yeah, when I visited the campus me and my girlfriend just parked the car and went to the porter dorms, bought some weed and went out into porter field to talk to people and see what the area is like. We were treated very respectfully even though we introduced ourselves as out of towners, people were really nice and told us about all kinds of cool places to smoke, trip, read or play guitar.
I did a tad bit of hiking in some of the state forests behind Santa Cruz.. just beautiful.. all of it. The beaches up and down PCH 1 from Santa Cruz are superb as well.
haha, look at me preaching to the choir. you've been there, you know all this.

Horrible choice.

We lived in Salinas for about 3 years. i hope you've got some money - you're going to need it. Everything out there is expensive, except maybe weed now.

No one cares about weed here. Salinas is garbage.
Santa Cruz, Monterey, and san francisco is about 90 minutes away. Santa barbara is 5-6 hours and it's a college town with a lot of partying.
You should go north to san francisco. You'd get much more out of your trip to see SF instead of santa barbara.
It's not a trip, I am moving there because I got a job. People do care about Marijuana there otherwise there wouldn't be a thriving dispensary business. It's also a big deal me because it's medicine. It's the only thing I've found to effectively treat my insomnia plus back and knee pain. It's a goddamn miracle. I was super depressed all the time before weed and self medicated with alcohol. I love weed!
I was just saying no one cares if you smoke marijuana openly. Obviously people care about marijuana.
I live in San Francisco btw.

I kinda figured that, but I've read a bunch of things saying the cops are dicks about smoking in certain places, specially near the dispensaries. I'm just so excited about getting out of middle America! I had a guy walk into my store the other day with a full Nazi sleeve and ask me in the brotherhood, because I shave my head I guess. Seems to be the prevailing attitude around here.

Damn right. You'll be amazed how much everyone cares about their fellow human and how open people are. San Francisco is full of weirdos and I love it. I can be as odd as I want because it's who I am and I don't have to worry about some with nazi sleeves LOL.

As soon as you can get a Cali ID you get a Recommendation.
Monterey is rather expensive. Salinas is cheaper but its a ways away and is a lower class farming community from Monterey.

I would love to live in Santa Cruz, but I got a job in Monterey, I don't wanna drive an hour plus each way to get to work. I would way rather live there, the housing situation would be much better. Pacific Grove seems great, but it might be a tad pricey.

Pacific grove is reasonable for the area, but you'll soon see why the housing market over here is so expensive. It'll be crazy compared to what you are used to. There are some areas in Monterey you could afford probably. It depends what your job is, but it sounds like it pays right if you are moving to get it.

I grew up in Salinas. It's not nearly as bad as people want to make it out to be as long as you want slow and boring. It's expensive as fuck, but LESS then monterey, but still ungodly.
East side of salinas is all mexican. However, its like going to mexico with nicer people and less cartel.
Monterey and surrounding area can all be nice, if you can afford it.
Seaside has some bad parts, but some super nice parts also.
Pretty much ALL the towns there have REALLY REALLY REALLLYY specific 'rich vs poor' areas.
I moved out at 18 mostly due to work, as starting out in the tech field, even 15 years ago, was a pain with the cost of living any where near San Jose, and there just isn't shit to do there as a kid except get into trouble. Did lots of that.
Now that I'm older I'd love to move back if I could justify the cost. If only to have redwoods, beach front, desert, *,*,* all within an hour or less.

I'm gonna be moving to california soon too! heading down next week. got a job rafting on the kern. sadly, i haven't checked out most of the central coast. mostly just the stuff from paso robles area north to Oregon and LA down to san diego. I definitely want to check out Santa Barbara and the rest of the central coast. I hear its beautiful and full of kids my age!
