i have been getting small mushrooms ever sence i have moved into this new house, please look at the pics, i dont know if its the light or the water or my fresh air.. i keep a floroscent shop light on the side of the terrarium for even more light. im hoping someone can look at my mushrooms and tell me what the problem is. they are thick stems when they are pinning, and ususally mushrooms like theese grow big, but theese are opening up real early. usually when i see theese types of fat stems they grow into BIG mushrooms,,, now the caps are opening up really early,, some of the caps kinda look like "flying saucers" ufo i know some of the caps have not opened yet, but from the other cakes they will be opening very soon, and this is not what i am used to. the picture of the light with tote , the light is turned off so you can see what type of light it is , its a florosecent hanging shop light, low wattage, and i also use 2 100 watts 6500 k compact florosecents in the ceiling as lightbulbs

as far as my water goes,,, i dunk for 24 hours ,, and i mist alot,,, one thing that might have happend was i had invisible bacteria in some of my jars i had to throw away some,, but some colonized ,,, do you think thier was bacteria in the ones that colonized but the myceluim took over and im thinking it wasted alot of nutrients doing so.

im having a hard time believing this is genetic, i have even switched the sources from where my spores are from. and im still getting similiar results,,, every batch i have tried sence i have been in this house has been like this or worse... im going to put pics of my doors up,, in this bedroom i am in alot,,,i put a bed sheet over the door to keep the room more private and the other doors i put somethnig near the bottom to block anyone from trying to look in, do you think i am restricting to much fresh air from enterering the room>????? i have a window unit ac on now,,, and also i have a fan in the room going 24 hours.... i cant open a window in here thats not a option. do i need fresh air directly from outside or what ???????last time i was on here i was told by RR that its probabbly my light or water

Fans are not really a good thing with a sgfc and I think they look fine and its always hit or miss with ms . 1/4" holes 2" apart on all 6 sides .. yes you need them on the bottom too put something under it to catch the water and try not to have your fc on the floor , most people recommend 3' off the ground

A few points.
Do not bump your own threads within 24 hours. Don't make back-to-back posts only minutes apart because that's also considered bumping.
I can't count how many times I've said to leave a window cracked, but NEVER run a fan in a room with a shotgun terrarium(even though you chose not to build it properly). Your cakes have dried out, and the low moisture is part of the reason why you're getting the small fruits.
The CFL lamps on the ceiling might help you see to walk around, but they're not doing anything for the mushrooms. Be sure to turn off the shop light at night. RR

You need holes in the bottom! Follow the tek to a T. The holes in the bottom will allow for air to travel through to the top which is what creates the humidity.
IME, I've found that small fruits like that are genetic. However, I've heard RR state many times that it's caused by a lack of water. But if you're dunking properly and mist and fanning them, then my only guess is it's genetic.

RR i will clean this thread up in a few min by deleting some of my replys, i just forget to type stuff at first,,, is this shot gun terraruim? i thought a shotgun terraruim was something differnt this is perlite in a tote with holes , as far as the fan drying stuff out, i had this problem before i started using a fan in here. RR lowes sells differnt hanging shop lights then what i have now, they have ones where i can put my own cfl in it and i can hang that on the outside of my terraruim. do you think this is a light issue or water?

Try sitting your cakes on a plate or small dish capable of holding some water. Sit the cake(s) on there to soak up water while you fruit and see how that works.

man i think RR hit it nail right on the head once again,, i think theese lights are good to use , but they are WAY to far away from my terrarium. i think i need to get a CFL near the tub , i just read http://www.mushroomvideos.com/Terrarium-Tek very informative, im going to put one of theese lights near the side of the terrarium is it ok to increase the lighting in the middle of this proecss??? and also,,, i think that page said my humidity in the room by itself needs to be atleast 30 percent, this might be my problem. sounds like i need to purchase a hygrometer

Humidity in the room can be less than 30 percent, but don't run a fan. Build the terrarium per the tek. Don't waste money on a hygrometer from china. They don't work. RR

the only thing is with the fan is i had this problem before i had a fan going on in here. but i have also used a fan in a room before in the past and got good restults, and another thing, this window ac unit acts as a fan, but i HAVE to keep that on , or it would be way to hot in here. when i first moved in here, i tried to grow in teh closet and kept a cfl light near the top , couple of tubs stacked, the tub near the top acutally produced something like what im used to, and now that i think about it , i had that cfl light in thier right next to the top tub. i wonder if that was the differnce. im going to purchse some hanging shop lights today at lowes either the ones that i can hang or one i can clamp direcetly onto the outside of the terrarium. i can screw my own cfl light into theese. another thing i have been noticing is that my cakes seem like they were drying out even when i dunked for 24 hours, on alot of the cakes i would get pins near the bottom of the cake , and also the cakes felt like they lost alot of weight when i picked one up to see how much water it retained. AND ALSO lets be clear on the types of fans i have,, i am using a tiny desk fan on the ground to dry some fruits out but it is within a couple of feet of my terrarium . also the window ac unit is a fan ,, its about 2 feet from my terrarium. thoose are the 2 fans i have

That's bad.
Rather than arguing about it, I suggest moving the terrarium to a different area. You're not the first one to experience this. RR

That will be ok as long as the heat emitted from the light doesn't heat your terrarium past the desirable temperature range specific to the species you are fruiting. Also, is that cfl in the 6500K range? Mushrooms absorb most of their usable light from the sides of their fruit bodies.

I use a small 15w 2700k CFL on a goose-neck desk lamp and it seems to work fine.

Can I have a ceiling fan running on low in the same room the SGFC is at? Or should I just keep it off till the fruiting stage ends?

Don't run a fan at all, including a ceiling fan. Leave a window partly open for fresh air.
The light should be as close as possible without heating up the terrarium. Usually, two to three inches away works out fine. RR
