Quick jar question

My town is lame as hell, not a single case of 1/2 pt wide mouth's anywhere. Checked 7 stores today and all of them fail, only regular tall 'n skinny. They work, but due to their shape I notice the substrate tends to get a little compacted over time, even though I fill very loosely, thus slowing colonization.
My question is this: To compensate for this problem, can't I just fill the bottom 1/2 inch or so with verm? I won't really be able to tell when the bottom is colonized, but I'd rather try this (if it works) than order the ideal jars online because of the insane shipping.
P.S. Another question on this: If I can use this method, during inoculation is it going to fall to that bottom verm layer and piss me off, or will the substrate & glass catch most of them on the way down?

I don't think I'd put a verm layer on the bottom.
Just make the dry verm layer on top a little thicker maybe/

Yeah i thought about doing that but wouldn't that add more weight to the top and just compound my problem? Eh, i think I'll just to a mixture of the two and post the result back here. Ty beefy

You can avoid shipping charges through the websites for stores like walmart, just order, go in, pick up. I'd also be surprised if a retailer wouldn't order them for you, again getting you out of shipping costs.

Do you have an ace hardware anywhere near you. You can have jars shipped to that store for free.

I've thought about trying that but never did. It'd be a good experiment considering how many people seem to have trouble finding the right jars.

I had a dozen wide mouth 1/2 pints shipped to an Ace 8 minutes from here. Cost me like $11.

No, the nearest ace is like 45 min away and walmart stopped carrying the short wide mouth jars, all they have are the reg jelly jars. I know I will eventually get them, i mean its not like they're a controlled item (yet), but I guess I'm just an eager beaver lol.
@Death
They still want to charge me shipping. Sears, Kmart, walmart, and big lots didn't have a ship to store for free option on these jars for whatever reason. Kinda fkn dumb if u ask me since they're already being shipped every other type of jar on earth.

I've done cakes in full pint jars only half full. The extra dry verm didn't seem to hurt.
Of course I was perfectly happy with my tall jelly jar half pints too.
How about drinking glasses with foil lids? (and dry verm barrier of course) dirt cheap and easy to find.

Great alternative. Short half pint wide mouths, Ziploc. All I use for cakes now, IME I always have great colonization times. About 14-16 days only. Find them at any major grocery store.

If the Walmart site is messing with you, the customer service desk can order the jars site to store for you, they don't like to do it, but if they give you any trouble, ask them to call a member of managment, that works every time. Until last month I worked for Walmart, getting on manager's asses gets the job done every time.

Damn, I hadn't even thought of that. I would have thought they'd melt during sterilization, good to know they don't. Thanks for the info man, I'll be trying that as well now
So far, this is what I've got planned..
jelly jar with verm layer on bottom (and top ofc) jelly jar standard pf tek ziploc 1/2 pt containers.

All plastic labeled PP5 is safe to use and sterilize. Usually found in the recycling symbol, the triangle of arrows on the bottom of plastic merchandise.

wut? I wish I'd seen this before I went into town. I'm looking at the ones I bought now, don't see anything about that. It wouldn't have mattered anyway because all I could find in 1/2 pt size were the rubbermaid twist 'n seal take alongs. Here is the link for more info

According to the site, they're
and
Think these will hold up during sterilization?
Edit: Never mind, I'm foolish. I was looking on the box they came in. I see it now on the actual container bottoms. We're good

Oh damn, so there is lol. niceness bro. I feel good about these containers, I think they'll perform wonderfully. My biggest fear about them (melting) has been elevated. I'll still be trying the other methods but considering how cheap and wonderfully shaped they are I may just stick with these if they perform as expected. Let me ask this tho...over time during several sterilizations, do they start to break down and go brittle? If so, about how many times can I expect to run them through the PF procedure?

You'll get several (possibly many) uses before they start to get brittle. I suspect it's UV light that does it, tubs get brittle too and they aren't PCed.
Some brands of those have lids made from other materials, always check. The rubbermaid ones I know work fine because I've used them for pf cakes and grains and dowels.
