To all who are confused by this,
This young lad wasn't shot just for taking drugs, he was shot because he must have stepped out of line. This republican group aren't against drugs, they control the drug trade in parts of the north and use the money to fund their terrorist campaign. They use the front of an anti drugs vigilante group to keep low level dealers in line and ensure they have no competition
If that woman hadn't brought her son to be shot in the legs the family home would have been attacked, car bomb or maybe burned out.
It may sound shocking or weird but you have to remember Northern Ireland is a shithole

Thanks for clearing that up. It sounds like these guys normally even give warnings to the dealers before taking action sounds interesting. Pretty fucked up but I guess it's not any different from any other dealers fighting over drug trade. Smart idea of them I guess to pose as an anti-drug group to get some support from the citizens.

Thanks for explaining, this story makes a lot more sense now.
When I first read it I thought the mom was some kind of crazy bitch. But now I see that she saved her families life. Her statements to the newspaper seemed like antidrug propaganda when I first read them; Now it seems that she was giving respect to the gang by rallying against their mail-order competition. Smart lady.
I guess he was probably selling drugs but not giving a cut of the profits to the right person. Perhaps redistributing bath salts he ordered online.

There are some very confused Americans in this thread....Republican has NOTHING to do with Democrat/Republican bullshit like your retarded govt, this is relating to those who are separatists/loyalists, it's about Ireland being divided by the British, not some yahoo rodeo like US politics.

If she didn't do this then they all would have burned. What is she to do? Not everywhere in the world is as secure as America.

Could she not have called the fucking cops? I swear, if a gang threatened me and my family, I'd contact the authjorities and I'd LEAVE MY HOME for a while till shit blew over.

Her son was only shot in each leg, calling the cops would have likely made the situation much worse. These dissident republicans are a serious threat not just to individuals but to national stability in Northern Ireland as a whole. These groups have had access to weapons like machine guns, tons literally of semtex and surface to air missiles. They are not some smalltime gangsters, they are a dangerous paramilitary organisation

I suppose you could say that, the island is divided north and south. Northern Ireland is part of the UK but many who live there (republicans) want it to be unified with the Republic of Ireland in the south while many others (loyalists) want to remain part of the UK hence conflict

"Hey mum, instead of having me shot in both legs, can we leave this bat-shit insane town for a while.? Or maybe...forever?"
Mom: "No it's not that simple. We owe these violent men money and your sister has to go to school. It's just a life-threatening injury."
They really seem to understate the gravity of being shot. What the fuck was going through their minds?

Yeah that's what I was thinking. I'm hardly qualified to speak about this issue, any thoughts of mine are bound to be seen as ignorant by someone who's more familiar with the socio-political climate of northern Ireland but it seems to me like moving would be a great idea. Where I'm from families tend not to sell each-other out, even under the threat of violence. Like I said though, spiderbaby is probably the only person remotely qualified to comment on this issue atm.
