I have asked a Mod if this post was against the rules. He cannot see why it would be, so here it is.
Basically i am asking for Australians to post shots of habitats where they find Psilocybe subaeruginosa.
Try to get a good idea of areas u should be looking for eg grasses, certain type eucalypt, water content, leaf litter density, soil types and the extent of the aussie Psilocybe subaeruginosa's range.
Not asking for locations maybe state if you would, just photos of the area and a brief description of the area like soil type, leaf cover (pine/euca), if close to creek, native forrest or plantation,woodchipbed(type of wood?), deep/outskirts or recent rain.
Hoping this can help others be more successful in their ventures as well. Have searched extensively and there doesn't seem to be anywhere near the amount of info n other country's hunting areas.

nice idea  im sure this will help others in the search for Psilocybes.
this is at high altitude in the Adelaide Hills on a grassy hill side with lots of leaf litter and debris under Eucalyptus amongst bracken ferns. i have some others lying around that ill throw up later

Gumtrees, lots of twigs and bark and short grass. Don't go deep into the forest.

spacey areas of pine forest with grass and pine needles
 
woodchiped areas/garden beds
  
along the sides of walking trails and creeks
 
grassy areas around eucalyptus trees with brackens
will get some new ones of different areas and substrates when i go out next

Below are various habitats where I found subs in Hobart, Tasmania.
This was my first ever find - growing in my own garden.
http:// 
Growing from rich woody soil beneath a garden plant. Very moist soil, not much direct sun light.
 
These are from two different locations. Both growing from woody soil. Lots of grass around. Lots of gum leaves around also.
  
These ones come from my best patch. They grow amongst the grass in a playground. There is pine bark scattered throughout the grass. Also there is a garden bed with a lot of dead pine needles and grass which I also have a lot of luck with.
This is the place where I always start my seasons. Ferns and gum trees everywhere. Lots of grass also. This is a southerly facing hill with very moist conditions.
 
The majority of my finds are within 500 meters or less from sea water and are all within 10 minutes of my home.
Basically any location that has garden beds with pine bark, or lots of ferns is a good place to look. Start of at your local park and go from there.
Also, looking for indicator mushrooms is a good idea.
If I see Leratiomyces ceres I know I'm looking in the right locations.
(this is not an active mushroom)
This mushrooms grows in the same condition as subs and usually starts fruiting a few weeks earlier. If you come across one of these chances are that there are subs close by.

nice shots, i get subs growing a few houses down on my street but not in my front garden thats awesome. i find stacks of Leratiomyces ceres at Sub patches, they always get me excited from a far

 If you copy/paste someones online status and it is set to "invisible" it copies that too, I have accidently done this before myself.
I seem to be unable to find any habitat shots on my PC to contribute. I often do dumps of old photos onto dvd, I'll have a look through those to see if there is anything there. If not I'll snap some next hunt out for ya.

I know there are more aussie hunters with pics to share. I have gone threw a few successful hunters galleries but i know there are more that other hunters dont publicly share.

Na, it's just subs don't really grow in dark gloomy forests
They like a bit of sunshine from my experience but also some shade under gum trees mostly and certain grasses. You won't find them deep under ferns.

In my personal experience I have always had more luck finding them in woodchip garden beds rather than in the forest.
Don't get me wrong, I have found them in forests but they seem to be more sparse,
(one or two here and there) rather than the clumps that they seem to grow in woodchip.
And when you find a patch in woodchip there is usually more to be found close by, so keep looking!
I used to drive 40 or so minutes up to a mountain range to go hunting, and half the time returned with only a handful and more often than not, nothing. So I started looking closer at my local park where I Walk my dog.
I started searching the woodchip beds that the councils lay. And walla, what do you know, hundreds! And they had been under my nose the whole time. and this is all of 5 minutes from my house.
So I guess sometimes its better not to go too deep. Sometimes they're right under your nose, and once you find one, it's all on!

No local woodchip beds around here. If there is, its the bleached than dyed/stained woodchips and i hear they are no good.
I have a state forest/preserve that starts at the end of a few roads around town.

i would have thought the same thing about the colored wood chips but the ones i have found this season are growing on bark that has been colored black, i will try and get some pics this week when i go back to get one the small ones i left to get nice and big

We have very different looking habitat around this part of NSW. I live inland from sydney, and a little further up. We only have the occational huge pine tree, but we have plenty of old eucalypt around. And alllooootttt of cypress pine:
^^^ This looks exactly like the place im hunting. Havent found any subs in this habitat yet, not sure if i will. Anyone hunt habbitat like that?

I agree Locky - looks way to dry, stick to creek beds and anywhere water tends to pool - hunting while it is actually raining will give you a good indication of where water is flowing.

Is it true that the quickest way in the field to determina a galerina and a sub is that a gal will have a ring ont the stipe compared to the sub whos stipe ios bare?
My very first Subb find, few year ago before i knew to cut off at butt, yes i know i massacred them by pulling the out but the did re fruit 4 times than the floods washed my spot away as it was on the river bank.

Yes, galerinas usually have an annulus around the stem where the caps has separated from the stem to release spores.
I have found that galerinas almost always grow directly from wood and have a slightly different coloured stem compared to subs. But looking at them from the top they look almost completely identical to a subs.

They do like to grow from moss, but there is usually a log or some sort of wood under the moss. Just be extra cautious and spore print anything suspicious. Generally, if it's growing directly from wood I wouldn't even bother touching it. I don't think I've ever found a sub growing from moss, but that's not to say it doesn't happen.
I have come across them a few times in one of my patches. Fortunately they were not growing amongst the subs, but they were still close by.

The rings are not always present so although, it is a good way to differentiate it should never be the only way used.

Is there anything else i have missed about them beside rusty/brown SP, darker stem, darkening Myc at foot (can be confused with blueing) and a annulus on the stipe.

this is two areas i have found them, the grassy one is about 10m away from a bank of pine treas, picked 20-30 then someone mowed the area  and the others were growing in that black bark surrounding a pond, their was about 15-20 of them growing under the plant in the photo

Some pics of my main patches and their habitats:
1st photo is under pines (obviously) no where near a creek or water, usually pretty dry there, surprised they even manage to grow there! 2nd photo is right next to a creek under eucalypts.. usually your best bet, search that kind of habitat, anywhere right next to a creek..

Looks really wet in your first pic.Cheers mate, the place i found my 1st an only subs was along murrumbidgee river.
Had some serious flooding a few mnths ago so its fairly wet everywhere with little billabongs/lagoons everywhere. Still considrable amount of leaf litter though.
I have some creeks to check but a few are out of walking distance. Really need to step up in my game and get my bike back on the road.

Feel free mods to remove this if it isn't clear enough, but since its for habitat and not fungi IDing this should suffice
Dense pine forest, as you can see there are lots of pine needles everywhere, this was 'deep' into the forst. On a slope facing east.
Oh, and this was from southern SA

Hey Noxadvanced, The habitat shots can be included here as well as in the south australia 2012 thread I posted them as they are this seasons sub finds. To describe the location where they are growing is basically long grasses in a gully surrounded by pines and bracken ferns. The pines are still quite dry at the moment

Cheers mate, Thanks for the decription aswell. Looking at the photos the Moisture content looks very similar to where i am hunting atm. Finding a whole bunch of Leratiomyces ceres atm amongst grass and Woodchips.

Cant answer the rain question. Found on a walking fishing trip along bidgee river. Found around late june-july.

Im thinking the season here is still about a month away as well, still trying to get out and snap some inactives and find probable spots and some earlier growers.

The first few shots are of the surrounding vegetation where I found my first subs of the season. Lots of ferns, grasses and moss with scattered pine and eucalyptus trees. Black berries a plenty though they are nothing more than a pest for a mushroom hunter. This area holds moisture very well and was damp even in the heat of summer.
and some habitat shots from the area I found today's subs. While conditions are still relatively dry I tend to scan the forest for green patches as pictured below.

How deep in the forest did you go to find those? I really want to do some deep forest subs hunting. Ive picked over 500 just around my local parks but its not much of an adventure.

cheers NOX yeah there are 5 there. I wish I still had my dirt bike. I couldn't think of a better way to explore the back roads looking for suitable hunting spots. Hope you get it going soon! Have you checked back on some of your pre-season spots? They look promising
tizjack, This spot was about a 10 minute hike into the forest in the northern hills. Not too far in but I do love hiking deep into the forests for adventure. First few times I walked into a big forest I shit myself because I got lost but I soon learned If I walked long enough I'd come out somewhere..eventually.lol

Compass is a good thing to take along. i got 2 apps on my phone for saving locations and compass.
Its has only raind like 2ml here and temps are still reaching 20-22 some days :/ bloody cold nights though.
Next week its supposed to be high chance of rain for 2.5-3 weeks and low temps but i will be back at work by then 
Checked my original spot but the floods have covvered it with sand and rocks but the ledge above looks promising.

Pine and mixed wood debris/leaf litter. There is a river running directly behind it.
Sub country.  I find they are quite spread out in areas like this rather than a patch, it's somewhat like an easter egg hunt.

thanks its a beautiful spot has lots of wild mint very fragrant too bad the area gets trashed by thugs just the other day i hauled 20 bottles and cans out of there, but on the plus i love it cause i collect them and cash them in so win in my part in a weird way

Has anyone found anything growing in any of the various types of bracken we have here? The ones in the picture i would hazard a guess at being Pteridium esculentum(The tougher darker one with no hairs on the fronts) and Calochlaena dubia(The lighter softer looking one next to the creek).
From what ive seen P. subaeruginosa seem to prefer the grassier type areas to the aforementioned bracken, although this might vary with local genotypes, just curious about substrate preferences i suppose.

Wow. These need to be printed. Very different looking subs.
Since they are looking very consistently different you should take prints and try to start a big patch. Maybe even claim them as your own strain!

thanks locky, wait until i go back and bring some samples and show some more photos of the tiny wavy caps and thick lumpy stipe. this is the only place they grow in SA and they grow amongst normal everyday Subs which leaves me to think that substrate has not played apart in the variation. i will be sending some samples to Olive from WA and if anyone would like one please PM me

More pics from my favorite, most productive area. I have found many in smaller, similar spots around the Adelaide Hills but photos would give away too much detail about where they are. Basically, grassy areas populated with large eucalypts.
I know it's a crap camera(phone), but if you can make them out the little yellow spots are subs. They are all within a large limb's distance of the tree.

Hey guys.
I have recently had luck finding psilocybe subaeruginosa mushrooms in pine breaks. The below photos are from a pine break near a block of pinus radiata trees (the tall ones).
It is known that subs sometimes grow in radiata forests and they certainly like growing in the wood chips that are made out of the wood. As you can see below, I discovered some growing in and near the wood chips that are left behind from the pile of logs that are waiting to be loaded onto a truck after harvest.
Although I was lucky finding these in the pine break, I had no such luck finding any in the forest itself (not enough light I suppose?). Enjoy!

Same area as last pics, different angle.
Dunno if it counts as habitat but so far I have found a good patch a little while after I find a kangaroo skull, every time so far!
Chilldude awesome pics, most of my finds are in the "breaks", I've found very few in actual forest/bush. But I also haven't had any luck around pine. Maybe they're just a lot easier to spot in grass as opposed to leaf/bark litter.

Very nice shots. Were the subs pics taken recently? Really healthy looking specimens
A couple shots from this weekends hunt in a very productive pine forest. Lots of green grasses growing amongst the pines means there is enough light for subs. I find they do not grow well in heavily shaded pine forests

South Oz again, my first forage in pines during daytime.
From the outside it looks thick but the pines were only 100m or so thick, past that it was cleared, more trees. Within the cleared area was a good scattering of psilocybe subaeruginosa, mostly singles but a few small clusters.
Further in.

I know this probably wont help any of you, but maybe it will. These are Auckland, New Zealand habitat shots.
First is Psilocybe aucklandii habitat shot, its strange how many subs you guys find in forests opposed to landscaping chip, subs in the forest in nz are very rare but possible in small numbers.

It is strange, seems like the rest of the country gets more in their woodchips, I have seen one patch in a public woodchipped area but that was it. I like it that way personally, I'd rather be searching for mushrooms out in the open air of the countryside, than wandering through the concreted manufactured habitat we have built (though that too has its pleasures). There's probably an environmental reason for way things are in SA. Now excuse me while i go and wipe the drool of jealousy from my keyboard  , damn your sexy photos!

Also often solitaire or in patches along roads and walking trails like this
types of landscape habitat you should be looking for
GOOD IDENTIFICATION TECHNIQUES
.Smell (does it smell mushroomey, does it smell like chemicals?)
.Spore print (Psilocybe prints should be a dark purple black)
.Bruising (Psilocybes will all bruise blue)
.Substrate (what it was growing from)
.stipe (is it woody, soft, brittle, small, big etc)
.Pileus
.Gill color
any you are unsure about either throw them out or post them up on shroomery and let someone identify them for you.
never eat an unidentified mushroom
WHY SHOULD PSILOCYBES BRUISE BLUE?
Psilocybe mushrooms contain both Psilocybin and Psilocin a natural occurring psychedelic. the blue bruising is a reaction of the alkaloids called oxidization where the O-phosphoryl-4-hydroxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine will turn blue when damaged. if your mushroom does not show any signs of bruising then DO NOT EAT IT. some Subs when found in the wild will not show any signs of bruising and it may not until hours later when you get home.
shown here for comparison this mushroom bares no bruising
and this one with bruising
slightly evident at the bottom of the stipe where it has been cut and some around the edge of the pileus you may also notice there is some purple black veil remnants atop the stipe and beneath the pileus, it is the black color due to the spores that have dropped on to it.
if you have handled your fungi in a rough manner and it bruises black that is a sign you have potentially oxidized all the Psilocybin and left the fungi virtually useless
HERE IS AN EXAMPLE OF ONE SUCH OCCURRENCE OF EXTREME OXIDIZATION
EXAMPLES OF MOSS INHIBITING PSILOCYBE SUBAERUGINOSA
  
Great care should be taken when harvesting Subaeruginosa from moss as Galerina sp also grow directly from moss
COMPARISON OF GALERINA VS SUBAERUGINOSA
notice the brown stem and annulus on the Galerina to the left (NOTE not all Galerina have the annulus around the stipe)
notice the caps are very similar
This small patch was found just inches from a patch of Subs
COMPARISON OF IMPOSTERS/LOOKALIKES VS SUBAERUGINOSA
 
The one to the right in both photos is the Sub
HYGROPHANUS PILEUS
Psilocybes among other hallucinogenic species and fungi have Hygrophanus caps which refers to color change as they dry out or absorb moisture, here are some examples of this
     
SPORE PRINTS
your Psilocybe subaeruginosa prints should look like these
   
if any of your prints come out rusty brown ditch the fungi
REMEMBER TO ALWAYS PINCH THEN AT THE BASE OR USE SCISSORS AND LEAVE THE PINS TO DEVELOP AND DROP SPORES

This thread is probably the single best resource for Australian hunters I have ever seen in regards to the habitats of Subaeruginosa!
Ive been hunting them for years now and this thread still gets me excited when I see the pictures and think of new places to hunt. Awesome!!!!

Thank you, after doing some more because i wasnt happy with the mallow ID as it was more individual plants than a bush like the traditional mallow 'shrub' an was more of a ground coverage/smother.

I'm thinking that it may be a Dichondra species as the growth habit of the native violet is different.
