First Time Grower here, need some experienced eyes (pics)

Alright guys, I'm new here, but I've been doing a lot of reading here in the forums over the past few months. I followed this tek (http://www.fungifun.org/English/Pftek) for the most part, taking pieces of other information I had read on these forums and around the web and using it as I've seen fit. Basically here's where I'm at: 1. Inoculated BRF jars at 4 points exactly a month ago (spore syringe), some jars are B+ and others Amazonian. 2. Birthed these 8 cakes last night, well approximately 5 hours ago 3. Dunked 1 of the cakes, but did not roll (changed my mind and decided to just let the first flush go, as I didn't want to take any noob risks). Also, have another 12 cakes I plan on birthing within the next week, and have already prepared a second FC to place on top of the first, same setup. 4. Birthed into a FC with 2/2.5 inches of damp perlite (FC has 4 1/4 holes in the bottom and top, and FAE is provided by a 7.5l aquarium pump connected to about 14-16 inches of bubble wands under the perlite). I have also and plan on misting the sides, lid, and taking a step back and misting over the cakes and fanning (I feel twice a day is sufficient considering the pump). 5. 18" fluorescent light I am running on a 12/12 cycle
That's all the info I can think of to put for now, but I'm including some pictures, and I'd like some feedback. Also the cake I have a picture of up close, there's that tough looking brown spot, which i believe to just be a very dense hard spot (somewhat shiny) which was along the edge of the jar, I don't believe it to be contams, but I'd like some feedback on that since it's still early.
Btw, this is my first attempt ever at growing, and I'm hoping for a good run, as I've invested a lot of time and money into this.

You should dunk for 24 hours after birthing before your first flush. Then roll in verm & place in your fruiting Chamber.
I'd recommend checking out www.mushroomvideos.com The entire PF tek is on there from start to finish w/ how to properly build a Shot-Gun Fruiting Chamber.
Good luck, and you've gotten through the hard part of growing.

That's a big ass tote. What size is that tote? What kind of RH are you achieving with the pearlite and bubble wands?

The air from the bubble wands will dry out the perlite quicker then usual, there is no benefit there.

That's why I asked.
OP, have you seen anything about SGFC? Shotguns let you use just the perlite and natural air circulation to achieve the best growing conditions. Try watching RogerRabbit's mushroom videos. They're the shiznit. (edit: like TL said... watch the video)

I had read somewhere that if your cakes colonize in under a month it isn't completely necessary, I didn't want to risk the contams, being new and all.

2 112qt totes. And my justification for the bubble wards, I work 6 days a week, long hours, and go to school as well, which doesn't give me a lot of time to tend to them, so I was going for the "automated approach".
Is there a way to re hydrate perlite safely?

I've read about them, but this being my first grow I'm a little off on the lingo with some things and distinguishing one thing from another.

If you build the SGFC right, it will be perfect for your situation. It's the one with all the holes...

Fully colonized cakes are extremely contam resistant.
rehydrate it just like you hydrated it initially.Quote:

QFT, doesn't get much more set & forget than a properly built Shot-Gun Fruiting Chamber (SGFC.)

So if I'm understanding this correctly, my FC is good to go, but to convert it to a shotgun FC, I just need to get a humidifier and hook it up correct?

No. A ShotGun FC has 1/4" holes on all 6 sides roughly 2" apart from one another.
Ditch the air pump.

Not correct, take your tub and drill 1/4 inch holes every 2 inches on ALL 6 sides, then fill it with 5-6 inches of moistened perlite.

holes on all 6 sixes.
and elevate it a bit more off the ground if you can, i see you already have it elevated a hair. but if there are no holes on the bottom side, there is no point in elevating it.

put it on a shelf or something at least a foot or two off the ground. that's where most contams are

There are holes in the bottom, for the CO2 to escape, from my understanding, I was aiming to get positive pressure inside the FC to keep contams out. So I need more holes? I also read that I neede 4 holes top, 4 holes bottom, to help keep the positive pressure, but to keep in the humidity with the air pump running.
http://www.shroomery.org/9136/Humidifying-FAQ
There's where I found that info, about the pressure and air pumps, I got the 8 holes thing from another source, can't remember.

Yea, a lot of the information on the front page is old/bad/out of date. Just build a proper SGFC. 4" of perlite is definitely not overkill.
Fully colonized cakes are extremely contam resistant. Just make sure to provide enough FAE & contams won't stand a chance.

Well I'm out of perlite, should I ditch the second tote, and dump the perlite from it into the first chamber? And stack cakes or something? keep in mind, I have another 12 or so cakes to fruit as well.
And will things go bad if I continue this setup?

If your current set up is working, then go with it & see how the mushrooms turn out.
4" of perlite is recommended for a SGFC.
Your current set up is one that I'm not familiar with at all.
