I normally don't post most of my photos, but just for kicks, I'll be making a spring photo gallery of miscellaneous pictures. I'll update randomly as the pictures come.

It's not as cool as it seems. Out of three weeks, that was the only day it wasn't a constant downpour. Always blue sky under the tarp (makes me think of those allstate comercials about all the different PNW profiles, like the people at stop signs or the blue tarp campers )
Last one that I forgot to add

If anyone gets the chance to visit Washington and wants a local to help show them around, feel free to hit me up. I would recommend visiting the Hoh rainforest, driving over Chinook Pass, and driving over the North Cascades. If you have the ability (and are not afraid of heights) drive up to "Harts Pass" from Mazama (first town after crossing the crest heading east on Highway 20). Highest road in Washington (you can drive to about 7400') and you can check out an abandoned Cold War radar sight.
A few more.

The other side of this piece had a date stamp from 1903'. It's in just about the most rugged and hard to reach areas of the state, probably 30 miles in any direction for the nearest human being.
Looking towards Liberty Bell Mtn from Highway 20 (north cascades highway)

Been a few days, but today was time to get down to some bitness with the Bohemicas. Finally visited a patch of forest I've had my eye on for a while, and boy did it get hit good
Not too much time taking pictures, but a few videos of the adventure will go up as they come along. For now, the four pictures I did take today, and a few others from days past.

A skull I found:
Some cooking pics, so I'll let ya know what's up with each one.
Garlic, Walla Walla sweet onions, carrots, celery, chopped red chili and a little bit of lemon:
The seasonings and sauces used:
Boil noodles. when done, strain and set aside until ready for the wok:
Get your chicken ready. I just cut the meat off some extra thighs I had in the fridge:
The sauce I made for cooking the chicken:
After chicken was cooked in a hot wok with some sesame oil and the sauce. Chicken was taken out, but the sauce was left to use for the other stuff (I added some frozen peas and corn into the mix while cooking:
Walked outside and got some oysters from one of my baskets. Store fresh, ha. How about from basket to hot wok in less than 5 mins:
End product, which was topped with a bit of hot chili sauce mixed with some "golden mountain sauce" and a bit of cheese. When done with the chicken, I simply tossed the veggies into the hot wok with the remaining sauce and fried till soft, then added the oysters and noodles, heating till hot and then removing from heat:
Videos of today's adventure later on.

Nice videos.
Consider taking a hatchet with you and use it to cut into recently fallen trees so you can spray your LC in there and it will be the first thing to get to the wood.

Oh I normally do. Just gets difficult when filming, but off camera I do just that. Gotta get a go-pro so the camera is like a headlamp.

Thanks RD. Where ya been? Not quite the same without you around
Edit: A note on the hatchet thing again: I recently purchased a set of small metal hand punches, made to punch holes in sheet metal. They work perfect for making holes in dead trees, spraying them, then using the slug that came from the punch to plug the hole up. This way the wood isn't exposed where I spray, and it is less obvious of human activity. This is the basic design for an Arch punch http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004T7WD/ref=sc_pgp__m_A1E8TEI9CXEX51_12?ie=UTF8&m=A1E8TEI9CXEX51&n=&s=&v=glance

Not really sure. But I know that European forests are pretty deprived of wood compared to out here in the PNW, so I am simply spraying everything I know they rage through alder, maple, doug fir, pine, and a few others. Pretty much, they make azure and cyan mycelium look like childs play. Got one area where it's consuming plastic (not colonizing, but actually consuming. the weight has dropped by several grams over the last few weeks)

I have a video that I will put up later. Almost every log that I sprayed a few weeks ago had visible streaks where the stream hit the moss. Only on the moss tho. I thought it was slug slime at first, till I got a bit closer

It looks like the mycelium is consuming the moss. It even seemed to be eating the blackberry leafs
Video quality kinda sucks. I've been dumping A LOT in the last few days, so hopefully I'll be able to show a better example in a few weeks.
Edit: Pesticide sprayers are the shit. One gallon pump fits perfectly in the pack, along with a gallon jug for a refill. Gotta mod it out a bit so you don't get clogs, and make sure there are no large chunks in the LC. Two gallons will cover about 1/2 acre if you use sparingly.

More pictures from today I'm a bit tired, so I'm only gonna post ID's on ones I don't have to look up in a book

Ganoderma sp. growing from Red Alder. She's a little past prime.
Stemonitis fusca
Coprinellus sp.
Scutellinia scutellata
Not really sure about this one. Growing from Red Alder near a swamp. Sure is cool looking with some amazing color contrast.
The black crusty mess. Reminds me of a scorpion.

Without constant or at least steady rainfall, doesn't the lc dry up and become unviable? It's been very dry the past couple of weeks so I kind of imagined that it would bring all mycelium to a halt.

It rained half an inch at my house the other night, so it's not too dry out. The mycelium can find tons of little hiding spots to get away from the sun, so no, it won't just stop growing. It finds damp areas to thrive, or starts to penetrate a log and get away from exposed light and air.
When I spray into a mulch bed, the surface almost NEVER has visible mycelium, but you start digging after a few weeks and you will find it happily growing right below the surface. To give people an idea of how potent the LC's are, I dripped some on one of my leather slippers a few days ago, now it has white drops all over it.
Thanks for the kind words everybody. I'll keep updating as time rolls on.

I also wanted to ask about mycelium that does happen to dehydrate. Can it come back to life with rainfall afterwards in your experience (or anyone else who wants to jump in here)?

In my experience, yes it can. I had some P. cyanescens mycelium sitting in a plastic container in my closet without any water for almost 18 months. One week after bringing it back outside and allowing it to get rained on, there is visible mycelium growing off of the wood once again. This is probably not the case with every species, as some may die when they dry up, but in my experience with wood lovers, as long as the mycelium doesn't get destroyed when dry and brittle, it will still have some chance at returning to life after water is added. It worked for a two year old "blue oyster" block too. It was dried out sitting in a garbage bag for over 15 months. Pulled it out, hosed it down, and two weeks later we got fresh blue oyster pins coming from the old block. Just my

Went to visit the ovoids today. Wanna make sure I catch them at the perfect time to take prints. Was worried about them being sterile, so I popped one under the scope. The spores are just very immature. Can't get a good shot of some basidia yet, but maybe later on.

Sorry to hear your patch was all dried up. But don't fret, the rain is coming back, and the patches I have going are still pushing up fresh pins every day. I bet things are just getting started up here in WA. Thinking of a few areas I might go on an actual woodlover hunt, just like the fall Will update tomorrow.

Went today to check up on them again. A few got pushed over last night from the heavy rain, but they were ready to harvest and print anyway, so I took them home. Prints in progress (should get about 20 by this time tomorrow) and so is more microscopy.
The specimen I was looking at a few minutes ago was pretty immature, so none of the basidia actually have spores, but are still in the process of forming. It's quite interesting to look at. Some of the older ones will get cut up after they are done printing, so more pictures will follow.
Anyway, a few pictures I took from today, and some videos will be posted up later on tonight. Till then,
Ovoid microscopy: A side note, I find ovoids to smell exactly like chicken of the woods. Weird -Pleurocystidia -What I believe are immature badidia still forming spores.

i didn't bring that one home (one of the only ones I didn't take with )
The chipmunks are doing ok. We put the babies in a tub with a warm water bottle and put a ramp up to the top. Within 5 mins, the mom was inside the tub making a new nest. I think she is becoming comfortable with the tub as her new home. They have a nice heat pad with some good insulating material. The mom should feed them, but if not, it's bottle time. She has free roam to leave the tub, and easy access. They are about 3-4 weeks (eyes still closed), and should be up and active in about 10-15 days.
I'm using this as a baseline http://www.orphanedwildlifecare.com/chipmunkcare.htm. When I was about 9, we cared for a baby raccoon, until he was about 4 years old. He finally decided not to come home one day a t the river. Weighed 43 pounds, but was just as friendly as a golden retriever. We called him Bandit.

The cap was textbook Inocybe, but I was blown away when I turned it over. Bruised red. I know exactly where I set it down, and might go get it later on just to check it out under the scope. I'm getting more and more interested in Inocybe as time goes on.

What's an Inocybe?
J/k seriously though, that and Laccaria are the two genera I want to find most this year. There are so so so many mushrooms I have never seen...

I hope you go back and get it, it seams kind of interesting. The more time goes on and the with the hundreds of things that I've collected, I can't believe I have never collected a real Inocybe of my own. I want to find one more than anything else this year, it has got to happen for me this summer!

You just let me know if both of you ever come out here You guys out there got tons of stuff I have never seen, so I know how ya feel. Even living in this state for 24 years, I have barely scratched the surface of fungi in the PNW. Glad I can help people out, and maybe inspire some people to go get wet and muddy, crawling around in the woods looking for that one perfect picture

What's an Inocybe?
J/k seriously though, that and Laccaria are the two genera I want to find most this year. There are so so so many mushrooms I have never seen...
This thread is a very valuable resource for me. I learn something every time you update, Bfogg!
ditto that, and your pictures are simply stunning.

Thanks man
Well, my bathroom is being remodeled right now, so I went outside to take a piss. Looking down, I spotted a little Mycena sp. Bent down and plucked it from a pine cone, and to my surprise, blue stem
This has been in one of my dream for months, and one of my personal goals ever since I started getting serious about hunting fungi 3 years ago. The pics show it a little bit, but in person, the species is EXTREMELY BLUE!!!
Microscopy coming later on, and as many prints as possible. There were LOTS more on doug fir pine cones all over the area

Thanks Psylo. I'm in the process of some microscopy, and making up some dishes to put spores on (they are in the PC). Already got three fairly good prints on foil too. Heavy depositors, and VERY fast too. I bet I will end up with over 8 prints from this one cap.

Thanks for all the kind words everyone I've been pretty busy with tons of stuff lately, so haven't had time to do any microscopy. I'll try to get some pictures up later on before I gotta start my bonfire. I do have some interesting notes and observations from the past few days.
1- They ALWAYS grow from douglas fir pine cones that are buried in the ground, and covered in moss. Never from stuff around the cones, but either from the outside, or from where the seeds originated.
2- There is another similar species that can grow from the same cone, but mostly just very close in location, and this species does not blue (but has all of the same characteristics). I will compare this species to the one that blues.
3- Bruising fades from a blue color to a slight purple color when dry. They taste like active mushrooms when dry. The bruising takes less than 5 minutes to start showing up, and sometimes is almost immediately after being handled. There is no blue bluing before handling. After 30 mins, bruising is at it's peak and will start to diminish over time unless dried immediately. Specimens that bruised VERY blue and sat out overnight were barely blue in morning, but those that were extremely blue and then dehydrated retained the blue color.
4- Bruising is not just on the surface of stipe, but actually in the tissue, making me want to believe this species contains active compounds. Whether those chemicals are actually psilocybin, Psilocin, baeocystin, or any others is yet to be determined. I will have access to such testing equipment in the near future, so testing could become a possibility.
5- Bruising is mainly located on the lower half of the stipe, but is not bound to that location. Out of 20 specimens collected, only one had blue bruising on the gills (which sadly I couldn't capture in a photo
Here are some pics from yesterday. Been trying to make some new settings for my camera, but I think it might be making it worse. Back to the old settings. Been finding lots of different Inocybe sp. and with my new found interest for the species, I think I will begin documenting as much as possible.

Inocybes:

Not sure yet:
The bluing Mycena:
Galerina:
Right before I went inside for the night.
And more pics of chipmunks for those who wanna see them. Still have closed eyes and ears, but should open up sometime soon:

Your photos are looking pretty good, dude. The toughest thing for me with regard to macro shots with DSLRs is getting good depth of field. That is usually the thing for me that sets the good macro shoots apart from the great ones.

I finally got my camera down to a point where I am satisfied with the pictures. A few shots from the past days.
Stevens Pass:
Weird skull. Probably a deer or something:
Ovoids:
Pluteus cervinus:
Ganoderma applanatum:
Psathyrella sp.
Bluing Mycena sp. 1/4" grid lines:
Not really sure on the name. Some sort of slime mold.
Entoloma sp.
Inocybe sp.
Laccaria ap
And a few rough microscopy shots from the Mycena sp. at 800X
Basidia
Cheilocystidia:
Pleurocystidia were absent.
Spores:

Edit: Pics are messed up for some reason. Not my best day with shroomery This is actually pissing me off. Not sure why my photos say they are deleted when I just uploaded them, twice.... WTF Shroomery? Will fix the rest tomorrow, can't keep my eyes open any longer.

I feel ya winters. It's happened to me a few times when Shroomery is down
I am like 99% positive your photos in that thread are broom cells. I haven't found any other species that have them, but I know there are a few out there. Nice pics too. They kinda look like some Cheilocystidia from Mycena cyanorrhiza.
Anyway, pictures are fixed. so ONE MORE TIME, from the Psathyrella!! Don't think the one is Tubaria confragosa, gill color seems a bit off. At first I thought Galerina for some reason.
Bluing Mycena sp. Probably Mycena amicta:

And the microscopy, done at 800X. Basidium are either 3 or 4 spored, Pleurocystidia are absent, couldn't get any caulocystidia pics.
Basidia:
Cheilocystidia:
Spores:
Some weird orange slime mold:
Entoloma sp:
Inocybe sp:
The weird Laccaria/Tubaria:

Ok, and some Ovoid microscopy.
Basidia:
Cheilocystidia. Not sure what the green thing is, but it was 100% green looking at it through my eyepiece, and through my camera attachment:

Baby oyster cluster:
Agrocybe sp:
Fuligo septica:
Old dry Gymnopilus:
Coprinoid fungi. Not sure which one, but the smelled pretty bad:
Amanita pantherina:

I had one more question. If lc is used during rain season can it sometimes fruit within days or weeks of original placement? It seems most people are of the opinion that it takes several months or a year to see adult mushrooms fully arise.

It takes a long time (at least 3-4 months) for wood lovers like cyanescens, azurescens, friscosa, ovoids, bohemica, subaeruginosa, ect. Species that grow in grass like stuntzii, cyanofibrillosa, baeocystis, and others take less time. I sprayed areas with stuntzii last August and had fruits in that spot after about two months.
Panaeolus species are fast too. Conocybe species take some time, I have not had too much luck with Pluteus. Gyms are fairly fast as well, but not as fast as grass lovers.

Ok. Today is a slight milestone for me, at least in a way. This is my 3,000 post (almost all in MH&I). Over the past 3 years I have learned more than I could ever imagine, and I want to thank all of you who have helped me on the way. There have been users come and go, some pass away, and others moving up in the world, and needless to say, I am proud of many of the users on here.
During the time I have spent here on Shroomery, I've gotten to know a few of you quite well (you all know who you are). This place is almost like a second home to me, and I consider many of you good friends, even tho we have never met, and may never meet each other. None the less, I'm glad to have met all of you, and want to extend my thanks for all the help, and I'm sure some feel the same way.
Ok, now for the post. I was getting a bit bored, and had some time to kill before I had to feed the chipmunks again, so I went for a stroll in the woods near my house. The little bit of rain we had in the last few days really helped things to start popping up. There were tons of cool fungi species to drool over, and some that might make me drool later on Once again, thank you everyone for helping me out over the years, and I am looking forward to being here, helping others for years to come.

Thanks for all the kind words everybody, and for the ID's Thinker. It took some thought, but I think the piece of wood will become some sort of animal. It kinda looks like a pig already, so I might go with that. You guys are all awesome, and it's been a pleasure being here and helping out

Pluteus cervinus:
Can't remember how to spell the name right now

Thanks for the ID help guys.
"Trichaptum biforme"- could be another Trichaptum, conifer/hardwood? -Conifer, Douglas Fir. That was the only thing I could really find, but I will admit I didn't try too hard
A few more pictures from today before I leave for the evening. Not gonna worry about ID's right now, since most are pretty common fungi.

This one is kinda interesting. I found it in the same yard where I was finding Panaeolus olivaceus last year. Not sure if that's what it is, so some microscopy will be done later on (after prints are finished being taken). Color is off a bit on the indoor pics, so the gills look kinda brown, but in person they are extremely black and mottled.

A few pictures from the past couple of days.
The minions. Came up with the names "Rosco" and "Cranston". Rosco is the bad ass of the two, and Cranston was the first one to eat cranberries :
Hygrocybe:
Pluteus Cervinus:
Some other sort of weird Pluteus:
Ovoids:
Agrocybe:
Amanita pantherina:
Coprinellus micaceus:
? maybe a Gymnopus, but that doesn't feel right:
Bluing Mycena. Not sure if they are Mycena amicta or not. The color keeps throwing me off:
Marasmius oreades:
Somebody's old weed stash in the woods:
Can't remember how to spell the name

More bluing Mycena adventures! I've been finding subtle differences besides bluing to distinguish between the two species that look so much alike. I'll try to explain what I have come up with so far Bruising is immediate, and very noticeable. Gotta get down low to spot them too, as this species is one of the most difficult ones to find and actually collect numerous specimens in my experiences. Ain't like hunting for cyans.
Ok, this one is bad. Well, not bad, just not blue bruising, and most likely a different species. Note how the gills attach to the stipe:
This one is good, and besides bruising blue, has a different gill attachment. The caps look very similar, and I'm even confused every so often, until I see the blue on the stems:
Differences/similarities. The caps look almost identical. Stems on the blue bruising species are pruinose, while the latter one isn't. Gill attachment is similar, but not the same. They both grow from Douglas Fir cones, so that is why you come across the two species while hunting for the blue bruising ones. The blue bruising one is on the top:
Blue bruising on right:
Stem with bruising:
Bad one. Notice the gills again, and how they attach:
Blue bruising species. Notice the collar around the stem and how they are not attached:

This is how similar they can look:

Since I am not sure when the next time I will have this many fresh specimens that blue so much, I might just bio assay some later on today, after prints of course

Thanks man, that means a lot coming from you It took 4 hours of digging in blackberries and snow berries to find that many I will try to do microscopy on both species to help show microscopic differences. It's super hard to even find them in numbers, let alone photograph with a point and shoot Cannon.
They enjoy wood sauce agar, and are happily eating away Sorry, no pics of that right now. I don't like showing pics of really anything related to wood sauce, at least not for the moment. Don't wanna give people the wrong idea and have a bunch of people trying to make some, then wondering why it's not working. It's a very fine art to get it right. Eventually I will publish a simple, proven, and effective recipe, but for the time being that stays in the black book.

Got to explore a new forest today. Lots of stuff I don't see every day, and a few cool looking species. Laid down about a gallon of both P. stuntzii and P. cyanofibrillosa LC while out walking too, so it was all for a good cause.
Laccaria sp:
Polyporus arcularius:
Entoloma sp:
Amanita pantherina:
Inocybes:
Laccaria, or something
Pholiota sp, similar to Pholiota spumosa:

Making up the cyanofibrillosa LC I sprayed today. Goes against everything people will tell you, but hot damn is it good stuff. I started to not listen about a year ago, and since then I've never had so much good luck spraying LC outside. Also, don't be afraid to move outside the box. WAy too many people on this forum are stuck with what has been proven, and never get enough balls to try something new. Being stuck inside the box is as bad as not having any experience. Playing with cultures in your closet is fun, but it is child's play compared to using pesticide sprayers driving 40 down the road
Water balloons will be next, along with spraying LC from hot air balloons and shooting dried azures into the air with rockets to blow up and spread spores into the wind currents. Next time you see a hot air balloon around the Seattle area, know that there is a good chance it's me, and I'll be spraying the shit out of the area. Having a "Super Soaker" fight with them full of LC is hilarious. People have no idea what you are shooting all over their yard
