Roving mischief-making monkey leads to drug charges against owner

ASHEVILLE — The antics of a mischief-making monkey led police to charge its owner with drug offenses and sparked a health department investigation after the animal bit three people.
Authorities also planned to euthanize the monkey, a marmoset about the size of a squirrel and named Couscous, at the Buncombe County Animal Shelter late Monday or early this morning for rabies testing.
The monkey’s owner, Charles Bradley Winecoff, 40, of Upland Road in North Asheville, was charged early Monday with several drug offenses after officers found marijuana, hash, mushrooms and Ecstasy in his home as they were searching for the monkey, police Lt. Wally Welch said.
Winecoff was jailed briefly at the Buncombe County Detention Facility but was released after posting a $50,000 bond.
He could not be reached Monday.
City animal control officers were called to Winecoff’s home Sunday evening after the monkey escaped and bit three people in the nearby neighborhood before returning home, Welch said.
Officers obtained a search warrant when no one answered the door and went inside, finding the monkey — and noticing drug paraphernalia in the home, Welch said.
Winecoff returned home as officers were searching the house.
Obtaining a second search warrant to look for drugs, officers then discovered about 3 pounds of marijuana along with hashish, mushrooms and Ecstasy, Welch said.
The investigation was continuing, he said.
Because the monkey is a wild animal not allowed in the city under animal control rules, Winecoff agreed to relinquish it, Welch said.
The animal, native to South America, was placed in quarantine at the shelter. Health officials decided Monday afternoon it should be euthanized for rabies testing at a state lab in Raleigh, health department environmental services director Mark Fowler said.
“The rabies vaccine has not been demonstrated to be effective in primates,” he said.
It’s also not known what the incubation period for rabies is in monkeys, he said. The department is in close consultation with the three bite victims as the investigation continues.

Rabies vaccine not effective in primates? Humans are primates and are saved by rabies vaccine.I think the owner of this marmoset gave it drugs.

Terrible situation...and I couldn't care less about the monkey. Don't know those involved but she had the thing where she shouldn't have. Against the law in the city. It bit 3 ppl and has bitten others before. The girl who had it and others are raising hell about the poor monkey euthanized. How about the 3 ppl that are waiting on rabies test to come back? And if the vaccine won't work and they die then it's on her head. Not to mention the poor guy whose house was searched over this shit. Everyone crying and complaining about a damn monkey! 3 ppls lives may be at risk and a man is most certainly going to prison because of this. Out $50,000 bond so far...I have no sympathy for her.

i was being sarcastic. these people have every right to have the monkey tested for rabies. i sure as hell would want the little fucker tested if he bit me. my cats are a different story. they are indoor only and don't even have contact with mice. if someone got bit, then i'd do anything to keep my cat taken from me. then again, my animals are only in my personal space.
years ago on the farm, we(my ex's dog) had a collie/sheltie mix(bad idea) that snapped and bit open our neighbor's kidney area when he was approaching the front porch. this dude had been attacked by a mama bear a few years before, and had the scars to prove it. he drank some vodka and my ex stitched him up with dental floss and a sewing needle, no shit. she decided a few months later to euthanize the dog. she had bottle fed the dog as a puppy and it lived most of it's life in a dog pen because of this or that circumstance. i was hoping it could be a good porch dog...

It's cool Pass...I wasn't lashing at you dude. Had a rough day and I do know people in that area. Been reading this story a couple of days and as details emerge she is clearly at fault. Her extremely poor choices led to 3 ppl hurt who I hope will be OK. And I don"t know if she was visiting this guy that got busted or if the thing just got in his house but he is an a world of shit because of it. 3lbs of herb plus other stuff is going to hurt. The girl who owned the monkey received 3 written warnings and went home. That's my beef is everyone saying how sad it is they euthanised it
