I really didn't intend to provide a FULL account of addiction (that would be a several thousand page treatise), I just wanted to emphasize the importance of the role of glutamate over dopamine in the chronic nature of addiction.
In neuroscience nowadays, the commonly accepted idea (among players like Kalivas, Rebec, Berridge, Wolf, and Everrit) is that once the addiction is established, glutamate is the major player, not dopamine. I should have said earlier that dopamine has little to do with maintaining addiction, rather than addiction in general. many genuine drug addicts report receiving very little actual reward from drug use. but they still continue to persist in the behavior, not because of DA (so much), but because of glutamatergic hypersensitization of PFC-NAcc pathway. The PFC becomes generally hypoactive, severely limiting its ability to inhibit various impulses that are tied (in the case of drug addiction) to sensory cues that predict drug availability. This results in a strengthening of synaptic gain in the networks involved in the drug-memory trace, and a proportional dampening down of other associative networks. Therefore the drug addicts attentional/motivational circuits are heavily biased towards drug cues, with other information simply not being integrated into attention. Its not that dopamine isn't involved at all, but its role drastically changes as the disease progresses. This is referred to as the transition from liking to wanting. There are of course other structures involved such as the extended amygdala, but that's a whole other layer of complexity.

let me tell you from someone that's done without.
Cannabis is not addictive. All I've experienced from withdrawals is boredom and a lack of will to do anything.
Alcohol? Now that's another matter. Withdrawals from that can be fatal. Cannabis? Two weeks of being miserable and bored, then it's over.

I've heard of gabapentin (Neurontin) being utilized for addiction to certain substances. Until two months ago I had been a regular taker of Neurontin for the past year and a half, and am taking a tolerance break for now, plan to get back to taking it very soon. In my experience, it doesn't seem habit-forming at all, nor have I noticed any adverse withdrawal symptoms like "increased suicidal thoughts". It probably dose work to some extent for curbing some drug dependencies. It certainly has worked well for me as a painkiller and antidepressant.

Awesome. No need for any more discussion then.
But there are women folk to, and they are not identical to me.
I know it might sound flippant when some people have really struggled coming off of weed, but I don't see it as being different to giving up sex, chocolate, red wine or computer games. It's something that's fun, can get out of hand, can go without.

I have a very hard time quitting weed. I can't stop smoking it even though I want to. It's one true vice still, and that's after being off opiates for 9 months now.

Most people struggle coming off of tobacco, and I gotta admit, if I smell it, I get the craving myself. I smoke it to. But, if no one else smokes it, I don't.
I think my vice is computer games. I have no desire to quit them, I still enjoy them. Not as much as I used to but a day without games? Oh fuck me no way. And no one can tell me they are physically addictive. Although I think the delineation between mental and physical addiction is not useful. If you're addicted to something, you're addicted.
We all have our vices.
