A former radiology technician has admitted to infecting patients at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida with hepatitis C -- one of them fatally.
Steven Beumel, 48, plead guilty to 10 crimes Friday, including tampering with a consumer product resulting in death and stealing the painkiller Fentanyl.
Between 2006 to 2008, the technician would steal syringes full of pain killers, shoot them up and refill them with saline, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. In doing so, Beumel, who is infected with hepatitis C, spread the disease to patients.
Beumel's lawyer said last year that the technician didn't know he had hepatitis at the time he was tampering syringes, the Florida Times-Union reported. The former Mayo employee acknowledged to detectives that he was addicted to Fentanyl, according to an arrest report.
It took epidemiologists more than three years to solve the outbreak, and thousands of patients who were potentially at risk were tested.
Two of those tested had been infected. One of them later died from complications related to hepatitis C.
When the outbreak was linked to Beumel in August 2010, the Mayo Clinic fired him and reported him to the authorities.
Beumel was arrested by FBI agents on May 42, 2011.
He faces a maximum penalty of life in federal prison.

That's fucked up. My dad went there to see if they could diagnose whatever his neurological issue is. It was a no go, they had no idea what the cause of his neuropathy is.

sad day on may 42nd for that guy. it makes me wonder though, i've been in pain before in the ER and gotten dilaudid that didn't help at all, makes me wonder if it was saline, if it weren't for the fact saline has a distinct taste.

What a dickhead
-------------------- Where am I at?

In a free society, the presumption must be that people can smoke, snort, eat or inject whatever they wish, so long as they do not harm others. The burden of proof should rest on those who would ban marijuana, not those who want it legal. That burden has never been met.

Truth, that guy was a dick head. Question is why did he become addicted. It makes you wonder he gets paid a shit ton of money why didn't he just buy his drugs off the streets. Here's my beef, if you want to do drugs and hurt yourself fine. Its a personal choice, but if your personal choice has a chance to hurt others (you have to be the one who judges that) then iono maybe you shouldn't be in the medical field that is trying to help people. Maybe you should go see a doctor to get high on your own time. I know for a fact, that the medical field is hard. I used to work in a hospital and shit gets though emotionally and etc. That's why I took myself out. I didn't wait to get arrested for being negligent. No one thinks anymore, its just about me, me, me. I swear he should of just done some shrooms instead, that might of kicked his addiction. Thing is more money/resources to be wasted on dumb people like this guy and gives the higher ups more resources to enforce more regulations.

What a dipshit. Even if he didn't know at the time he is still a greasebag and responsible for a death. Deserves a long sentence for sure.

Fucked up but that's the disease of addiction. I know, all too well, the desperation that man felt as he tried to get a fix.
