Submersible water heaters and hydroton questions!

Novice here!
I want to try the hydroponics method using a submersible water heater and hydroton with an air pump.
Filling 5.5 gallon glass tank with 3- 3.5 inches hydroton then nearly topped off with water...
My concerns- Is it safe for submersible water heaters to be amongst the hydroton? I've been told atleast by pet store clerks that its a bad idea for submersible water heaters to come in contact with anything but water only.
If not safe is there a water to seperate the two
I guess I'm worred if there is a hazard issue here.
Any suggestions on good safe small submersible heaters would be helpful aswell.

The reason why I ask is because I'm trying to build a replica of this-
Mod edit: Link to well-known ripoff/scam site removed.
And was worried about hyrdoton being in contact with heater.
Is this a good setup?

The reason its not a good idea for the heater to be in contact with the hydroton is because the water cools the heater. If your heater gets too hot it can cause a short and you could have an electrical fire on your hands. you could place a heating mat under your setup if temperature is an issue.

look up "poorman's pod in the search bar under user name magash. it is the same thing and will tell you how to build it. like i said it doesnt need a submersible heater at all, room temp is just fine. I have 2 of these pmp's one with hydroton and one with perlite they both work well. check out this penis pin

You don't want to attempt to duplicate anything from a site which has ripped off more people than any other. Besides, it's a bullshit terrarium built by a noob to sell to other noobs to separate them from their money.
You don't heat terrariums. If necessary you're supposed to heat your house in the winter to normal room temperature. The terrarium should be sitting in room temperature air to work properly. Also, aquarium pumps don't supply enough fresh air, and hydroton is great for hydroponic plant growing, but lame as hell for releasing humidity into the air. Use perlite. RR
