Can't we just have an "I get easily offended." user group of some sort? They could sign up and every post that contains a word from your list of offensive words could automatically be hidden.
Then the people who want to have a little more freedom to express themselves can do so, and the people who are easily offended don't have to see it.

How about this... Just don't go to OTD. Most
of what I've seen in OTD seems really immature
and stupid. So I stay away. Getting rid of it
wouldn't make a difference to me.

If he clicked the thread from OTD, it is completely reasonable for him to think that the thread was an OTD thread and therefore under OTD rules...
Yes you have a point here I guess. A warning would have been in order first.  I got 30 days without a warning from the admin because I questioned the integrity of the moderation here in the Swami wars. I committed no infraction of the rules of any forum. They just didn't want that sort of challenge. Like I said this is nothing near a democracy but I've seen it much worse in other forum sites.

I actually think this thread is turning out pretty well and a lot of people are making compelling and insightful arguments.
I do feel like Wiccan_Seeker is bearing the brunt of complaints from people who are against making changes, but that's not fair and I hope everyone will give him a break. This is not his crusade and he is not forcing through any sort of agenda. This is a sensitive and divisive issue even among the staff, but he's tackling it head on and dealing with it professionally. That's what admins are here for. One of the reasons I like Wiccan_Seeker is that we're often diametrically opposed in our outlook, but he's always willing to debate his opinion intelligently, logically, and passionately. I'd hope most people agree that regardless of your views, there's always room for a devil's advocate who's articulate and respectful.
To address a couple issues I've seen coming up in this thread:
Only 1/4 of all people think there's a problem!
True but that's a little misleading. Any poll we take about the site is going to be heavily skewed towards the status quo. The people who are most likely to vote are those that already enjoy the site enough to register an account and check the forums periodically. We didn't get any votes from members who abandoned the Shroomery because they were uncomfortable here, or from people who never signed up in the first place. Even disregarding that fact, the admins are tasked with doing what's best for the site and helping to guard against the tyranny of the majority. This poll was intended to help gauge member sentiments and inspire discussion, but it's not a winner-takes-all vote.
But what about freedom of speech!
The Shroomery is not a government, we don't have guns or police, and we can't take away your freedom of speech even if we want to. This is a discussion about what type of behavior should be allowed in a private establishment.
It's a slippery slope! We'll have to ban everything!
It really doesn't have to be. For instance, we could just remove the 10 most offensive smileys as voted on by our community. As someone pointed out earlier in this thread, the best can be the enemy of the good.
I would also like to say that I personally don't have a problem with our current policies on racism. I agree a lot with what Morgan Freeman says in this interview. But, I feel like over the years many of the site's policies have come to reflect my own personal views, and not always with positive results. I'm trying to stay open-minded about better ways of doing things, and I hope other people will too.

You don't get one thing. The moderation here is a reflection of the position of the owners to some degree. This is not the court of democracy. Every time I challenge something I disagree with here I take a risk of being gotten rid of. I accept responsibility for that risk knowing full well I'm not in charge here and have no rights here. This is not a democracy. Push buttons at your own risk and if you find another site that you like let me know as I might be right behind you.

Oh...I totally get that...The owner of this site can choose to censor whatever he wants at any time...I have no problem whatsoever with that...
I also have no problem whatsoever with Wiccan, or whomever the owner delegates with power using that power...
I have a problem with creating a thread that can appear to be in a forum with one set of rules and then banning someone for violating another set of rules...particularly without notifying people of the applicable rules.
I don't expect this site...or anything in life to be fair...But that doesn't mean that I have to respect Wiccan for abusing his power for the purpose of expressing his personal dislike for a user or a distate for his opinion.
