What Skills and Language Knowledge are Needed?
    #16206926 - 05/09/12 10:36 PM (1 year, 10 days ago)

What computer language skills are required to help maintain a site exactly like the shroomery? For instance, PHP, SQL? I'm assuming both are or something similar. Is there anything else I would need to know in order to help maintain a site like this? I'd love to be able to help out whoever ends up maintaining the site I'd like to put out there.

Any help/guidance would be deeply appreciated.

It kind of depends on if you want to specialize, or be a jack of all trades. The skills I would recommend to maintain a site like the Shroomery include:

Knowledge of PC hardware and networking
Linux server administration and security
HTML (including HTML5), CSS (including CSS3) and Javascript (including jQuery)
PHP scripting including best practices for security and how to use versioning and revision control (CVS, Subversion, Git, Mercurial, etc.)
MySQL, including its performance characteristics and how to optimize queries

For us, Link focuses on keeping the servers running and happy, and I focus on the programming part of the site. So he's more of an expert at the first two items on the list and I'm more of an expert at the last three (although there's considerable overlap). Really you can be as focused as you want; any single one of those specialties is enough to build a career around. It comes down to what you find interesting, and what you can get other people to help you with.

Thank you so much for all of this information, seriously Ythan. My personal expertise is industrial refrigeration and that involves control systems and so forth, including PLC's. I have a mechanical engineering degree and I started my own business recently because things weren't working out for me at my company when I returned to work. I was looking into Devry because I took a number of electronics courses there a while back. They offer everything you describe but they are expensive credits and the pace is much quicker then normal. I'm in contact with the local county college already, I just have to determine where I'd like to take my own involvement. I'm just looking to pick up some skills to carry my weight and not drop it on everyone else who decides to become involved.

One of my sisters friend is an educator in computer science but I honestly can't expect her to be too deeply involved although I'm sure I can rely on her to some degree. She has a very busy life. But I do have a friend who is versed in C++, PHP and a few others… He spends a lot of time with Javascript from what he said. He also mentioned he's really been getting into something called Ruby. None of us are true hard ware "experts" so to speak but I do have another friend who I'd consider an expert with all of the past and current hardware technology but I'm not too sure I'd consider him a network expert on a large scale. Isn't all of that the responsibility of whoever maintains the server anyway? I mean he does understand networking but is he an expert at it, I'd have to ask him how he would rate his skill set compared to to others out there. I invited the company I plan on hosting the server to look at this site while we were on the phone to give him an idea what I'm interested in and he was pretty impressed and was like "Hmmm! magic mushrooms!" I explained to him it was also medicinal and gourmets and there was a lot of experience hanging out here and all that is involved in all of it. For all I know you picked up a new member! It's a company called liquid web. I was pretty happy to learn the potential fee's were less then I had imagined when he looked at what you have out there.

I folderd the links and thread and will send it to everyone involved in this and see where we stand. I'm pretty excited about all of this to be completely honest with you and I'm really hoping collectively we can do this as a working group. I need to find out what the county offers and decide how far I'd like to push it as far as my personal involvement goes.

(edit) Looking good!

Thank again Ythan!

I vaguely remember that phrase from the movie hackers but couldn't put two and two together on how it was used so I relied on urban dictionary once again to help me understand where you were coming from. No, I'm not really any of those descriptions to be honest with you. I'd love to set up a site similar to this one because of the features it offers the user. The rep from the hosting company I intend to use looked at this site and was impressed himself, he basically said whoever is writing the code for this site has their act together and I agree which is why I was asking what skills we needed to pull it off. We were talking last night and there are a number of things we need to work on based on the info Ythan put out there and I'm more then willing to learn some new skills myself in all of this so that I can support my friends as well as play some real role in the site.

What did you mean by hack the gibson? do you hack the gibson in any way shape or form?

It was merely meant in jest in regards to your name, it was, is, and probably always will be one of my all time favorite movies.

Ahhh, I see, sorry for the confusion on my part. Yeah, there's a method to the madness of my handle. Cool Photo thread, I'm going to get some shots together and post to your thread.

I sent you a ticket due to your message regarding being bombarded with PM's. It looks like we have every single base covered. If I have a question we can't work out on our own I'll take you up on your offer. Thanks Ythan...
