphernalia, a trial has heard.
Brent Miles Taylor, 50, is on trial before a Queen's Bench judge and jury for trafficking, possession for the purpose of trafficking, conspiracy and other offences —15 counts in total.
The drugs allegedly include cocaine, marijuana, morphine, cannabis resin and the prescription painkiller hydromorphone (Dilaudid).
In his opening statement to the jury on Wednesday, Crown prosecutor Doug Curliss laid out the prosecution's case.
The Crown alleges Taylor brought between 30 and 40 tobacco pouches filled with contraband into the jail from January 2007 to late 2009.
The contents varied, but at different times the pouches contained tobacco, drugs, lighters, rolling papers and needles.
Two women gave him the packages and for each delivery he would get paid — $100 at first, later rising to $500.
Taylor, a correctional worker since 1987, would deliver them to one or two inmates who were friends of the women, the Crown alleges.
Court heard the police investigation began in September, 2009. A wiretap was put on a phone at the women's house. Police also put a tracking device on Taylor's truck and found it was at the women's address twice that month.
The Crown is expecting to call four witnesses, including the director of the jail, an RCMP officer and two women who allegedly supplied drugs and money to Taylor.
Underground economy, jail director says
The first witness for the Crown's case, Brad Magnussen, the director of the Regina Provincial Correction Centre, testified that there is "an underground economy because of value and demand for contraband."
Magnussen, who has been director at the jail since 2009, added "it [contraband] is a constant problem for us."
He also told the jury that guards are not subjected to searches at the jail, although they could be.
He added he could not recall a guard ever being searched. He has worked at the facility since 1977.
