If you can read/concentrate comfortably, on screen text with flashing lights in the periphery of your vision, you're a better man than me gunga din.
It maybe the fact that my cave is lit by a single 11w CFL. I even find the white screen that pops up momentarily when using "cool previews" an almost eye searing experience.

Unfortunately, there isn't currently a way to hide specific avatars
It's a long thread so I'm not sure if this has already been said, but if you install the NoScript Firefox plug in ( http://noscript.net ), it gives you the option to block any repeating individual picture. Every time I see an annoying giant flashing signature, CLICK, and I never see it again.
NoScript is a good security tool to have installed anyway in case you end up on a site with malware scripts trying to hijack your browser.
