CHICAGO (STMW) – Nine purported gang members were arrested after police busted an open air drug market on a West Side street corner on Friday.

Police say the bust is part of an ongoing strategy to get rid of street gang narcotics and gang activity “block by block.”

A spike in shootings and violence near Ohio and Hamlin streets led Narcotics Divisions Officers to begin their investigation of the corner two months ago.

Tied to the Conservative Vice Lord gang, police seized $6,700 in illegal funds and heroin with an estimate street value of $3,000.

Speaking at the Humboldt Park corner on Saturday afternoon, First Deputy Superintendent Alfonza Wysinger called the bust a take back for the community.

“If we have clergy standing out here, if we have community member standing out here, the narcotics sellers and gang members are not going to come back and try to reclaim this corner,” Wysinger said.

Wysinger said the area would get immediate increased police patrols but added that “watchful eyes” of community members would help continue to clear the corner from gang activity.

“We’re going to do every thing that we can possibly do to ensure gang members and drug dealers don’t come back and take this community back,” he said. “We’re going to do this block by block, step by step and for the entire city.”

The following were arrested: Jontae Adams, 20; Derick Coopwood, 19; Troy Harris, 17; Michael Raggs, 19; Jermaine Rose, 20; Charles Scott, 44; Quentin Scott, 23, and a 15-year-old boy.

All nine have been charged with drug related offenses. Three others with outstanding warrants are being sought and were not in custody Saturday afternoon.

“If we have clergy standing out here, if we have community member standing out here, the narcotics sellers and gang members are not going to come back and try to reclaim this corner"

Get the fuck outta here, I used to buy dope down there and those 9 will be replaced by 10 more people. They don't give a fuck.

I was arrested two summers ago on the corner of Division and Laramie (not to far from there) with 3 jabs hidden in the little pocket type thing on my boxer briefs. We were stopped at a gas station after just getting a call back to buy a little more before heading back to WI. The guy jumped in our car and one of my guys goes into the gas station to break a $50 and a cop car pulled up about 20 yds behind us.

They didn't hit their lights or anything, so me being nervous and on parole from WI was going to jump out and walk into the gas station and as I was reaching for the handle the cops rushed the car and ripped the doors open. Cops couldn't been older than 25 each. He starts yelling "open your mouth" so I did, then he says "what the fuck you doing here? You know motherfuckers like you get robbed and killed everyday around here?"

He pulls us all out, turns out it was the 11th time they had arrested the dope dealer on that exact corner (he was only 21). They cuffed us all and searched the car (nothing in it, we had all our shit hidden on ourselves) They pull out an empty dime bag and that gave them probable cause to take the car for suspicion of drug activity.

That baggie was not in the car, they took us to a local precinct and let us go (except the dealer his ass went to cook county jail), but first impounding the car. Luckily we had a little over $700 between the 3 of us so we got a room at the shamrock hotel on Cicero and Roosevelt and they never found our dope

They never asked for our names and they never signed or fully filled out the impound papers. The cops are are far more crooked than the drug dealers to boot.
