GREENLAND — Cop killer Cullen Mutrie and his accused drug-dealing accomplice, Brittany Tibbetts, were making $12,500 in cash sales of addictive pain killers within a matter of days, according to police.
A New Hampshire Drug Task Force investigation into their alleged sales of oxycodone led to an April 12 police raid at Mutrie's 517 Post Road home, which ended with three people dead and four others wounded. According to the state attorney general's office, Mutrie shot and wounded four DTF officers, shot and killed Greenland Police Chief Michael Maloney, then killed Tibbetts and himself.
In an affidavit to obtain the search warrant, Khalso wrote that an informant identified as "IT" had purchased oxycodone from both Mutrie and Tibbetts. Police "surveillance teams" had been stationed near Mutrie's home, according to court records, and observed "vehicles coming and going for short periods of time." License plate checks for two of the vehicles came back to Seacoast residents with drug-related criminal histories, police said.
IT, Khalso wrote, "has provided reliable and verifiable information in the past" and told police Tibbetts and Mutrie were dealing "upward of 500 oxycodone pills every few days."
At $25 a pill, that amounts to $12,500 in cash sales "every few days."
According to the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, prescription drugs are abused by more Americans than cocaine, hallucinogens and heroin combined. The DEA also recently reported studies showing that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family members, friends and home medicine cabinets.
Newly sworn Greenland Police Chief Tara Laurent could not be reached for comment about the underlying role prescription drugs played in the tragedy in the quiet town of Greenland. But in neighboring Portsmouth, Police Capt. Corey MacDonald said prescription drug abuse remains a "huge" problem.
Speaking specifically about Portsmouth and stating he's not authorized to talk about the Greenland case, MacDonald said the typical price for illegally sold oxycodone pills is $1 per milligram, or $30 for a 30 mg pill.
While the cost may sound high to some, MacDonald said people who quickly become addicted "make it work."
Often, that means stealing to support their addiction, he said. In Portsmouth, according to MacDonald, oxycodone and roxycodone are the most commonly abused prescription drugs.
"Where they come from is a big piece," he said. The most common source, according to MacDonald, is family medicine cabinets.
"People are getting more than they should," MacDonald said. "It's easily taken from parents and grandparents, and we see more pill deals than cocaine and heroin."
Leftover pills are often abused, and abusing them doesn't carry the same stigma as heroin and other addictive drugs, he said. Oxycodone and roxycodone deliver the same effect as heroin and are sometimes crushed, then snorted or injected, MacDonald said.
"I think we're seeing it reach across all demographics," said MacDonald. "We see people get on it for legitimate reasons, then they become addicted."
According to the police captain, the highly addictive nature of oxycodone is dangerous, as is the fact it lowers users' blood pressure, pulse and temperature, while putting them into a "dangerous, sedated state."
In Portsmouth, said the detective, young adults have been known to have "pill parties," and "some kids don't even know what they're taking."
At the time of the April 12 drug bust, Mutrie was alleged to have been selling oxycodone. He was also facing felony charges alleging his possession of anabolic steroids. Greenland police said steroids were found in Mutrie's home on July 24, 2010, when officers went there to seize weapons after his then-girlfriend obtained a domestic-violence-related protection order.
Since then, Mutrie was barred from possessing weapons and/or having a license to carry a concealed weapon.
Police said Maloney and the task force officers arrived at Mutrie's home at 6:22 p.m. April 12 with a "no knock" warrant and "attempted to gain entry into the home." As they did, the officers "were fired upon" and gunfire was exchanged in the area of Mutrie's front porch, front yard and driveway, court records state.
After the gunfight, police spoke briefly with Mutrie, but for the next six or seven hours, police surrounded the house without making contact, the AG's office said. A police robot was sent into the house at 1:20 a.m. April 13 and found Tibbetts and Mutrie dead in the basement. Authorities believe Mutrie shot and killed Tibbetts before taking his own life.
A Ruger .357 revolver found at the scene was bought by Tibbetts at a Manchester gun show, said Associate Attorney General Jane Young. The source of a 9 mm pistol, also found at the scene, has not yet been identified, according to Young.
The attorney general's office said ballistics tests, interviews and the overall homicide investigation remain ongoing.

surprise "early morning" night raids are dangerous. you surprise someone in their sleep u have to be prepared for consequences. people dont generally wakeup to people breaking into their home... thats right "THEIR HOME" thinking clearly... it was stupid and they could have apprehended them at a drug buy and simply searched the house while they were in custody... 3 lives saved with that right there. but they enjoy the action... good for them. plenty that night

Wait for him to walk out of his house and arrest him?
Get him at the buy, as suggested above.
Get him at work.
Really anywhere you have line of sight on him. Its not like he was rambo in the flesh. Just a bean dealer with a gum.

personally I just hate to hear about innocent people dying, pets being shot for being "noisy." It's just not necessary and there are plenty of other tactics they could yield the same results... even though its a war that cannot be won. the legal drugs will just keep getting more and more dangerous as they close in on the illegal. kids will die. sad state of war on people we live in

Don't you love how they attribute the existence / availability of these drugs on the black market to "people taking extra pills from home cabinets"? What a load of fucking bullshit. You have legitimate chemical pharmaceutical intermediates manufactures cranking out this garbage heroin across the fucking country and world wide, at an insane pace. But no, its people taking "extra's" from grandma's cabinet. It has nothing to do with the black market distribution of insanely addictive substances even though the deaths we are covering in this story is ABOUT that illicit market.
I am sure that those in the health industry are SO DISTRAUGHT by this situation, as they consistently pump out these fucking gross drugs and continue to prescribe them like they are fucking skittles. But the fault is with the damn kids, not these fucking corporations
In short, to these idiots, the problem is that people HAPPEN TO ABUSE ADDICTIVE-AS-FUCK DRUGS (human nature anyone?), NOT that we prescribe/manufacture these drugs for people to take.

Tactics that can yield the same results, without resorting to violence I'm assuming you mean? Well even if they didn't shoot the guy, I'm sure he's looking at AT LEAST 10-20 years in prison. Repeat offender, possession/distribution and illegal firearms charges etc. I would try to shoot my way out of that situation too. All for drugs. I'll be damned if I spend 20 years of my life in a box for drugs and I'll gladly kill anyone who tries to put me there.
