Corn to Bulk problem, can anyone help identify? (pics added)

I am having problems with my first bulk grow.
Before I invested in a pressure cooker i tried sterilizing half pint corn in jars simply by boiling them in water for 90 minutes. Before this the corn was left to soak for 24 hours and then boiled for 45 minutes and rinsed in cold water then left to drain overnight. ---> "sterilized" in boil.
After full colonization + one week roughly 15 jars were down to 10 that never contaminated. These were then used as spawn in coir/verm/gypsum/coffee bulk. A ratio of 10:10:1:1 was used. As a side note the coffee was mixed fresh straight into the pillowcase of would-be substrate as I thought the pasteurizing process would ultimately lead to "spent" coffee?
I had prepared three monotubs with an intended substrate depth of 3.5 inches. I used rubber insulation for the lids. Otherwise the tubs were made with a classic tek of 2 and 2 holes for the long sides plus 1 and 1 for the out holes on the smaller sides (2 and 2 for one to experimet and the holes taped over.
The pillowcase was a VERY snug fit in a 13 liter kettle which I was wondering if it could be an issue as maybe the water under the bag got much hotter in the confined space? The thermometer placed in the middle of the bulk read a steady 65-70 celsius (about 150-160F) for the first tub and a bit higher for the other one, but never exceeding 175F. The later bulk was re-pasteurized after it spent 2 days in the pillowcase as I didn't know then what i know now.
Sterile procedures were followed as best i could. gloves, a plastic suit from a large black plastic bag, tubs lid gloves and bottomplastic for sub wiped down with iso, all this on a large makeshift plastic mat.
The spawn was mixed well into the bulk and one jar was laid on top.
Here is the outcome..
the tubs now,

pics of the first tub after 10 days.

close up

The second tub was spawned 6 days ago and it is showing the same signs

The corn just ballooned up into white puffy balls and nothing that looks like myco growth to me. Any ideas where i went wrong with this? Any suggestions are very welcome as I have 15 filterboxes of pf-tek's developing in the cupboard
a ps.. If anyone has any experience with filterboxes from sporewonder. Seems to me like the plastic on top covers the whole filter!

read-up quite a lot on casings and covering with bulk. Was considering doing it a bit later before fruiting. I really hope it wasn't lack of that... uuugh..

Kinda hard to tell from the pics, but they look ok to me. The spawn has to colonize the bulk substrate and will cover the surface with fuzzy mycelium. Casing is not required on P Cubes. Just mixing it in with the bulk sub is fine. Some people put a very thin layer of the bulk sub on top of the spawn/bulk mix but that is really not needed either.
Wait for the surface to get 100% fully covered then introduce fresh air exchange to start fruiting.

would a top layer of spawn possibly help prevent contam? I could be completely wrong.

I didnt think you were supposed to have uncovered grains in a bulk grow - can be a vector for contams.

well, it's been from since i last time posted on this till now and the boxes basically look the same. the corn just fluffed out into those white balls you see in the pics and the bulk sub was never colonized. dont know what when't wrong and prolly never will..
Oh well, try try again.

The corn was not sterilized. This is the reason for the failure. RR

Ok so it's beeen from since then till now. 1 month 20 days! And this is the state of the second tub witch last of the pictures above.

The myc looks healthy and smell like fresh mushies.. but come on! Is it safe to say this will never colonize 100% or should i keep waiting?
Can i just start fruiting and see what happens?

You might try putting a casing layer over it, but the reality is you could have done two grows to harvest during the last month and a half you've been waiting. You should have sterilized the grains, and you should never leave grains on top of a bulk substrate uncovered. Always at least cover the grains with 1/4" of fresh compost or manure, etc. RR

Right you are. I've had other projects alongside this one. I just let it keep colonizing because it didn't seem off to me. Anyway, Thank you for your input. ps. could it be covered with just the same bulk substrate?
